Am sewing for over 55 years and try to teach my daughter and grandchildren too. You are a great teacher, no shouting/loud screeming, clear, no loud music! It's simple, but clear. And no, we DO NOT sew like an idiot that fast!! If you are a beginner; just sew as YOU like it, do not speed up!!

possibly the simplest and fastest yet comprehensive video on sewing machine tension out there! this triumphs over 15 minute videos with 90 second of channel introduction that end up saying the same things if not less clearly. This should be the top result when anyone searches for this explanation, excellent job!!

Ya know, my first experience with machine sewing was in 7th grade home ec (so we're talking the 1976-77 school year). I've machine-sewed on & off throughout the intervening years, and read books on sewing basics, and done Google searches regarding tension. And this video here? Is the FIRST ONE that actually explains what tension does, and which way you're supposed to adjust it depending on what your stitching looks like. Every other source I've seen has simply said to adjust the tension. That's it, just adjust it, no further explaining whatsoever. I'd bake you a batch of cookies in thanks if you lived close enough for me to drop off the plateful.

I am so glad it helped! And so glad you commented. I’m taking the summer off from videos because I have tons of family stuff going on AND I’m trying decide what direction to take my channel. Knowing that an experienced sewer found this valuable is very helpful!!!

Enjoy your summer. Please consider continuing your tips to help a beginner. Half the battle of getting started is making that first stitch and learning the parts of your machine. It can be so intimidating. I still get nervous threading my Machine especially through the needle properly.

That was last summer I took off and then I spent some time developing beginner sewer and machine mastery courses instead of posting here. I just posted my first UA-cam video after coming back, but was out of town for two weeks after I posted it, so I don’t quite have the next one ready 🙂. But I am definitely planning more!

The beginning? Are you having trouble starting a seam?

I understand. Not sure I can help you. I’m just illustrating how a machine works. Are you sewing by hand? If you are sewing by machine I would just start and end each seam by sewing the opposite direction over the end of the seam for a few stitches. But I’m no leather expert. Can you find a leather person? Are you sewing by hand or machine?
