20:31 - That's one of the main reasons why I love this channel. Internet is filled with assholes who never have drawn or write anything in their lives and feel entitled to trash and clickbait for easy monetization. And the sad thing is that UA-cam still amplifies those lousy voices in exchange for views. Cartoonist Kayfabe, on the other hand, is about two friends who are experts in their discipline who talk about the things they love. And why they love about it. Its not only wholesome but also educational and inspiring. Keep doing great, guys.
my love and respect for Ed and Jim grew more and more with each Rob, Todd, Sam, Kevin&Peter and Jae video, fuck everyone who doesn't fuck with Kayfabe
This era of Todd feels like sugary breakfast cereal for my eyes. I had a cousin who collected all this stuff in the 90s and passed lots of it on to me. So many memories!
"comics were a cheap toy" yeah, it was way easier to convince my mom to buy me a couple of 65 cent comics when we were at the grocery store (or the convivence store, drug store, etc. comic racks were everywhere) than it was to convince her to buy me a $4 dollar GI Joe or a $25 transformer.
You'll find Felix The Cat on page 2 on the faces below when Spider-Man is rising above it all - when the web crosses his left thigh.
Believe or not, the first comic-book series called simply Spider-Man didn't appear until 1990.
"I can draw that"
Yes. That was my biggest draw back then with these comics in the 90s. I felt like it was the exact art I wanted to see. The stuff I saw in my head. And it stuck. I wanna be a comic artist, but I wanna make comics that look like the stuff I love from about the mid 80s to mid 90s.
Yep, where heroes looked heroic and females were drawn with sex appeal and it was all fun.
I just grabbed a box of my old comics from my parents’ house, still have the silver and colour cover editions.
I fondly recall the instant regret of opening the polybag
Always great to hear passionate people talk about what makes them tick! Doesn't get better, thankyou Kayfabe.
From a different video, but I was able to find all three Michael Zulli TMNT issues the other day at my LCS . I was so excited man! Feeling the Cartoonist Kayfabe affect!!!
Beautiful cover. A coworker, who's husband worked for Marvel gave me a copy signed by Stan Lee of this comic for my birthday.
i was saying "worst game ever" the same exact time ed started saying it (x-men for nes)
I wonder if Jim's new project is Spider-man related in any way?
It would be my first webhead purchase in decades
Thanks for shouting out my local, Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find!
Ah! I fucking love all these spider-man related videos! But all the videos you guys make are great. Insightful, fun, entertaining, interesting, and helpful as I'm working on my art. I want to be a comic book artist, and I've learned about some techniques and tools that I wouldn't have heard of for a long time. Not to mention all the independent comics that I've gone and read because of you guys. Thank you!
I have this book! ❤
in fact, was my first spider man's book and from the start I fall in love with the character and the todd's art! make me wish become myself a comic book artist!
just found about 20 copies of this issue, different covers and bags from over 30 years ago when my dad knew Todd from local shows here in Canada and told me he really liked him, I always had to stay home and tend the stores, a few are signed on covers and inside first page and one of the #1'S is signed from todd to my daughters name on that second title page. I just happened to open it up, dont even know why i opened that particular one and opened to second page.. weird. I guess dad had Todd sign and then totally forgot to give it to her after he got home.
three decades in a box with nickel comics!
Going to frame it in a shadow box for her. she would have been about a year old then, she is 32 now and she will be stoked that grandpa got that for her from Mr McFarlane
I remember paying $10 for an autographed copy that had a special, red, spider stamp on the back cover. I thought I would be rich one day because of it! Not so much...
I bough the silver variant about 7-8yrs ago for $10. They are $20-30 now for upgraded copy. So they are slowly going up in price.
I love the fact that you guys bring in discussion of art and excellence in all endeavors while talking about our love comics.
The Malcolm Gladwell podcast is “revisionist history”. Really fun listen going over certain successful people not caring what the popular culture felt. One example is the avoidance of underhanded free throws because it doesn’t look cool enough, even though it’s easier.
The underhanded free throw episode is great. Wilt Chamberlain is undoubtedly, in my mind, one of the five greatest players ever - but he was foolish to not continue shooting underhanded free throws.
"Worst game on Nintendo, ever."
Which can be said about every single LJN game produced. Absolute garbage.
Anyone else notice mj's eye color change from blue to green?
Just finished my Todd/Spidey run finished my amazing that I needed psyched to get it in the mail I had all 14 he did for this run. I did buy Spawn #1 but i never really got into that book and times were tough and I kind of left comics for a bit. I'm happy that I got my favorite Super hero paired with my favorite artist run all his amazing stuff/and his regular Spiderman run!
I seem to remember felix the cat being somewhere in the opening double page image.
Correct, he's in the crowd in the lower left on the first page of the double page spread.
I have 12 copies of this. I purchased them back when I was in school. Over 30 years ago. I just got them all out. It was worth the investment.
10:57 In the last panel of the second page i sense a vibe of the " splatters techinc " from red room. Or viceversa.
I remember finding Felix the cat somewhere in the crowd of the double page spread of pages 2-3 back in the day.
Back when this came out, I was at a comic book convention and overheard someone talking to Neil Gaiman about the writing on this adjectiveless Spider-Man, wherein Neil quipped, "Why does Todd McFarlane do that to the English language? It never did anything to him."
I don’t get some of the hate for the story. I think it’s fine, not exactly what I think of when I think of Spider-Man, but it’s certainly not bad. I feel that some people hold this story to higher standards then some other spidey stories. Maybe it’s dislike for McFarlane as a person
Dang, it's asses to elbows in those narrow NY back alleys on that first splash page.
Iconic cover.
I got the silver and gold printed torment issues
Man those webs must have taken so long. His spidey is a nightmare to draw with the amount of web lines he insists on lol
I love this run and the artwork..but like most when i was a kid i thought i had something
20:06 I guess Todd must have listened to a lot of criticism before the thing is published - I think he was in a pre-defensive mode!
Like the skunk said when the wind changed, it all comes back to me now...
Is there a collected edition of the McFarlane Spider-man run with matte finish pages out there?
i have all variants of issue 1 best dollar i ever spent
This book is literally in every collection lol
felix the cat is on the bottom of page two mixed in with the crowd
"2 million" is how you write "2 million"
yeah, I have the silver one
Unbelievably important comic. Remember the day it came out like it was yesterday. Was it a "good" comic? No idea. All I know is, for good and bad, it changed the scene SO much.
14:40 I see some vaughn bode lizard influence in the head
Icon of comic !!!!
Vendo la revista nro 1 de Spiderman versión argentina de Todd MacFarlane del año 1995
I 💘 spider and he still is the shit!!
😍🎅😀👅📹😳✌😂😜😀😍😀
This Represented the End of the Beginning and the Beginning of the END since the ART Style of Comics took out the Writing and Development of Characters in Comics since the Creative Golden 1980's...STYLE over SUBSTANCE was the Norm in the 90's!!!
With all this being said... how much is this comic book worth?
Turbo graphics 😂
The collector in me wants to slaps his hands and out the book in a bag and board 🤣 before he even opened it. Which I hate because how else fo you enjoy a comic. Good thing for multiples lol
Does Todd do commissions btw?
Love Todd's style, but I'd argue Erik Larsen, who came right before Todd, was better.
Never been a fan of McFarland's drawing. Hate the faces. Spawn always looks good somehow, but the people have crappy faces with weird bulges all over, lol! I'm more driven by the stories than the art anyway... Good work boys!
Todd makes way too many fucking books man. He single handedly destroyed the comic allure and value by oversaturation of the market.
