When this showed up on the shelves it was just technically outstanding. There was nothing like it in terms of color and printing quality. And it didn't even cost significantly more than the Big Two's titles printed on recycled toilet paper just down the aisle. Not to say that there weren't still such things in magazines like Heavy Metal or the indie productions of Richard Corben's Fantagor at that moment, but it wasn't something you'd expect to ever see on the regular comic rack.
Can’t wait for more spawn. Got a $170 craigslist lot this morning. Had a signed Todd and capullo 32, 6 #100 variants, 5 #300 variants, #102-140 missing maybe 5 issues. Some are really good shape. First she spawn, first gunslinger spawn cameo, and a lot more. Spawn 50. Plus amazing spidey 911 issue, batman adventures 28, 12 issues of frank miller sin city, Star Wars republic #62-81 all above 9.0....and wizard xwing rogue squadron special edition. I think I did pretty good!
Nice trip down memory lane as usual. Took me back to standing in line outside Golden Apple Comics to get autographed copies of the first wave of Image comics upon each release. I love some of the call outs, like that oh so iconic cover, that I feel never gets the attention it should, and those ads. I also ordered from American Comics and Entertainment This Month. Those were like the comics equivalent of Columbia House or BMG back in the day. Such a different time!
Todd's actually pretty good at the horror stuff, and Spawn leaned that way for a bit before becoming more superhero-y. I remember he tried to do that with the Spider-Man series that was launched for him with the Lizard stuff, but it seemed off-tone for Spidey to many.
I was at that Chicago Comicon and waited in line to get into the Image tent. I have a promo poster somewhere signed by all of them that were there. Guess I should try and see if I could find it somewhere...
I was loving the Image comics Boom back then. I was in Highschool and picked everything up I could, every week I'd make a 30 min trip to a town that had a comic shop. Bought 3 copies of Spawn 1 LOL. Those were great days.
There were painted covers on mainstream comics going back to the early '80s (and indie comics did it on the regular -- particularly Aircel, where just about everything they put out in the '80s was airbrushed or painted), but the printing was nothing like this. They usually had a low dpi, around 200 I'd guess, and the paper quality wasn't great. It wasn't just the airbrushing and the printing, though. This cover was also especially vibrant.
I just want to know if Todd Mcfarlane gives out watches to employees who retire at his company. Also, you should go through some Ben Dunn Ninja High School comics :)

Airbrushed covers seemed a whole lot more cutting edge 5 years earlier with those Punisher mini series covers imo.
