Mr Rogers changed my life when I was a little girl. After my parents’ divorce, I rarely saw my father. I was suffering so much because I wasn’t getting any guidance or validation from a male role model. When I discovered Mr Rogers’ show on PBS when I was about 6 years old, I was blown away. Mr Rogers looked right into the camera and said, “you are important. You are valuable. You have so much to give. Do you know how special you are?” Completely life changing.

Mr Rogers taught me how to draw a star when I was little! On his show he said he would wait while I got a piece of paper and a crayon. Meanwhile my parents were not involved in my life beyond the basics. Mr Rogers gave me nurturing and encouragement that I so desperately needed.

I’m 51, born in 72. I remember the Electric Company, the old Sesame Street, reruns of Mickey Mouse Club and Captain Kangaroo…but Mr. Rogers is the only one who brought a touch of patience, kindness, joy, and respect to his show. I had many first lessons learned from him. He was the epitome of what and how Jesus wants us to treat and love each other.

Here's a story about Mr. Rogers. I was head of public affairs at my PBS station in Dallas, Texas. I was put in charge of ferrying Rogers around to different personal appearance locations where children were always present. So, in the car, he would gird himself for ear-piercing screams from 5-year olds that would damned near take the top of your head off. Then, the children would crawl all over him. He would give a speech and we would go to the next venue. We got to one location at an Episcopal Church. I stopped the car and he sat in the front seat with his eyes closed, speechless. Then he -- understandably, from my persepctive -- said something to the effect that these appearances take every bit of energy he has because they were so intense. My recollection is that he said this with some amount of dread in his voice as he was about to immerse himself in another covey of ear-piercing screams and snotty little kids grabbing at him. It was then that I realized that being Mr. Rogers was no easy task.

I’ve been practicing this and it’s bringing me such Joy! Making someone feel essential.People love it. And it makes Me feel essential! I loved this man because he offered a glimpse of the beauty missing in my life. When I offered to take my mom to see the 2019 movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, she declined saying that she had always detested him and his program. That explains a lot. I never missed a show from its release in 1968 (I was 6) for the next five or six years. I dreamed of a father like him. My children also watched Mr. Rogers a little--we had no television in our home, so it was unusual to catch it. He made a huge impression on me though sadly not enough to erase my parents' influence. But little by little I've adopted His gentleness and shed their harshness. At sixty, I try to be like Him on my way to becoming more Christlike.

“Graceful receiving” what a beautiful way to talk about listening to a person. I want to receive what is truly you and to value it. This is “true religion” as the scriptures say, or truly the way of Christ

I have a humongous tattoo of the neighborhood trolley on me to remember to be more like Mr. Rogers than any human could be. I’m a foster parent and I’d love my children and I am cis gendered white Christian stay at home mom and I love every flavor of humanity. I can’t imagine having hate in my heart based on skin color or spiritual belief. I can’t imagine a better human than Mr. Rogers. I don’t know if the Bible is true, but love and acceptance and peace are true and Mr. Rogers was on film being a true humanwith love and decency. We all fall short, and should strive to be more like him.

Imagine sitting through a class at 7:00 am with a professor who talked exactly like this guy, fighting to stay awake after a sleepless night studying for an exam… that was college and I hated that class with that infamous unintentional ASMR professor 😩😩
