I think Grace missed the point of two scenes in particular that actually showed the effects of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. When Oppenheimer delivered the post war speech and the projector scene where he physically couldn’t look at the effects of his creation. This is brilliant direction because it shows the consequences from Oppenheimer’s perspective. Much more creative than flashing us scenes of the actual devastation.

I mean, what is Oppenheimer known for? He is known for the atomic bomb and that he was being accused for being a communist when he was not. Within those 4 years of making the atomic bomb, a lot of things happened and obviously lots of math and science went behind creating this. They had to make sure the math was right and using the correct materials to make sure the bomb doesn't explode before flying it up in the air. That is why in the trailers Matt Damon's character asked if there was a still a chance that we could destroy the world if we push that button? And they actually thought of that question because they was a scary weapon they were creating. One of major regrets of his career was the building the atomic bomb and quoted, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. If you really wanted to learn about his life, it is nothing but him going to college to become a chemist. There is not enough research as to why he wanted to become a scientist and I am sure he did not plan on creating a dangerous weapon that changed history to where we can now destroy the world now with nuclear war. It must have fucked up his mind and questioned his morals. I have not seen the movie yet, but yours and her reason for not liking the film is stupid because it had too much science talk lmaoo. It is about a scientist and his known work for atomic bomb... What else better do you think it should have talked about in the film?? I guess the most dramatic part of it if you wanted the "drama" is his affair and trials.

Nolan really uses the format and the clearness as a narrative tool, to portray the depths of the human face and the human interior. Usually IMAX is only used to better show landscapes and stuff like that. It's used in a new and fresh way here.

This might be the first time I'm absolutely opposed to Grace. I think this was one of the best movies of Nolan. Everything about it was great. The dialogues, the acting, the score, the editing!! Seeing various physicists and other historical figures in the film was so exciting and it never felt Easter egg-ish except for that one time in the end.
3 hours went by like nothing. And that last line will probably go down in history as one of the best lines in cinema history. I sat through the credits just pondering....

The history of the atomic bomb is a little more complicated than that. We learned after the war that the Germans weren't as close to developing it as we thought, mostly because they had killed their best scientists or forced them to flee to allied nations. The Soviets were only able to develop theirs so quickly thanks to spies giving them information from the Manhattan project so not having the bomb or at least delaying its development and impact significantly was a possibility.

This is like saying you don't like Lord of the Rings or Matrix as cinematic achievements.
This is a serious film, serious cinema in the genre of a biopic. Not for popcorn or drinks, nor for getting joyful entertainment - masterfully shot, masterful shot composition, outstanding OST /sound design, oscar worthy performance by the cast, top-notch directing. One of Nolan's best.
    It's a 10/10 as a movie can go.
This is to feel dread and internal turmoil, the haunting feeling that Oppenheimer felt (and presented to you by Nolan) after realizing the consequences of his + his peers scientifc breakthrough and the effect it had on the world and the fact that we are still living in an experiment that has not ended yet, we don't know the ending.
A cautionary warning in which the true creators & inventors don't have a say in how their creation is used, but by politicians that hold that power over them + the power to destroy a genius man, a scientist's life/image and/or influance in a very important field and lastly but not least - the power to destroy the world.
You seem extremely juvenile in not being able to appreciate such movies and themes + the fact that you can't separate an actor (or in Emily Blunt's case) actress from the role they play + you seem to disregard/disconnect the movie from its theme and real life importance.
    Ignorance is a bliss.

Grace, with all respect to your review, I would just like to add that to show the horrors of Hiroshima, would mean to show the people in the vicinity of the bomb, whose skin peeled off and whose insides liquified. And these reports were only made public in the U.S. around 1950 (if memory serves correct). Read John Hersey's Hiroshima for the account of what happened in 1945 (it's an easy and engaging read and fairly short). - Plus, they only had two bombs in 1945. It was the great bluff of the U.S. to say they had more. So, not having seen the movie yet, this all I have to say about the demand for 'more bomb', although I understand that effects are supposed to be shown in movies not verbalized.

I unfortunately didn’t have an IMAX anywhere near me, but the theater near me has a Dolby Theatre, and man was it awesome.
You could feel the explosion shaking you to your core while watching the movie.
And I think the poster depicts what the film is perfectly. It’s about Oppenheimer and his life, but you cannot discuss the man without the bomb and how it looks over his life kinda like it does in the poster.
I don’t think it’s absolutely amazing 10/10, but I undeniable that Nolan knows how to extract good performances from his actors and how to make dialogue scenes tense and interesting.
I did the Barbenheimer double feature last night and it was a blast. I had about 45 minutes between showtimes to relax and digest Oppenheimer before getting a more light-hearted but still mature and interesting film in Barbie.
The two films complement each other very well, and I loved both of them. One of the funnest things I’ve had the pleasure to do in a while.

Even for a 2 hour film, the first 15 minutes are not the entire experience, and Oppenheimer changes dramatically after the bomb test scene. Real, I actually listen to physics lectures on the regular and there were numerous points in the film where they might've brought up some idea (neutron reflection) and if you knew what they were referring to, great. It kinda added to the moment because you knew where they were going with it. Same thing with the scientists. Its cool if you can recognize Fermi, Heisenberg, or Feynman. Again, it kinda adds to the moment when you know them. But you don't NEED to know them or the stuff they're talking about to understand what Oppenheimer is going through. A lot of the physics stuff mentioned in it was really surface level and really just there to set up the substance of the movie, which was the drama.
Interstellar is probably more along the lines of ACTUALLY needing to understand the physics to also get the art. But that's because Interstellar is a sci-fi while Oppenheimer is a historical drama that just has science as a backdrop and the motivation (along with WW2) for the characters doing what they do.
I get the feeling Grace is just blonde and has a tiktard attention span and anytime anything outside of her purview is mentioned, she gets thrown for a loop as her brain resets, regardless of how tangential it was in passing.

    • @unoriginalguy_
      @unoriginalguy_ 9 місяців тому +3

Yeah, the nudity felt unnecessary, but after hearing Nolan's reasoning it makes sense. He didn't want the movie to be marketed as a PG-13 movie because the themes are subtle and very adult. A lot less of the audience would understand it because a lot more of the audience would be younger. So he added the nude scene to ensure it would be rated R so that it could be marketed as a more adult oriented movie. Maybe he should've just added a few more F-bombs, but I get what he was doing.
