This was helpful. Thanks! On retinol nights I’ll wash, add my niacinamide serum, retinol and then moisturize. On non-retinol nights I’ll do my regular routine of wash, toner, niacinamede, alpha albutrin, lactic acid, Mande loc acid and then moisturize!!
Well if it works for you yes. But the order would be like this: Wash Toner (Hydrating toner, no Glycolic Acid) Lactic acid (aha) Niacinamide Alpha Arbutin Moisturizer or Wash Toner (Hydrating toner, no Glycolic Acid) Niacinamide Alpha Arbutin Mandelic Acid Moisturize
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet oh wow I never considered putting the lactic acid on first… will give it a try on my non retinol days. Really appreciate the response!!! And the routines 🤗🤗
you are my go-to for skincare tips, Melissa! tysm for educating us with these amazing videos !! by the way, I ordered my granactive retinoids 2% emulsion yesterday. I’m relatively new to using TO retinoids and retinol in general, so how often should I apply it for starters? ☺️
The Retinoid you are using is different. That's a new generation of Retinoids that are very unlikely to irritate the skin. You can read more about it here: incidecoder.com/ingredients/hydroxypinacolone-retinoate There is very little (public) research about this, I have tried it, and I haven't come across any significant issues. With this, you should be able to use it more often. But I do recommend sticking to 2-3 times for the first couple of weeks. Just in case, because you never know.
Thank you for your videos, they are great! The way you explain all the products and their use is very informative and makes skincare less daunting! And all of your tips tips are very useful. At night time for the last 4 months I have been using a glycolic acid toner after cleansing, followed by The Ordinary Niacinamide 10%, retinol 1,5% serum and light night cream with 17% hyaluronic acid. At first I carefully slowly combined them in alternate evenings, to avoid irritation, and now I used them every night, and the results are amazing. It took me approximately 2 months to fully incorporate all of the products in my skincare regimen, but overall I couldn’t be happier. I thought I would share this with you, as you might find it useful. Keep up with your excellent work!
Hello Melissa, thank you for the tips ☺️ I would like to know if I can do : 1. Cleanser (CeraVe) 2. Serum (Niacinamide) 3. Retinol (CeraVe) 4. Moisturizer (The Ordinary)
Hi I’m using this products, 1. Cerave hydrating cleanser 2. Corsx full fit propolis synergy toner 3. Corsx snail essence 4.Corsx triple hyaluronic moisture ampoule 5. Inkey list caffeine eye cream 6. Inky list peptide moisturiser This is my night skin care routine, I want to ask if I can use retinol with this skin care products? I’m thinking to use inkey list retinol serum. My skin is normal to dry skin. Thank you ☺️
Hello Jade, my advice would be to create a second evening routine not to overwhelm the skin with too many active ingredients. (too many skincare products at once) Because it may not absorb well into the skin and therefore won't show the full benefits. 1. Cerave hydrating cleanser 2. Corsx full fit propolis synergy toner 3. The Inkey List Retinol 4. Inky list peptide moisturiser
I find you video's very clear, helpful and to the point. I like how you give example of your routine, really has helped me understand it clearly. Thank you! I just started retinol and you made it easier to on what to do and what not to do. Also, many of your other videos have been very helpful in the past and recent ones like exfoliating, and more. I ordered in Differin Gel so now I am unsure if I can keep using acids a couple times a week for exfoliating (which is something I just started and was learning when to use, uggg) and what I can use with it. I saw in comments that you cannot get Differin so not reviewing, which I get. It took me while to get it here but I am older and I heard it can help a little more faster so thought I would give it a try. Thanks for the great videos!
Thanks for the feedback ❤️ Differin Gel is more potent since it is another form that is already converted so that your skin does not need to do the job. Therefore you can come across certain issues. And when starting it you need to be even more careful. I recommend starting applying it on dry skin and not using acids along with it. You can use AHA or BHA, but it may be best to stick to the gel for a while and not using the acids, or if you do, do not use them often, maybe once a week when not using the gel. The application can be a cleanser; wait 15minutes, apply the gel. Or Cleanser (other skin care products without exfoliating acids) moisturizer. Wait 30minutes and apply the gel, or just before going to bed. Adapalene seems to be the best, but some studies show that the Granactive Retinoids are even better. They seem to have very low to no irritation, and people can tolerate a much higher strength; therefore, the results will be similar to Adapalene or even better! I think you only need to use Retinol and/or Benzoyl Peroxide. And maybe Niacinamide. If I had to choose, I would go with a good Retinol and a light Benzoyl Peroxide gel/cream Retinoid 😉
Hi I have just started tretinoin. Skin+ me 0.0006 tretinoin 4% azelaic acid and 4% niacanamide) I wanted to know how can I avoid purging? I double cleanse and night time wait for 15 min. And then apply missha essence 'skin 1004 centella ampoule then wait again for 15 to 20 min. And apply Mary and may mosturiser. What ingredients are best to use with tretinoin? I used it one and and then skipped next day but it's been 3 days I am using it regularly. My skin feels bit dry and after the application I felt burning sensation . Any suggstns plz. And one more thing can we use vitamin c and other ingredients at day time??
