No, the best part of Galaxy Quest is when Alan Rickman says to that dying alien, "By Grabthar's Hammer, I swear you shall be avenged!" because he knew full well how comforting it would be for him to hear those words in his final moments. It was so much more than just a heart-wrenching death scene, because that was the moment when he realized that his life's work wasn't just cheap drek that didn't matter; it was art that profoundly touched peoples' hearts, giving them inspiration, hope and solace.

They all became their actual characters... Lazarus avenging the death of his alien fan, Fred the tech guy, the woman repeating the computer, all of them.
I remember sitting in the movie theater in early 2000 and watching the first few minutes and thinking...why did I come to see this movie? Then the magic happened! This is one of those movies that comes along once every decade or so that just blows you away because it is so clever, well written and perfectly directed. I was given the version of the DVD that has a good deal of extra material about the making of Galaxy Quest - you owe it to yourself to see the directors and the actors talking about making this movie. With Alan Rickman gone we probably won't see a sequel - that is so sad. All the characters are important but the movie would not be the same without him.
The cast says it was even funnier before the studio cut it up to make it a kids movie. The way they describe the jokes they left out it sounds like a mel brooks comedy in space.

Once per decade? I remember I watched it in late 1999, back to back with Mystery Men, and although Galaxy Quest was very good, it was still the lesser of the two, so no, not at the level of once per decade, not even the best of 1999. If you want to say it was the best in 5 years in either direction, it's got half of the 90s as well as Donnie Darko in 2001 to compete with!

They kind of come back to this when they are in the mine field and Lazarus says to Laredo, "Could you possibly try not to hit every single one!" . One of the funnier moments in a film with so many, but that one always makes me laugh and smile.
Okay, I'm not breaking new ground here, but ALL the casting in this was absolutely brilliant. I'm not trying to pick favorites, just sharing what makes me smile. Sigourney Weaver, a completely accomplished actress, playing the character of a hot actress in a skintight suit, is pure gold. All of these roles were handed to actors who portrayed them lovingly.
My new thing is that people who use the term "underrated" should change that to "under-viewed." In most cases, like here, that is really what's going on (although that's changing for this movie) . The movie is deeply appreciated by those who do view it.

It’s fun to listen to the commentators talk about how surprised they were the movie took on a following all its own. Galaxy Quest for the win!
I learned to sail in small boats where you push the tiller to the right for the rudder to go left. The first time I ended up on a big boat with a wheel captain of the boat let me bring it into the dock cuz he knew I'd been sailing all my life, and the first thing I did was turn the wheel left in order to go right and everybody freaked we didn't hit anything but the captain laughed and said that's how I know you really are a sailor you're treating it like it's a tiller.

Jeez...I forgot how fucking good this movie is. I have to watch it all over again. Surrealistic, moronic, and heartwarming all in one fell swoop. When was the last time you saw a movie with all those qualities?
this movie has such a fantastic plot - its not just a parody of star trek movies - its a parody that has the fake parodied actors portraying themselves. Now of course this is somewhat obvious but I think it adds an entirely different element to the movie
Have you ever been to a SciFi "Pro-Con" ? (as opposed to a Fan convention) Pro Cons are run for profit, and feature stars of past and current TV and movies. Pro Cons are usually in a convention center. Autograph signings (usually for a price), professional vendors, very much about money. Fan conventions may have one or two stars, more often retired or semi-retired, authors, and even people from NASA, etc., tend to be in hotels. Galaxy Quest definitely has one or more people who had input on the Script had people who KNOW SciFi Conventions! Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, and others in front of and behind the camera had attended SciFi conventions before they made this movie. If you ever attend a SciFi convention, you will gain a fuller appreciation of Galaxy Quest!
Fabulous movie. Its so much harder to make an excellent comedy than it is to make an excellent drama. The gentle scraping of metal to metal contact is perfect.
Reminds me of my times docking in Elite: Dangerous. I swear, I never watched the docking tutorial, so until I figured it out, I was grinding my ship back and forth on the docking platform until the docking arm finally nabbed me. Of course one time I was backwards and didn't realize it until I was staring at the docking assist screen and saw the arrows pointing in the opposite direction. Now I can dock with minimal problems, hell I usually can fly out at full speed through the dock port of the hubs without colliding with the guide bars.
The whole film is the best kind of satire, like a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta: willing to poke endless fun at the trappings and rituals of an institution, but affectionately respectful of the values at its core.
What really grinds my gears is the fact that the wing is way further outside than the front part. Still they scratched the front part.... doesn't make any sense does it?
FourKelvin hahaha....i've never noticed that! they would've had to basically be vertical in order for it to even come close to touching. haha...makes the scene even funnier to me...

