"How to Tame Your Dragon" sounds like a tutorial you found deep on the internet as a kid and are now scarred for life

I-
I read these book as a kid. What was the point of using the name if it has nothing to do with them? I loosely remember the boy and the main dragon have to defeat a golden dragon that hunts and killed other dragons. While they travel it is hunting them down because it wants to kill off the remaining dragons. This seems nothing like the book.
Yeah i thought the original book was actually really good
Also there's a plot about a homunculus who works for the evil dragon. He knows he will be immortal unless he forms an emotional attachment to someone, then he will die when they die.
He has a whole plot about how he comes to terms with mortality, and becomes friends with the main character.
This movie doesn't deserve that plot point
I remember this too! I loved this boom series.
I mean, nearly entirely ignoring the book material is another way it’s similar to the How To Train Your Dragon movies lol
0:57 OMG that was the FIRST ever "big boy" book I ever read!! i should give it a reread. just seeing the cover made me feel nostalgic
I loved this book as a kid! (And Cornelia Funke’s books in general!) I remember the dragons “ate” moonlight and traditionally needed to fly around at night to feed, but they moved to a high mountain where they didn’t need to fly to get access to full moonlight, so they became sedentary and eventually turned to stone. The main dragon on the book cover was the only one left and went into human civilization to get help, and the plot ensues from there.
Absolutely none of that seems to be represented in this film. 😒 Which is a shame, because the dragons and lore were unique, and finally we get a movie adaption that could have been faithful and had a healthy life on streaming, but instead we get this thing that….trashes all of that and is shamelessly derivative. What a shame!
That honestly sounds so interesting! They could've adapted that story faithfully and made a beautiful magical movie :,,,,
Oh my gosh I Know that author name!🤩
I need to read the book instead lol even though I’m an adult now.
Actually, the main character came from a different land (somewhere in Scotland) and there was more of his species there. The high mountain was a place he needed to seek out to save the dragons back at home from humans
I really like Cornelia funke’s reckless series but I could never bring myself to read this one because it just seemed to similar to httyd
i read this book when i was a kid, and it was my childhood. firedrake (the dragon) was the very character that got me into fantasy as a whole through his personality and retellings of his species through his own words; how the dragons fed from moonlight and could only fly if it was night time, the ancient tale of an artificial dragon draped in gold who was built to destroy every single one of the silver dragons (who served to be the main antagonist of the book alongside his dwarf henchman), and the boy who sworn to help protect his dragon friend along with that cat-creature-thing-with-so-many-arms and it was honestly a fantastic read. i highly recommend it, as it's nothing like this awful movie and is pretty much worth the time you pour into reading it. also, at the end, the villain gets a rather brutal death and isnt wasted potential like the nettlebrand (the gold artificial dragon) in this film. what a waste this movie was. it could have been so much more than just a ripoff that knows it and it could have been an actual homage to a brilliant book that shaped the childhoods of many. thanks for the video nick
That’s wat I’m saying thank u
That book slaps
I hate the movie with a passion because I loved the book so much. It‘s a really good read, even as an adult/ older teenager
The furry creature is sorrel, a brownie. She is also addicted to shrooms. No joke.
Also one thing I noticed that makes me annoyed but also confused by myself is that nettlebrand doesn't have any of his water powers, he travels in a freaking submarine and communicates via skype. It's weird because if that was in a badly animated meme parody on youtube I would find that funny, but it isn't here.

This movie makes me so sad, because it was "based on" a book I loved as a kid, and the movie just looks and is terrible T-T Both HTTYD and Dragon Rider were my favorite books and its sad to see Dragon Rider's movie be such a poor quality cash grab
He keeps calling the main guy Tom Holland, but I wish he realized that the voice actor is actually the same guy that voices Ferb in Phineas and Ferb.
he voices the dragon tho
@@muircaroni Oh, my bad. I just saw the cast on the poster, and assumed he played the kid.
As someone who grew up loving and rereading the original book countless times, this movie hurts me. Nettlebrand was such an intimidating villain, IIRC it’s stated that he killed his creator as soon as he was given life. Now here he is, just leaving after getting a tinder match…

@@rpgnut5897 Yep! I believe the book is Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke. I remember it actually being a pretty good book too... Shame how this movie treated it.