You cannot avoid purging or retinization with tretinoin, azelaic acid, and niacinamide, as they all accelerate skin cell turnover, leading to changes in your skin. However, you should generally apply such a treatment as follows: PM: Clean your face with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type (or double cleanse if that is what you usually do). Pat the skin dry with a clean towel. Wait 5-10 minutes for the skin to completely dry. Apply the skin+ treatment. Leave it as is, or follow with a non-comedogenic moisturizer, ideally a gel type. You can also give the treatment a few minutes to set if you feel the need. And yes, you can use Vitamin C during the daytime if you have a water-based serum that absorbs quickly. Morning routine: Clean your face with your favorite cleanser. Pat dry. Apply Vitamin C. Wait 30 seconds to a minute. Apply sunscreen.
Good advice Melissa..!!!!.... patience and careful wit the use of all those over hyped ( in my opinion) exfoliating products that nowadays a MUST is should be avoided... Retinols should be used in a conservative way!!!❤
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet what I meant was that there's this hype that makes it an obsession TO have an AHA, BHA product in your routine.. young skin doesn't need that much exfoliating every day...that's what's nice about having young skin.... washing your face, using a washcloth and for men, even shaving, is already exfoliating...rubbing and drying you skin after a shower has also this effect...and of course it's fun to use all these nice products 😀 still, all those different concentrations..formulations ....makes it so difficult to choose..resulting in over exfoliating 😢...that's why your videos are so helpful.... maybe, just maybe, people will reconsider using too much exfoliating products ❤
Hello, Melissa thank you for this video! this is my first time trying retinol in my skin care routine. I just want to ask if my routine with these products are okay to use along with retinol? - CeraVe hydrating facial cleanser - Advance snail 92 all in one cream - CeraVe resurfacing retinol serum - The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Serum - OMI Menturm Verdio UV moisture gel sunscreen
my skincare routine order is: facial cleanser, serum, moisturizer, retinol, mositurizer. I am doing the sandwich method to prevent flaking am i doing it right?
Hey! :) I recommend doing it like this: AM: - Cleanser - Essence - Niacinamide Serum - Sunscreen PM: - Cleanser - Essence - Retinol - (Optional) Moisturizer I don't think you need to do the sandwich method since you are already using COSRX Snail Essence before applying your Retinol. Doing the sandwich method is only needed if you have sensitive skin and are using a 1% Retinol treatment or working with Tretinoin.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thank you so much for replying! i appreciate you for sharing your beauty tips knowledge 🤍 i was also wondering if i can still use my niacinamide serum at night or i should just do it in the morning?
I was using glycolic acid toning solution and retinol. Now I’m thinking I’ll use cleanse+glycolic acid+moisturizer one night and cleanse+retinol+moisturizer next night.
It is not wrong using Glycolic Acid and Retinol in the same routine, but depending on your skin tolerance, skin concerns and if you are being new to those products. I do not recommend using them in the same routine because it can cause skin irritation :)
Hi Melissa So at the moment my concern is my eyes and my neck And I understand that I can use the 2 products that I asked you yesterday So can I use those products with the following ? This is my routine with ordinary products Every morning: Clean Buffer with copper Matrícula 10% Amido B5 Vitamin C+F with serum Moisturiser Now PM on day A and days B which I am alternating So Tuesday,Thursday,Saturday I use Glycoside acid7% Amido+B5 Moisturiser PM B days Monday,Wednesday,Friday I use Matrixyl 10% Amido Granactive retinoids 5% I am 56 years old with dry skin after listening you I decided to try this for 3 to 6 months So I fill that my eyes are left out and my neck Could you just mention some products that I could use !
Hey the Ordinary Peptides: (“Buffet”, “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1%, Argireline Solution 10%, Matrixyl 10% + HA) and Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) and AHA or BHA should not be used in the same routine. Also, as far as I am aware of “Buffet” and “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% already include a mix of the different Peptides. The difference is that “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% also includes Copper. So you could use it like this: AM 1 Routine: - Cleanser - Argireline Solution and/or Caffeine Solution - “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% or Matrixyl - Amido B5 - Moisturiser - SPF AM 2 Routine: - Cleanser - Caffeine Solution - Vitamin C serum - Amido B5 - Moisturiser - SPF PM 1 Routine: - Cleanser - Glycolic Acid - Caffeine Solution - Amido+B5 - Moisturiser PM 2 Routine: - Cleanser - Argireline Solution and/or Caffeine Solution - Matrixyl 10% - Amino Acids - Granactive retinoids 5% - (Optional) Moisturiser You can use all of those products on your neck as well, or have a look at NIOD's Neck Elasticity Catalyst (NEC) product :)