Take note Orville, this is how you do a funny parody of Star Trek.
The orville isn't a parody, it is Star Trek...
@@SuperPostman No, it isn't.
I love the expression on Laredo's face when he is not quite sure what he's doing, a sort of blank clueless expression with some fear and bewilderment whilst trying to pretend everythign is fine.
I like how for the majority of the film when he's on the bridge, he has to keep flying it too.
I still say "YOU don't know!" like how Sam Rockwell says it when they open the shuttle without checking for air.
"IS THERE AIR?!?" is my favorite line lmao
What a perfect movie. Wish they still made good ones.
This is the best star trek movie ever XD
Just imagine your first drive of a brand new spaceship. cool for actors to be suddenly thrust into real adventures. awesome
Still makes me laugh two decades later 😎
When you remember that the pilot was the uptight one, then you see the look on his face when they clear the dock.
Every moment was funny, especially "DO I!?" part, but i seriously lost my ship when the rock thingy ripped Jason's shirt! WERE THEY REFERRING TO KIRK
Jeez...I forgot how fucking good this movie is. I have to watch it all over again. Surrealistic, moronic, and heartwarming all in one fell swoop. When was the last time you saw a movie with all those qualities?
There are so many "Best parts" of this movie. How can you decide on this scene??
My favorite is the "those poor people" response to Gilligans Island.
this movie has such a fantastic plot - its not just a parody of star trek movies - its a parody that has the fake parodied actors portraying themselves. Now of course this is somewhat obvious but I think it adds an entirely different element to the movie
I must watch this movie again.
I don't know if they wanted to make a StarTrek Parody, or just wanted to make a comedy Sifi space movie. Any way they did a very good job at both.
This is a love letter to Star Trek, and especially the Star Trek fans
I agree! - That face 'Tommy' makes like, "I do this all the time."
It's the simple things in life you treasure.
I can't stop laughing 😂🤣😂
Never a dull moment. 👍👍
I love his face during this and after especially! It’s so funny!!
You broke the bloody ship!!
"You gotta move it left." "Just sit yo ass down!"
Fabulous movie. Its so much harder to make an excellent comedy than it is to make an excellent drama. The gentle scraping of metal to metal contact is perfect.
Favorite scene is, Alex where are you going? To see if there's a pub.
Tell us all that you're a gaming nerd without saying you're a gaming nerd...
@@lancer525 lol definitely
This film was so amazing
I needed a sequel
This film was so amazing there must NEVER be a sequel.
The whole film is the best kind of satire, like a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta: willing to poke endless fun at the trappings and rituals of an institution, but affectionately respectful of the values at its core.
This movie is a classic
What really grinds my gears is the fact that the wing is way further outside than the front part. Still they scratched the front part.... doesn't make any sense does it?
FourKelvin If you look closely, the ship is actually tilting to the left.
FourKelvin hahaha....i've never noticed that! they would've had to basically be vertical in order for it to even come close to touching. haha...makes the scene even funnier to me...
It makes perfect sense.
Gentleman dont worry too much about it. Its just a film after all.
Gentleman hey just noticed the fabulous wordplay with 'grind my gears'. good on you sir!
I can't stop laughing 😂🤣😂
The very best Sci-Fi movie EVER. I watch it at least twice a year. Always cheers me up.
