The reason they did not use bullets is because, the Balloon is filled with helium - if you put a hole in the ballon it'll not just pop, rather it'll just leak out slowly and take hours or even days to go down.
Previously, the Canadian Air force as well shot down a balloon, but it took more than 1000 rounds and it still didn't go down.
So it's not just to demonstrate air superiority, rather a one hit kill using the missile was the most effective, faster, better approach to take the balloon down.

@@doom5950 the balloon and its equipment cost at least a few million. Plus, the f22 has been bought and paid for, so the cost is negligible. Also, in international practice, China would know the whereabouts of its devices and would contact countries before any serious misunderstandings could damage relationships. Why didn't the Canadian government take it down. Clearly, games are being played here.

Surely it was a tough battle between the 5th gen ultrasonic stealth mighty f-22 raptor and the Chinese balloon, firstly the balloon was in the lead and almost passed the American territory without being even touched by the American army but in the end the f22 finally got a lead a locked on the Balloon, it was a really tensed moment for the American government and the army. They were veiwing the live shots of the battle. This shoot down was broadcasted all around the country. The f22 used one of the most dangerous missile in its arsenal. The balloon tried its best to catchup with mighty f22 but couldn't do so due to f22's stealth ability.
Victory for USA and the f22 raptor. Maybe a national holiday is to be declared for this event.

There's a technique which uses an aircraft (a modified C-130) to capture parachuted film capsules detached and dropped from satellites. I'm not sure whether this technique can also be used to capture the balloon. But 1 thing for sure is that a C-130 can't exceed an altitude of 40,000 feet.

Such would be more feasible, if even possible and safer, by using a fixed wing aircraft in order 'snag' the balloon. Look up: "Fulton surface-to-air recovery system" and then imagine converting it in order it be employed to capture (snag) balloons at altitude. I know! It's a crazy idea, although some believed the first hot air balloons and aircraft, even after the Wright Brothers, were suicidal endeavors. I even contemplated the same outcome prior to my first solo flight. ;)

    - the infrared sensor was replaced by an infrared colour sensing head
    - it is not easy to shot a moving object down in a height of 18 km above ground level
    - the usage of a machine gun would have allowed to ballon to still continue driving, and possibly past the US territory
    - they used the sidewinder, because this would make an aimed shot possible, which ensures as straight as possible vertical drop of the balloon's payload
    - the US and Canada allowed it to pass over, because they wanted to see what it does
As we see on the image, there are large solar panels and antenna mounted at the payload. It had been stopped several times to stand still over certain target points. A weather balloon would not be able to do that. This is not a weather balloon. From knowing what the Chinese are looking at the US knows what they are busy with.

    • @joeiborowski9763
      @joeiborowski9763 Рік тому

There is no international law or treaty of where a country's airspace ends. Satellites are at a minimum 520,000 ft. "Space" starts at 325,000 ft. 10000 ft. is the unofficial acceptance of most countries as "international" airspace. The SR-71 flew at 90,000 ft. in the 70s and the Soviets tried to shoot it down many times but couldn't. The U2 spy plane flew at 70,000 ft and was shot down and pilot captured. Did the Americans complain that it was "international space"?
What have China's military have shown? That it is good in parades and shooting missiles over Taiwan? How many real wars and battles have any, just ONE Chinese military equipment been proven to be effective? How many countries want to buy cheap Chinese military equipment? Maybe a few third world countries mainly in Africa and Indochina because they are too poor to buy real modern western military equipment.
If they are of old Soviet design which most are, we can see in the war in Ukriane, it is garbage.
There is reason why the world laughs at the "made in China" tag. Good cheap labor for products of low tech or no tech.

Yes indeed, the USA wanted a bit of theatrics.
Original Canadian tracking showed that the balloon was actually traveling west over the high Arctic -- presumably part of the survey series for the Arctic sea routes China intends to cost set against the Panama one. Note that another balloon was in action over central America and probably also measuring currents and winds around the proposed expanded Panama Canal.
China has very many land and sea survey launch points including ones in Russia co operated with Russia. Inter country research (civilian) is based in many universities and similar balloons and balloon mild accidents were reported on in the Antarctic and southern oceans in 2021.
The whole context is vital here and it is most unlikely that the northern balloon was intended to be turned so far south over populated Canada or the USA, especially as it is known that it encountered the contrary weather front over the Beaufort Sea.
The Sidewinder is old technology and mainly heat-seeking. The F-22 was not a good choice for obtaining intel and footage on the payload and it appears that wreckage from it is spread over 8 sq miles in shallow water off S Carolina.
Expense aside, the USAF made a bungled mess of a "fish in a barrel" operation and had apparently not spotted the balloon the north west land mass until told by the Canadians. Shades of 9/11!