hi melissa! you’ve been a great help in simplifying skincare for me and i love your videos! i would like to know if i can use the following with retinol (i have combination-dry skin) - cleanser (cosrx salicylic acid daily gentle cleanser) - serum (ordinary niacinamide) - retinol (ordinary 0.5% retinol) - moisturiser (cerave moisturising cream)
I think the cream is "overkill" since the retinol is in squalane, so adding a lightweight moisturizer may be the better option, or one with NMF or just entirely skip it. But yes, you can use them together, and probably best to just test it to see how it goes; if it causes issues, exchange or skip the moisturizer! 😉 Edit: And that cleanser has a higher pH and often feels uncomfortable/drying for dry to normal skin.
Hello Mélissa, Thank you for this interesting vidéo. I have a général question: I am using The ordinary 0.5 every Night without moisturizer. I am 65 , no irritation. Would it be better for my wrinkles to use the Ordinary Granactive Retinol 2%? Thank you in advance for your answer
Hello Ariane, Granactive retinoid is different from retinol. And the next retinol for you would be 1%. So you cannot compare the retinol and retinoid strength. Still, you can try the 2%, and if you do, use the one in emulsion as it has the better formulation.

@@julijancce Do you use a BP cleanser, leave-on gel, or cream? What strength are you using? To 'cure' your acne, it's important to identify its triggers. It could be genetics or hormonal factors, but it might also be related to your diet or the skincare/cleaning products you use, which may contain preservatives, fragrances, and other potential toxins that can cause inflammation on your skin or in your body.

I've made several changes in my life, with a primary focus on the points I've emphasized above.
Generally, you should be cautious with such products on the eye contour and avoid applying them to the eyelids. Personally, I prefer to use them on the eye contour, but I always leave about a 1cm space in between my eyes and the product.

So, you would need to look into mineral sunscreen. Most of them leave a white cast, so look for one that has a light tint that matches your skin tone. As of now, I just tried, and like NIOD Survival 30. However, it's quite pricy. Or look into foundations or makeup powders that include SPF 30 :)

