Barbenheimer helped - especially out the gate, when seeing them both was a worldwide phenom - but I don’t think it would’ve gone this far if the movie wasn’t actually good. Nolan’s brand recognition, the spectacle element, the IMAX component all helped too.

Nolan's an artist who takes his craft very seriously, and at the same time he *likes* popular culture, which is obvious from the films and topics he often chooses to tackle. He doesn't see himself as being above the action or sci-fi genres, as some artists do. That's a winning combination and it makes a lot of people respect him.

Directors like Nolan and Cameron became the “movie star” of their own filmography and have successfully convinced general audiences (not cinephiles) that their movies are events best experienced in the theater. They could cast any actor and it wouldn’t matter, which is something very few other directors can consistently pull off, even ones I love like Villeneuve, Scorsese, Spielberg, Ridley Scott, David Fincher, etc…

I think a big part of Oppenheimer’s success (outside of the Nolan/Barbie factors) was that it was VERY much catering to a more adult audience, as it seems most of the modern movie landscape is catering to a younger/broader crowd. Oppenheimer was a movie about complex historical events and unafraid to depict a similarly complicated morality. Many people want that level of thought in their big movie events but unfortunately almost every other major tentpole in recent memory (except maybe Avatar) has been based on source material for LITERAL children, including Barbie. That isn’t to say that those films don’t sometimes reach for higher minded takes on the material (as Barbie did) but ultimately it does kind of lead to an infantilization of culture writ large, making something like Opp feel like a serious breath of fresh air.

Oppenheimer's success is due to several factors. 1.) Christoper Nolan is one of the few well-known modern directors who can draw people to the theater. 2.) The whole Barbenheimer meme was a one-time phenomenon that probably helped Oppenheimer more than it did Barbie. 3.) Universal, at Nolan's demand, left it in theaters rather than shifting it to streaming immediately. They should do this more often. 4.) And lastly, it's just one hell of a great movie with an exceptional cast of actors.

Disneyland Tokyo is nice. It's a lot like what I assume Disneyland in Anaheim to feel like. Fairly small, right next to a bustling city, with almost no room for expansion, and sort of... old, but in a good way, timeless, not rundown. Disneysea is, of course, its standout feature right next door.
I love Disneyland Paris. And with room to expand. Best park I've been to, though, is Europapark in Rust, Germany. It's the home park of one of the leading ride designers and manufacturers around the globe, originally created to showcase what they have to offer. AFAIK it's still controlled by the founding family. And it's right next to the French border in a region that had been contested between the two for basically 1000 years, which adds a Paneuropean friendship symbolism.
Universal Studios Japan gets hyped up like crazy, but other than one rollercoaster, it was a total bore. But that was before Super Nintendo Land.
My brother and my aunt went to all the major parks in the US in the '90s (as well as the Grand Canyon, the World Trade Center, and more). I'm still envious, particularly regarding Disney World.
Edit: Disneyland in Anaheim, not in Orlando, obviously. Too much Disney World on my mind. 😅

I agree that it is important to not allow it to become a witch-hunt but it’s important to allow victims to tell their stories and get justice. We can only hope that the courts does right.

I’m so bummed that I missed this live, had too much work.
I did Barbenheimer same day twice during the opening weekend! Loved every second of it!

Can’t blame people from seeing through the illusion (sometimes accidentally) however well disguised it may be. Sometimes we don’t intend to call out the truth. It just comes out anyway. Life finds a way.

I doubt Napoleon will make that much and I’m a little worried that it won’t be that good. Has a massive task matching Abel Gances 5 1/2 hour silent film epic Napoleon.
