Christopher Nolan did an awesome job with Oppenheimer, Andrew, you're off on that critique.
Nah, I watched yesterday and felt exactly the same. Also no one's saying Nolan did a bad job, just that it was good/solid, but not as amazing as expected.

He's bang on about his analysis of the bomb scene - contrast of celebratory yet eerie.
The movie was never meant to be about the making of the bomb - it's about what the making of the bomb does to the person who made it. No one with no ego makes it, yet no one with sound judgement does (hence the Germans going after it) - I felt that was beautifully explored in the film and you felt a sense of genuine conflict.
If you study history, you realise there are no good people - it's like Warhammer.

This movie just explored deeper philosophical questions and the acting was overall better. They’re both great movies though
The whole point of the of Barbie is the inverse of the "morale" you thought it was.
It's satire on how women get so few seats in congress, so similarly Kens are only in the beginning stages of their rights.
The problem with people seeing Oppenheimer is that they expect to be entertained, as if it was an action-packed blockbuster (that’s how I went into it). But the fact is, it’s a complex character study about a man who’s faced with a huge moral dilemma and how he deals with that. That’s what the film does best. It’s absolutely not for everyone but I think part of the negative criticism of the film is that people expect it to be something that it’s not.

As someone who like science and history and politics and cinema and music, Oppenheimer is my favorite film of all time. The first 2 hours and 15 min felt like an hour. The last 45 min felt like 1.5 hour. Already watched 2 times, both on the best seat, IMAX 70mm and digital IMAX. I will watch it again when IMAX 70mm is not fully packed. Oppenheimer felt like a piece of real memory.
Agreed his style of film making was perfect for this type of subject matter. I feel if anyone else but Nolan made this film it would of been mundane. He really knows how to make any situation impactful.

I understand the Barbieland parts of the movie were used as an engine for satire, but it's not satire to beat the drums of "The real world is a horribly oppressive patriarchy." They believe that, and they don't sugarcoat it. It's in every atom of feminist art. Barbie gets ogled, cat-called, and sexually assaulted within 5 seconds of being in LA. Mattel is run by evil patriarchs even though the real Mattel has always been largely ran by women. All men are depicted as absent-minded, stupid, manipulative, evil.

The thing with Oppenheimer - I thought it was a 8/10 watching it - but I spent the whole next day thinking about it, government, the military industrial complex, etc. (yeah it may sound corny - but the film makes you think.) Barbie was one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in the last few years. I was howling laughing multiple times throughout the theater. Ken was the best part of the movie. Oppenheimer was absolutely fantastic and I think everyone should see it atleast once but it’s something to watch multiple times and take it all in.

expecting anything batman from oppenheimer is the most ridiculous thing. i loved it. its about the then current political climate, the heavy decision making between whats right from wrong, from the personal, professional, social, and political level. it was meant to put us there in the shoes of everyone and feel it deeply, very anxiety inducing and amazingly done. expectations are the biggest enemy of pleasure. I'm always excited for a nolan movie but i can't compare movies directly because they're usually different. his movies are his children in a way and i woundnt compare my children. sure its not for every one, but the right mindset and context can put you off

I feel like to fully appreciate Oppenheimer you have to have some knowledge of the physics behind it. Seeing all of the famous physicists who’s equations you use almost every day of your life gave the movie more depth and caused me to be truly excited throughout.
I also feel like you need to know more about history. Why in the scene where they get the reports that the Germans are closer to a reactor and not a bomb was because heisenberg and others were deliberately sabotaging the project. Or why we actually dropped the bomb on Japan. Sure we could’ve won without it but the Japanese are on record that they would never have stopped and made it a war of attrition. This isn’t a patriotic film it’s a biopic depicting the events around oppi and the knowledge he held . Imo the message of the movie is to be wary of a nuclear war and to not use those weapons lightly because you can legitimately set the atmosphere on fire

I don't understand how someone can't see the beauty of Oppenheimer. This movie is a complete cinematic experience. Tension, great dillema, complex characters, amazing cinematography, visuel storytelling at it's best, the sound editing and soundtrack is INSANE.
Saying you went to that movie expecting "The Batman trilogy" experience is one dumb way to anticipate a biopic movie about an historical figure and invention.

If you really know about the story of Barbie you would know that the original creator of the doll Barbie is Ruth Marianna Handler the wife of one of the co-founders of Mattel Elliot Handler. The original doll was named Bild Lilli doll. Which was based off a old comic that portrayed a blond promiscuous woman who was not afraid to use men to her advantage. Mattel later bought the rights to the doll and
Redesigned it to be Barbie. The doll was named after Ruth's daughter Barbara and then the made the ken doll and named it after her son
Kenneth.
Now to the movie which if you've seen it you can clearly see there are hidden messages and imagery. That being said in the beginning it has little girls discovering barbie in a reference to a movie called 2001 A Space Odyssey it, it shows them happily destroy their boring and oppressive baby dolls in violence and destruction. An obvious visual metaphor of little girls destroying the embodiment of motherhood to focus their lives instead on a shallow materialistic piece of consumerist trash and if this is lost on any of you people to realize then you guys are basically their target audience for this movie. The movie is basically about Barbie living in a fantasy land called Barbie land a place portrayed as a peaceful feminist utopia where all the important jobs are done by the Barbies and the kens just exist and give no inherent value, that they contribute nothing that they have no power or say in how their society is run and they're basically looked down on as silly and irrelevant by the Barbies.
I considered that to be the message of the film, but considering the hyper-modern-feminist director and Mattel's oversight, it seems unlikely that they were intentionally criticizing Barbie's influence as a product. Though, obviously I'd love for what you're saying to be true.