If you want to minimise the appearance of your pores, Niacinamide is usually the ingredient to look for. However, be realistic, everyone has pores and you can not change the actual size of it. I've been using retino- A 0.25% by johnsons and johnsons for quite some years now along with a mild honey cleanser and a moisturizer that has worked well for me but I have some red acne marks and my pores look large, I'm planning to use a hydrating toner from minimalist or klairs...are they a good choice?
Yes, however that won't help you much with your enlarged pores. My advice would be to use a Salicylic Acid cleanser with 2%-for example, The Inkey List Salicylic Acid cleanser (my recommendation) or the CeraVe Acne control cleanser. You could use that one in the morning and in the evening your retino- A 0.25%. But you can also add a hydrating toner if you like.
So I'm using Epiduo (Adaelene+Benzoyl peroxide) and I was wondering if this routine seems ok for someone with sensitive skin. It is as follows: 1)Cerave Hydrating Cleanser 2)Purito Centella unscented toner 3)LaRochePosay Toleraine Ultra cream 4)Epiduo 5)Sometimes I sandwich w la roche posay cream... Also, What is your opinion on me adding Either La roche posays HyaluB5 Serum or Skinceuticals Phyto corrective serum after the toner. I noticed my skin occasionally gets dehydrated (Like, when i use acne treatments I always get fine lines around my mouth which is hard to deal with, even though i am very cautious with how often i use it) and slightly red, so maybe these serums could help? Thanks in advance!!!!!!! (If you have any other product recommendation pls let me know :) )
Have you tried to use Epiduo already on its own? Because I think that is the Benzoyl Peroxide causing the redness and because both active ingredients are drying, you will notice the fine lines. I am also a longtime user of Benzoyl Peroxide, and I get the redness no matter what I do; it stays for about 20 minutes. What do you use during the day? Because if you keep it hydrated during the day, it should become better, so an excellent hydrating sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF would likely do the job. I am not sure if the Hyaluronic Acid serum would do the job. But you can try it.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Yes I have used epiduo before on its own before. I'm pretty certain that is the cause of the redness. I have also used benzoyl peroxide for ages. When I was14-16 i used duac gel. And in the day i wash with cerave cleanser, apply cerave moisturiser and then a spf. It's so annoying because benzyol peroxide gets rid of my skin texture in literal days, but it makes me so irritated. Do you think it would be worth trying another active like Retinol/Retinal or Just adapalene on its own, as opposed to pairing it with benzoyl peroxide in eiduo?
I haven't used Epiduo. I just use a 4% or 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser or Cream for my active acne (whenever I get acne), and I use Differin Gel (Adapalene) for dark red spots later on. This seems to work well for me on my face. But, I do not use them together. It can make the skin pretty dry...and I tend to work with hydrating toners/serums during the day and use Adapalene on its own in the evening. Do you suffer from active acne or dark spots?
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet I do have a few dark post-acne marks that have stuck around for over six months, But they have faded quite a lot by themselves. The main issue with my skin is the texture, I still get comedonal acne mainly on forehead and cheeks. It’s very mild. I also never get inflammatory, red, cystic spots anymore. I used a BHA cleanser for about a year and that pretty much got rid of it all. Epiduo has been great for me, but it’s just annoying cos it makes my skin tone a bit uneven and dehydrated…
@@benjaminshaw2939 What if you change from your Epiduo to a 4%-5% Benzoyl Peroxide or 2% Salicylic Acid Cleanser? This way you can rinse it off so that it isn't as harsh on the skin and you can just use it where you need it. I like Vichy's Mineral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Booster for hydration, however, I haven't tried Skinceuticals Phyto Serum. So, either go with the combination you've mentioned or choose Vichy's Mineral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Booster for hydration and a Vitamin C or Niacinamide serum for your dark spots.