@@rpgnut5897 No, a lot of the characters in this adaptation are also in the book. I think that's kind of where the similarities end, though... I don't remember too much about the book, so I can't really say for sure.
@@rpgnut5897 Yes and no. It follows the book down to an EXTREMELY basic level and features the same characters. But the movie skips a lot of stuff in the books, pretty much abondened a lot of the lore and completely ruined the characters. Even the author herself stated her dissaproval and dislike of the movie, even apologised for it to her fans.

The book released in 1997, that this abomination of a movie is based on, was my childhood. I was so upset they treated it like another sloppy kids film. From the get-go, I was skeptical of how it would turn out when I heard the Gnomeo and Juliet studio was making it. The characters have none of the qualities that made them so charming in the book. I hated how they dragged technology into the plot line and none of the magical rules were applied to create conflict, like dragons only being able to fly under moonlight. This garbage movie needs to be lost to time so a better studio can make a true adaptation.
As someone who had to watch this with my little cousin, I can confirm, since I've seen it, it does indeed exist.
I watched this movie because I was bored, and in a rabbit hole of random movies I find on Netflix like Nezha. I have to say I didn’t enjoy this movie even a quarter as much as Nezha 😂

Yeah, Inkheart was absolutely terrible. And....this Movie sadly isn't any better.
Trivia: the movie was actually more based on Dark Souls 2 rather than the book mentioned, you can see that by the incoherence and disconnection of the places and it’s connections, first you have some modern city then a few miles away and by crossing some tunnel you get to Drangleic Castle.

I haven’t read the book for a very long time, but I’m pretty sure that’s the right author. It’s honestly kind of sad that they took the book, which is quite good from what I remember, and turned it into some strange ripoff of a different series that massacred the source material.
@@lupineinbloom it really is. They did an awful adaptation of inkheart too which is sad cause that book was amazing and my first introduction to the author
@@cabbageking7519 I don’t think I ever read that one, but I think I remember hearing about the movie. It’s unfortunate that book adaptions almost always flop in some form.
@@lupineinbloom I would definitely recommend it. It really is unfortunate that great books get messed up in film a lot of the time unless a big studio gives it a lot of money so they can properly adapt it but even then it's liable that they mess it up because they make unnecessary changes. Like changes are great if it improves it and I'm not saying the books are perfect but a lot of studios just try to do wats popular with their movies than staying faithful to the story
The way this creates genuine anger because they just didn’t try. True disappointment. 😮💨

I entirely forgot the book existed until I saw the book cover and my had exploded with fond memories. Honestly pissed that they'd ruin such a good book I like this
even outside the ripoff, it’s shameful that they did… this, they had the source material and they made this.
Knowing the characters by heart, here's what and who I know:
Firedrake - the main silver dragon protagonist. In the novels, he's a brotherly figure to Sorrel and Ben; he can only fly at night with the exception of Moon Dew. In the movie adaptation, he's curious, but also naïve...and ironically cannot breathe his signature blue fire.
Sorrel - Scottish Forest Brownie and a somewhat neutral character. In the books, she was sharp-tongued around literally anyone, including Firedrake. In the movie adaptation...pretty much watered down to where she and Firedrake are BFFs.
Ben - orphaned human boy. In the books, he is shown to be generous and a major help to Sorrel and Firedrake despite being 12 years old at the time. In the movie adaptation...you saw for yourself.
Nettlebrand - Main antagonist. A.K.A. "The Golden One" in the books, his armor is virtually indestructable to even silver dragon's fire, unless exposed to [DATA EXPUNGED]. Don't get me started on the movie adaptation; it's bad enough ConstantinFilm made him into a 580-year-old stalker.
Twigleg - Homunculus servant and tiny genius (and even Cornelia Funke's personal favorite character). About as old as Nettlebrand, but in the novels he was able to outsmart Nettlebrand and divert the tyrant into a dry desert...temporarily. Won't even get started on the movie adaptation; not worth mentioning.
I can't imaging Corenia Funke was in any way involved in this, I don't think any writer would let their book be utterly destroyed like this.
What's worse some people might even associate the movie with the book and get mad at the book too.
I hope she wasn’t, also not to mention the FUCKING DESIGNS- SORREL LOOKS DISGUSTING.

