      Getting there! I must admit, it needs to fit within my working and family life at the moment. When I started it was during the Christmas season, so I had a bit more time. Nevertheless, we soldier on

    Great information Adam! I've used tempered glass a lot in the past, I've even tried to cut it once unknowingly thinking it was float glass, it's amazing how much you can actually bow it without it breaking, but one little tap as you said to the edge and it's like a bomb, make sure you cushion those corners with a heap of silicone before you put those brackets on, but you know that for sure, the build is coming along great mate! 🙂

    That was super interesting. Wow. I must be one of the rear ones that has seen a pool panel explode that was quite a few years back. I'm sure there have improved immensely since then.

    Nice Adam. When you install the edging, do you pack it with anything or just silicone it?

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  2 місяці тому +1

      I’ll do the top welded bracing first, and use a tonne of silicone. I’m aiming for a 5mm cushion. Then I’ll match the corner angles

      @@australianaquarist also, what do you think you will use to light this tank? I'm setting up a 475 gallon above ground pond with a viewing window and am planning to make it a coral pond but it is 200x150x60cm so it will be very expensive to illuminate, so im just wondering what you used to light your old reef tank and what your planning to use this time round. Cheers

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  2 місяці тому

      @glub9075 that’s a very good question and something I’m still wrestling with. I want to mount the lights up high, so that they are well above the plants on the island, and the only lights I’m aware of that could be used this way are Kessil with narrow reflectors, or my trusty 400w metal halides. What are you thinking?

    • @glub9075

      @@australianaquarist I'm thinking of using some noopsyche k7 pro v3s or some ali express orphek bars. check out noopsyche, they are great. Are you talking about spotlight reef lights compared to like bars or pucks?

      @@australianaquarist Hi, do you reckon ill be alright to use tempered glass with my aquarium even if it isn't heat soaked. I wont be drilling it as the holes are already cut into it before tempering and im hopefully avoiding a frame so I can have a fancy looking rimless tank. Thanks

    is tempered glass cheaper or acrylic ?

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  2 місяці тому

      Acrylic in Australia is expensive, as it has never really been a commercial product. It’s really only sold as a sign writing product. That’s why I started looking around for a cheaper way of buying glass. I looked secondhand, but then realised that all the tabletops etc were tempered, which brought me to pool fencing and finally balustrade

    I've built a 300g, it's 3' tall and 4' wide. It's half inch wow she bows... bracing and all that. can't fill it all the way.

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  2 місяці тому +1

      Is it worth draining it down and reinforcing the degree of bracing you have?

    • @djt7387
      @djt7387 2 місяці тому +1

      @australianaquarist hey! Thanks for the response.
      No, im afraid it would need a brace in the center of the glass.it has euro bracing.the glass is embedded in plywood, with no deflection. It had almost 1/4" bow 3/4 full .. a bit too much for me.It looks nice as a huge paladarium. Lesson learned. Haha

    • @djt7387
      @djt7387 2 місяці тому

      @@australianaquarist the frame isn't bending at all. Just the pane.. I don't want to ruin that open space.. I'll use 3/4" next time. It's the height, so much pressure.

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  2 місяці тому

      So you have no cross braces at the top?

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  2 місяці тому

      If only euro braced, the front euro must be deflecting outwards with the glass? Obviously as the water height increases so does the pressure, so it would be very odd to have the glass bow in the centre of the pane, but not at the top. My turtle tank uses 1/2” tempered glass, but has cross braces from the front to the back of the tank.