Since you have acne-prone skin, you may want to use a 2% Salicylic Acid Cleanser (like The Inkey List one) or a 4%-5% Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser (like Differin or Panoxyl), but only use it in the AM. I had a look at the cream, but it does not state a % of how much Retinal it contains, so, I guess that it is pretty gentle. Keep in mind that I haven't tried that one. I can not tell you if your skin will purge, this mainly depends on how your skin adjusts to the cream. Usually, purging can last up to a month...
Hi Melissa, I'm about to start my retinol journey and I'm dry skin, so can I use isn't tree toner with inkey list retinol or niacinamide brightening toner of good molecules with inkey list retinol?
Hello 😀 The Inkey List Retinol is very gentle as it contains only a tiny amount of pure retinol. So that shouldn't be an issue. Still, you need to test it to see how your skin responds.
Hi cell regeneration means bringing new skin cells on top and retinol helps in cell regeneration and also boost collagen , aha works in the same way or not , plz say
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thanks for your reply. I use the 0.5% retinol in squalane from your recommendation. So what you say is to cleanse, then use retinol, hyloronic, niacinamide and then moisturize and then on other days just replace glycolic by retinol? (all ordinary products)
Hi there my current night time skin care is cleanser Retinol 0.5 vitamin c Niacinamide Buffet moisturizer my concerns are antiaging and uneven skin tone, am I doing it on correct order?
Hey :) What are you using in your AM routine? This looks like a bit too much in one routine :) Also, what Vitamin C are you using? Buffet and Niacinamide should not be used along with Vitamin C. Therefore, I recommend using them in separate routines. Those products can improve your skin concerns, but I recommend shorting it a bit :)
@@Lamajennifer I have not tried Hemp seed oil. So, therefore, I can suggest rosehip seed oil. Still, from my experience, Adapalene works best on its own.
Hey Julie! 😊 How are you doing? I hope that everything is fine in those crazy times!... Out of all the Cerave moisturisers, I like the PM lotion the most! I like how it feels on the skin, and it is also not too heavy for my preference and still feels moisturising enough! But I prefer La Roche Posay Toleraine Ultra Fluid moisturiser the most out of all the moisturisers I have haha🥰 How about you? Do you like Cerave moisturisers? Do you use the cream version or lotion?
Hello Melissa, is it okay if I opt to use my Retinol serum first followed by Niacinamide or other hydrating serums? I saw an article before that states retinol increases the absorption of other actives that's why it's logical to apply if first. Thank you in advance 💙
Hmm, what article was it? Can you share the link, please (or send it to me melissavandijk@posteo.net) But no, it does not do that. Hyaluronic Acid may do this; still, it may only do that if used in the same formulation. (which is not clear to me) Anyway, you use your water-based serums always before since they are lighter in texture. Or the best would be to only use the retinol on its own and use the other serums when not using it. This has the benefit that your skin isn't overwhelmed, and you may avoid irritated skin while still getting the same benefits. But also, what retinol do you use? 🤔
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet I am trying to find the article again and while finding it, I came across Dr. Davin Lim's video on Instagram in which he says, "Always apply thinnest to the thickest texture. Generally, apply deeper acting actives first. So for example, retinol works at the dermis while Hyaluronic Acid works at the top layer of the skin known as the epidermis." Also, I'm using a retinol marketed as a cream but it's runny and contained in an airless pump. The first ingredient of it is Aqua so I'm assuming it's a water based retinol.
@@alpasiliao5121 Ah, yes, that is confusing, but no other ingredients count. Since you have a cream, it has heavier substances; therefore, you use it afterward. But if you tell me the other components or the product's name, I can explain it better. Or please tell me the name of all the products you are using because that is important.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Oh, it's called Revitaglow Clinical Repair Cream Retinol. However, it's not "actually" a cream it's a translucent serum. At nighttime I use Niacinamide and that Retinol. What's your take on the "apply deeper acting actives first" such as the retinol?
@@alpasiliao5121 I checked but cannot find the ingredients list. But no, the serum/lotion/cream contains not only retinol but also other ingredients which are essential to consider. So these retinol products always have fattier substances in their formulation, such as oils or dimethicone etc. making it the heavier treatment. So now, layering your hydrating product on top will then do nothing. Now, your hydrating product, if in a toner, essence, or serum form, is lighter or not occlusive, which means it does not build a seal on the skin, so ingredients can still penetrate. The same goes for Niacinamide serums. So it only changes for an oil, cream, or lotion. Does that make sense 🤔
Hi Ms. Melissa, A pleasant day to you I'm new subscriber here I have a bit dry skin and acne-prone skin, may I know please if I can do below routine Morning: 1. Cetaphil gentle cleanser (dry to normal) 2. Cetaphil healthy radiance brightness refresh toner 3. Cetaphil pro acne-prone skin moisturizing lotion 4. SPF 30 Night: 1. Cetaphil gentle cleanser (dry to normal) 2. Cetaphil healthy radiance brightness refresh toner 3. Olay regenerist Retinol 24 4. Cetaphil pro acne-prone skin moisturizing lotion Thank u
I think that this is a great combination :) Since Marine Hyaluronics soaks well into the skin, and you should be able to layer Niacinamide and Retinol properly on top 🙂
Hey there ..i have a question which I'm really confused about...as a beginner should i start using ordinary retinol 0.5 in squalene once a week or more then once? Also i ordered niacinamide too should i include both active ingredients together it won't cause any harm right?
I would suggest alternating them in your evening skincare routine to ensure the skin isn't overwhelmed initially. You can also incorporate a rest day or two in between if you experience irritation or sensitivities. So, for your PM routine: PM 1: Cleanse face Pat dry Apply niacinamide PM 2: Cleanse face Pat dry Apply retinol PM 3: Rest day And so on.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet alright..and can u suggest something for acne not severe just few and acne marks also something for melasma will retinol help them or i should use something else.
@@javeriamemon6999I recommend checking this with a doctor/dermatologist as you usually need more potent treatments for melasma. He/she may also give you something for your acne marks that you can use while treating your melasma.
Hii melissa i have a question Can you easily switch to trentinoin after using retinol I use cerave resurfacing retinol and i want to switch to trentinoin Reasons because the retinol is finished and i cant afford it so i want to switch to retin A to clear my acne and dark spots
Yes, it is possible to switch from retinol to tretinoin, but it is important to do so gradually and with caution. Tretinoin is a more potent and concentrated form of retinol, so it can cause more irritation and sensitivity. When switching from retinol to tretinoin, it is recommended to start with a lower concentration of tretinoin and gradually increase it over time as your skin becomes more accustomed to it. This will help minimize the risk of irritation, redness, and peeling. It is also important to use a good moisturizer and sunscreen while using tretinoin, as it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
@@ZaraKhan-nt7lt This can happen, but they do not conflict. Also, your serum does not only contain Hyaluronic Acid alone it contains many other ingredients as well which can buffer Retinol as well.
Because it theoretically increase the amount of the retinol that gets absorbed into the skin, and therefore it can lead to irritation. I see this only as an issue when you are new to it. If your skin is already used to the product, it may be beneficial. But I am not sure about this. Therefore I mentioned it to reduce the likelihood for people of getting an irritation ;)
Hi Melissa... can you alternate 2 different retinol? I was using granactive 2% emulsion for almost 3 weeks but I did not see much change & so I decided to try Olay regenerate retinol 24 max... so far I’m loving it. I did not want my granactive to go to waste , so can I alternate them ? Like use Olay one night then use the granactive the next night?
Technically you can do this. But also you won't see much difference within three weeks. It usually takes about 4-12weeks to see some results. Some people do not see any, and for others, it may take even longer. But if you feel that the Olay works better, just continue using this. Personally if you think that the Granactive 2% isn't working for you I wouldn't use it anymore.
Hi! Can I use a toner with niacinamide (i have no idea how much content but it's 3rd on the ingredient list) with The Ordinary's niacinamide 10%? And can I use them with a retinol serum with niacinamide in it too? Thank you! Learning a lot from your content!
If you increase the amount of Niacinamide, you will increase the chance of getting an irritation. Some people can get redness/flushing when using too much of it. There is not much that I could find about this, but it may be best not to use multiple solutions with Niacinamide in a row since the skin may not need it, and it will likely just sit on top. The most challenging part is figuring out what % is in there. Most companies are not transparent so that we can guess or test it ;)
Factors like the environment, diet, stress, and/or lack of sleep can also trigger acne. So, I recommend looking into these to get to the root cause of your acne :) See here: www.youtube.com/@MelissaVanDijkOfficial/community