I read this book as a kid and I distinctly remember somewhere it said near the end in a Q and A section that Cornelia Funke turned down a offer to adapt *Dragon Riders* because she didn’t want it to be adapted. So it’s really upsetting that this has happened to that beautiful book, such a terrible adaptation. Also if you go to Funke’s official website she responded to the question *Do you like film adaptions of your books?* with “Selling movie rights means accepting the fact that the richness of a novel needs to be shrunk for the big screen. Which makes TV so much more interesting. But I find it unacceptable when an adaptation changes my characters - which, for example, happened with Dragonrider.”
This makes me sad because I love the original book of Dragon Riders, and seeing it butchered like this to rip off how to train your dragon just breaks my heart
This movie is so sad because it feels like there was SO much work put into it and so many ideas and fantastic lil designs n such (like that robot dragon, those weird fire fairies and a lot of the side dragons look neat). It's so strange and annoying that it's literally TRYING to be a rip-off. Sucks to see.
Especially if you read the book and know the characters and the actual story that was killed by it...
The robo dragon (I don't know his English name) for example is supposed to actually look like a real gold dragon, which is unusual because silver dragons are typical in their world, but he was created by an alchemist, during a time when knights were still around (middle age?) to catch dragons, and can't actually fly like them.
The boys (Ben) personality was replaced by an absolute idiot that acts like hes someone that he isn't.
Firedrake (who is called Lung in my language) isn't actually afraid of flying and can only fly when there is moonlight.
The kobold girl is a natural sassy and protective of the silver dragon. She doesn't trust Ben at first but warms up to him and teases him from time to time, which she does with everyone. She is a total sweetheart and doesn't trust everybody easily.
The genie is actually really helpful and kind. He can answer every question you asked of him as long as it wasn't asked before. If it was you will be as his servant. He's known as 'the genie with the thousand eyes' and each eye can show you something different in the world. To ask something of him you must fulfill a few things first. Because he's so mighty that a normal lamp couldn't handle him, he lives in a car that he stole from, I think it was, a sultan.
@@REDFRLegend the robo dragon's name is nettlebrand in english
Another movie to trick grandma’s into buying it for their grandkids
Some fun trivia: huge part of this movie (if not all of it?) was animated in Germany, with people from my Uni working for it (one of my professors was the head of animation). We also had a the director and producer visit the uni for an event and tell us about their experience working for this film. Its the directors first feature and he has been trying for YEARS to get some of his original scripts to get approved, but that never happened (In Germany you need a LOT of bureaucracy approved to even get a small chance of getting a movie made, you are way more dependent on sponsors and studios, its way different than in the US f.ex.). So when he got the chance to make a movie about a famous German childrens book, he took it. But knowing German films in general I highly doubt he had much to say in the script and there was huge interference from executives (like… German youtubers voiced at least to of the main characters, make of that what u will) and they actually pushed for the mockbuster-thing, since many German animated movies end up that way. Really, its such a shame, because I know a lot of people put a lot of effort into working on this film (even if it might not seem that way :‘D )
Edit: of course this doesnt justify how bad the film is. Its pretty damn bad. i just thought it might be interesting to know :D
He HAS to be joking that he's never heard of Sky
He’s from another country that doesn’t have that….not everyone know 😅
I swear to God I googled it and nothing came up. What the hell is Sky.
He is probably joking. And Sky is a streaming service. Here in Germany it's more well known for football and stuff
This movie is just sad. It could've become the next big dragon movie if they follow the freakin source material or at least change things up a bit like HTTYD.
Infact, i remember reading this book back in 2015 or 16 at the time where i was a huge dragon fans/enthusiast. I discovered this book at my school library because my phone had no data back then and can't play computer games. Sadly, i never got to finish it and return the book and moved on.
Years later, I rediscovered and unlocked my memory the book again thanks to this movie but it's not what i want. I don't remember the story anymore but there's no way it was the same as the book. I mean making fun of HTTYD? Wtf? Also, the dragon design is HORRENDOUS! It was way better in the book. Heck, i remember there was a fanart on DA years ago!
Hopefully i can reread the book again someday. I stopped reading it because i'm not into reading back then. I think it was halfway not sure.
How could you not include the best line of this dumpsterfire?