Precisely. Japan was not surrendering short of a complete occupation of their land. The casualties required for that invasion would have been astronomical for both sides.
Also, for anyone wondering about the need to stand up to Japanese imperialism in the Pacific and South East Asia, Japan exterminated somewhere between 3-30 million people during their occupation. To cry about 100 000-200 000 Japanese deaths without considering the horror they inflicted on others is disingenuous

The military dictatorship of Japan had done a fantastic job of creating a cult of personality around the Japanese Emperor, even though they controlled him. You can see the utter devotion of Japanese soldiers to their country's cause demonstrated by the existence of kamikaze pilots, the culture of Sepukku and the fact that whole platoons did not surrender at the end of the war and carried on fighting in certain places.
The Americans understood Japan's desire to fight to the bitter end, a fact many are forgetting to history in their quest to be nice rather than objective. They knew nothing short of a completely successful invasion and take-over of Japan would end the war. The cost of securing this objective would have been utterly devastating in terms of casualties to both sides. It would have also been a very protracted phase of the war. The Japanese civilian populace would have fought a guerilla war on the next level (Emperor worship, remember?).
The sheer efficiency of the nuclear bombings demonstrated clearly to the Japanese the stakes of continuing the war and thank God, for the sake of the Japanese people, they made the right decision in surrendering. It was also the right decision for the Americans because of the lives saved on their side. The action also saved Japanese lives because an invasion would have been far more devastating. Which is why America would also have been justified to keep on bombing Japan.
I will also add context to the historical situation. Enola Gay dropped the first bomb on Hiroshima on the evening of the 6th of August 1945. This was announced by President Truman the next morning, the 7th of August. The Japanese had two days to surrender but did not. The bombing of Nagasaki followed on the 9th. This further demonstrates Japan's unwillingness to surrender. It was not a fog of war situation. Eyewitness accounts in Japan document that the Japanese realization of a single, city destroying bomb was, within minutes, shortly after the bombing and even before Truman's announcement the next day. This demonstrates the cost of prolonging the war far outweighed the cost of the bomb.
In my mind, it was a small price to pay based on the havoc Japan inflicted on South-East Asia and the Pacific in the form of 'the Asian Holocaust'. By which they killed an estimated 30 million people in those countries.
We need to study history to ensure we do not repeat the mistakes of the past. We have had relative peace following WWII thanks to nuclear weaponry. History teaches us the path to peace is deterrence and the path to war is diplomacy. I pray America has been using her superior military spending to develop her best weapons even further and as strongly as possible. There are too many bad actors in this world who would curtail the relative freedom that Pax Americana has bestowed on the West. I also hope more countries such as Ukraine and those held in the bondage of Eastern suspicion and superstition can experience it. This will only happen if America can demonstrate further supremacy. Especially in areas of powerful weaponry

Saw Oppenheimer opening day on 70mm and thought it was just alright. They speed run through so many things certain events are awkward (like a scene with his newborn) and most people aren’t fleshed out. You need to provide the context to give the movie meaning

Jidion couldn't even properly say what happened at the end of the movie and completely missed the mark with his take. Also, seems like he didn't get the message of the movie. While it was heavily politicized, the point of the movie wasn't "screw all men". It's funny that Barbieland was trying to be a mirror of the real world (but with women in power), and some men got super offended by it. Very ironic.

They could have done more with it I agree but it didn’t take away that much from the movie. Still thought the movie was incredible

I think the fundamental point that Schulz is missing, and it’s not to his fault, that you need to be educated to appreciate this film. Not everyone has the aptitude for science and grounded films. At the end of the day, Schulz is a comic from the superhero fandom generation, and that’s how his expectations from every film is.
This is entertainment and Andrew is college educated
I enjoyed watching Oppenheimer, but I think for those who didn't enjoy the film as much was because of how the movie was promoted. In short, if you are into history you will love this film, if you are expecting shit to blow up every 15 minutes because it's a Nolan film, then you will be disappointed.
**Small Spoilers ahead**
It was promoted as if the movie was going to be about the Atomic bomb and the world causes and consequences of creating it (I also thought it would be about this). Half of the movie is about how Oppenheimer ended up leading a group of scientists to create the bomb but in actuality the movie is about Oppenheimer trying to keep his government security clearance. As one of my friend's put it "there was too much diologue". The film does take some time to show Oppenheimer's regrets once it's created. It also shows his regrets before it was created but he only agreed to do it because the Nazi's were already working on it and it was seen as "It's best if we have it before them".
My take away of Oppenheimer wasnt that he was a “piece of shit person” and i didnt think everyone in the movie were bad ppl. Had a way different perspective than andrew

Damn I really understood Oppenheimer different from Schulz. I didn’t think Oppenheimer was portrayed as a piece of shit more just as a flawed person who tried to do what he thought was best for the world, especially since it was wartime. Technically speaking, Oppenheimer was brilliant, but it fell short in the storytelling and the emotional aspects of a true masterpiece. I think Nolan could've focused less on the pace and theatrics of it and explored more of Oppenheimer's inner conflict of developing the bomb and the emotional struggle from the accusations of him being a communist. He was clearly the protagonist and rightfully so, but Nolan overall fell short of having the audience fully root for Oppenheimer and pity him for wrongfully being a target of the US, despite being a loyal patriot.
Only 3 things I didn't like about Oppenheimer: The nuke scene was silent at explosion, like an anti-climax. Also didn't show the 2 bombs on Japan. And last hour of movie was commie bullshit.