I bought the madelic acid, lactic acid, aha bha red serum, alpha arbutin and hyaluronic acid can you please help me what I should combine and what not ? Thank you in advance 😊
You have a lot of exfoliating acids. 😉 So you cannot use Lactic Acid, Mandelic Acid and the AHA+BHA Peeling solution in the same routine. I recommend starting with only one of them for the first weeks. You can find information about AHA+BHA here: www.paulaschoice.de/en/all-about-exfoliants (it's the same for The Ordinary) Apart from that, you can watch this video to learn how to use them in your routine. Hello, 🙂 What cleanser do you use? Generally, it does not lead to Blackheads. However, it can lead to breakouts, skin peeling, dryness etc., during the first few weeks, which is normal. I also overused them during the last week; since I was recording so many retinol videos, now I have breakouts all over. 😅

Hello. I m using retinol and i feel like my skin has adjusted but i m not sure if i see any improvement. I was looking for a replacement for my PHisohex facewash/cleanser. I think it does help with my acne but it contains triclosan and studies have shown that triclosan can make bacteria anti-resistant. I have acne-prone, rosacea and combination skin. The combination skin is less of a concern than acne and rosacea. So do you have any recommendation on any facewash or cleanser given my skin condition? Edit: I did some research. How about Cetaphil Pro Acne Prone Oil Control Foam Wash? As far as i have researched, they say its good for acne but does not help rosacea. I think as long as it does not trigger rosacea, i would be happy with it cause my skin is usually only red when it is triggered not always. Or Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Acne Face Wash?
Hello, I haven't tested the Cetaphil Pro Acne-Prone Oil Control Foam Wash, so I cannot tell you how it performs. And I do not have rosacea. However, from what I have read so far is that a Salicylic Acid cleanser can work well. It can help to fight your acne, and at the same time, it should be suitable for rosacea-prone skin. There are several options, and CeraVe has 2, one with a low % and the new Acne Control Cleanser (2%). The Inkey List also has a 2% Fragrance-Free Salicylic Acid face wash. So that would be my recommendation.

