Wow - what a brilliant analysis this was!
Looking back on it now, the stories during his entire Spider- man run were definitely lacking for sure ….
but the art just had so much power and energy and was just so much fun that you barely noticed!
I’ve picked up a few of these Artist Editions and the way you guys decipher each and every page and discuss the tools and techniques used in them is just a revelation.
Easily some of the best Comic Art analysis to be found anywhere on the internet.
McFarlanes titanic influence was felt for many years - and truthfully it is missed now!
When I glance through many of the mainstream comics on the stands today, a lot of the art,as beautiful as it looks on the surface, seems sort of static and almost lifeless compared to this.
Todd was definitely a one of a kind force in the industry and seeing his work collected in this way really shows everyone exactly why he is considered a comics legend!

That's a great looking book! I think you guys are a little too hard on David Michelinie, though. I heard an interview where he was asked about working with Todd. He mentioned that he asked Todd what he liked to draw, and Todd told him he liked capes. There aren't many Spider-Man characters who wear capes, so that's why Michelinie used the Prowler and Killer Shrike in stories. It was all to give Todd a chance to draw some capes.

This hits soooo hard! Todd with deadlines and editing with a monthly deadline really pushed him as an artist, I was into Spawn for a hot minute but this Spiderman work really shows why he was and is so beloved. This shit hits guys!

Uncle Todd signed my copy at NYCC this past Thursday. He said it was the first time he saw the book, and spent a good amount of time looking through it to see what it contained. He said it brought back a lot of memories of sleepless nights.

Been waiting for this one! Tried to meet "Uncle Todd" at NYCC but couldn't pull that off, but mentioned your Shoot interview talking with Chris Claremont.

Stippling on photocopies was done by laying a stipple film between the image and the copy bed

I loved that full bleed black on the adjective-less book.

I haven't seen it yet but I already like it. This book and this team - it just cannot go wrong. I need to start saving money for this monster.

First Artist’s Edition I’ve ever bought. McFarlane’s Spider-Man art was like that first bowl of Cap’n Crunch you ate on Saturday morning - pop bliss. I’ll never tire of looking at it.

The building that Jim refers to at 25:35 is the Vancouver Art Gallery. Todd lived in the Vancouver area at this time and might have photographed it from different angles for reference. It is used often in films as a NY courthouse. It's cool how he used the lion statues to come alive on this splash page.

Spider-Man #8 would be _the_ cover of original art I'd want, love that you broke out the tracing paper for that beauty 😂

Does anyone know if they are going to come out with a smaller version of this, like one of those smaller paperback versions they have of other artists? I just can't afford the big bucks for this right now. :(

    Such beautiful pages...
Almost all of the pages has those giant inch thick white borders just to show a few bigger ones , why not stretch the size of the images to make it bigger ? what a weird decision

I've been a Spider-man fan since the late '60's and while I liked McFarlane when he first came on in the Amazing Spider-man issues, he quickly became too stylized for me. He's all style over substance. I realize how successful and popular he is, but his storytelling is poor and he can't draw anything but hero pinups. Admittedly, I'm not familiar with any of his work after Marvel as I simply didn't follow him.

I was a little kid of about 5 years at the time of McFarlane, but even I could tell it was special, but also how absolutely terrible Peter and MJ looked!