Nope. Never mix hydroxy acids with vitamin C. Vitamin is best suited with hyaluronic acid. Although, you may choose to use vitamin C during the day and exfoliating acids at night(that's if you use exfoliating acids every day). Or just use alternatively. Just not topically together.
Hm, it's the opposite. Vitamin C is better absorbed when the skin has a low pH. But most people feel burning and stinging when they are applied at the same time, but it absorbs better and will be more effective. So you can do this. But it is not a good option for sensitive skin types. Regarding Hyaluronic Acid, some say you shouldn't do it because the water may influence Vitamin C and decrease the efficacy and may increase the pH. But in practice, I feel that it is already absorbed before both get in contact, and it may be very beneficial. I only see an issue when you use a lot of product. But that's just based on my experience ;) Yes, you can use both in the same routine to answer your question, but you need to be careful when having sensitive skin.

hi...can i use vitamin c serum(cerave) in my morning routine?? and retinol (the inkeylist) in my evening?? and TO alpha arbutin 2%+ha at the next evening routine??
You do not need to use retinol when using differin, which is a much stronger retinoid. Therefore I recommend sticking only to Differin! See here to learn more: differin.com/learn/retinoid
When using retinol, how would I include all three into my routine: hyaluralic acid (LRP hyalu B5 serum), the ordinary niacinamide, and the ordinary argireline (only on forehead and under eyes)..or is this too much? I use retinol every other day and the other days I use Paula’s Choice Exfoliator and Azelaic acid booster with plans to include hyalu b5 and niacinamide. Too much? This is all evening. Thanks so much for your videos...take notes each time!
You can use Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide, and the Argireline solution in the same routine +your retinol. However, you should not use Argireline solution with Azelaic Acid or Paula's Choice BHA since it may interact and causes the peptides to break down. Apart from that, you can combine them as you like.
Thanks for the feedback ❤️
Differin Gel is more potent since it is another form that is already converted so that your skin does not need to do the job.
Or
Cleanser (other skin care products without exfoliating acids) moisturizer.

And one more thing can we use vitamin c and other ingredients at day time??
You cannot avoid purging or retinization with tretinoin, azelaic acid, and niacinamide, as they all accelerate skin cell turnover, leading to changes in your skin.
However, you should generally apply such a treatment as follows:
PM:
Clean your face with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type (or double cleanse if that is what you usually do).
Morning routine:
Clean your face with your favorite cleanser.
Pat dry.
Apply Vitamin C.
Wait 30 seconds to a minute.
Apply sunscreen.

Matrixyl 10%
Amido
Granactive retinoids 5%
I am 56 years old with dry skin after listening you I decided to try this for 3 to 6 months
So I fill that my eyes are left out and my neck
Could you just mention some products that I could use !
So you could use it like this:
AM 1 Routine:
- Cleanser
- Argireline Solution and/or Caffeine Solution
- “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% or Matrixyl
- Amido B5
- Moisturiser
- SPF
AM 2 Routine:
- Cleanser
- Caffeine Solution
- Vitamin C serum
- Amido B5
- Moisturiser
- SPF
PM 1 Routine:
- Cleanser
- Glycolic Acid
- Caffeine Solution
- Amido+B5
- Moisturiser
PM 2 Routine:
- Cleanser
- Argireline Solution and/or Caffeine Solution
- Matrixyl 10%
- Amino Acids
- Granactive retinoids 5%
- (Optional) Moisturiser
You can use all of those products on your neck as well, or have a look at NIOD's Neck Elasticity Catalyst (NEC) product :)

hi melissa! you’ve been a great help in simplifying skincare for me and i love your videos! i would like to know if i can use the following with retinol (i have combination-dry skin)
- cleanser (cosrx salicylic acid daily gentle cleanser)
- serum (ordinary niacinamide)
- retinol (ordinary 0.5% retinol)
- moisturiser (cerave moisturising cream)
I think the cream is "overkill" since the retinol is in squalane, so adding a lightweight moisturizer may be the better option, or one with NMF or just entirely skip it.
But yes, you can use them together, and probably best to just test it to see how it goes; if it causes issues, exchange or skip the moisturizer! 😉
Edit: And that cleanser has a higher pH and often feels uncomfortable/drying for dry to normal skin.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thanks for the reply! do you think the cosrx low ph cleanser would be more suitable for my skin type?

Thank you for this interesting vidéo. I have a général question: I am using The ordinary 0.5 every Night without moisturizer. I am 65 , no irritation. Would it be better for my wrinkles to use the Ordinary Granactive Retinol 2%?
Thank you in advance for your answer
Hello Ariane,
Granactive retinoid is different from retinol. And the next retinol for you would be 1%. So you cannot compare the retinol and retinoid strength.
Still, you can try the 2%, and if you do, use the one in emulsion as it has the better formulation.

To 'cure' your acne, it's important to identify its triggers. It could be genetics or hormonal factors, but it might also be related to your diet or the skincare/cleaning products you use, which may contain preservatives, fragrances, and other potential toxins that can cause inflammation on your skin or in your body.

what retinol do you use? 🤔
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thank u so much. I shall get those things:))
So I'm using Epiduo (Adaelene+Benzoyl peroxide) and I was wondering if this routine seems ok for someone with sensitive skin. It is as follows:
1)Cerave Hydrating Cleanser 2)Purito Centella unscented toner 3)LaRochePosay Toleraine Ultra cream 4)Epiduo 5)Sometimes I sandwich w la roche posay cream...
Hi Melissa! With the introduction of CeraVe's new Cream to Foam Cleanser which has Salicylic Acid (although they don't disclose the percentage and it's in the lower middle of ingredients list), will it be ok to use with their CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum?
The SA is only used to balance the pH in that formulation, so yes, you are OK to use that cleanser.

Hey! :)
Have a look at Cetaphil's Oily Skin Cleanser or Daily Facial Cleanser or CeraVe Foaming Cleanser. Any of them can be used in the AM and/or PM.

Can you share the link, please (or send it to me melissavandijk@posteo.net)
But no, it does not do that. Hyaluronic Acid may do this; still, it may only do that if used in the same formulation. (which is not clear to me)
Anyway, you use your water-based serums always before since they are lighter in texture.
So for example, retinol works at the dermis while Hyaluronic Acid works at the top layer of the skin known as the epidermis."
Also, I'm using a retinol marketed as a cream but it's runny and contained in an airless pump.

Hi Melissa, if I want to use Marine Hyaluronic, Niacinamide serum and Retinol 0.2%, do you think this is too much or I just skip Niacinamide serum?
I think that this is a great combination :) Since Marine Hyaluronics soaks well into the skin, and you should be able to layer Niacinamide and Retinol properly on top 🙂
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thank you for this tips, you really help me build my skincare routine❤️
So, for your PM routine:
PM 1:
Cleanse face
Pat dry
Apply niacinamide
PM 2:
Cleanse face
Pat dry
Apply retinol
PM 3:
Rest day
And so on.

Hi how r you dear?😍
Can i use cerave moisturiser on top and after apply retinol 🤔?..
Very helpful lesson I love it thankyou MELISSA💕💗
Hey Fariha, yes that okay :)
Hii melissa i have a question
Can you easily switch to trentinoin after using retinol
I use cerave resurfacing retinol and i want to switch to trentinoin
Reasons because the retinol is finished and i cant afford it so i want to switch to retin A to clear my acne and dark spots

Yes you can :)
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet as you said hyaluronic acid may cause irritation if use with retinol and clinique serum contain hyaluronic acid
@@ZaraKhan-nt7lt This can happen, but they do not conflict. Also, your serum does not only contain Hyaluronic Acid alone it contains many other ingredients as well which can buffer Retinol as well.
Hiii Melissa! Can i use corxs salicylic cleanser and witch hazel toner non alcohol and kiehls retinol? Thank you so much Melissa!
Yes, that shouldn't be an issue.
Melissa question: why do we no want the retinoid to be absorbed quickly?
Ty 😊

Hello,
I haven't tested the Cetaphil Pro Acne-Prone Oil Control Foam Wash, so I cannot tell you how it performs.

Heyy.... Can we use glycolic acid toner from The Ordinary and Vitamin C serum in the same routine?
But that's just based on my experience ;)
Yes, you can use both in the same routine to answer your question, but you need to be careful when having sensitive skin.