Their eyes stare deeply into my soul...I dont think Ill ever feel joy again
I knew the movie was referencing or adapting the book of Dragon Rider, but man. They've missed the point and story elements to it, and I agree that the locations just don't make sense, how the heck is an evil wizard castle just a mile down the mountain??
Also yeah, could have been better if it were a Spyro movie, but then again. Leave the purple boy to his games for now

This was one of my favorite books during my youth, it's still near and dear to me. Up to this point, I had no idea they made it into a movie and, after watching this, I cannot stress just how much this movie physically pains me.
I always thought that this was a movie that came out of nowhere that is based off the book "Dragon Rider" by Cornealia Funk. Here they have the dragons, the brownie, the cursed gold dragon who ends up melting in the end. I feel like this has greater semblance to that rather than ripping off how to train your dragon.
9:26 Y'know as much as I love the HttYD trilogy this is exactly how 3 ends and it really hurts the movie for me. Protect the dragons? Nah, let's just hide them in a magical underground land until the world is somehow inexplicably ready for them! Yeah that makes sense!
I believe in Big Floppa supremacy.
The Hog Rider card is unlocked from the Spell Valley (Arena 5). He is a quick building-targeting, melee troop with moderately high hitpoints and damage. He appears just like his Clash of Clans counterpart; a man with brown eyebrows, a beard, a mohawk, and a golden body piercing in his left ear who is riding a hog. A Hog Rider card costs 4 Elixir to deploy.
Oh shit, I remember watching this on Netflix of all things because I enjoy watching bad animated films. I never thought I'd ever see it brought up again so thanks Nick to covering this sleep paralysis demon dragon movie
Which ones have you seen so far?
8:21 This is actually a pretty accurate description of the book, from what I remember anyway. I Read the book as a teen, and i remember it literally being that "Its our world, but there's all this crazy stuff going on just around the corner" and non of it is actually explained or developed much. So I honestly wouldn't blame the movie for this, cuz its pretty true to the book from what I see here. And just for clarification, the book is really good, and this movie clearly sucks, but the world building seems pretty similar.
Aknowledging that something is wrong and not doing anything about it, that's the worst type of self awareness that exists in any media.
How to Train Your Dragon was by far my favorite DreamWorks trilogy. I even watched all the spin-off movies and shows (Except for the Nine Realms, that looks cringe) and they always did such an awesome job tying them all in and making them super entertaining and fun.
*But seeing a movie trying to ride on that success really offends me.*
Trust me - you aren't missing much by dodging the Nine Realms. 😶
Agreed.
what makes it even worse is the fact that the dragon rider book is actually really good (and has nothing in common with httyd). whatever studio created this abomination should be burned to the ground for destroying such an amazing book.
Its so sad because the animation quality looks actually pretty good compared to most rip-offs
Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke is the book that got me into dragons. Part of the reason I became a huge HTTYD fan in the first place is because I was already on the dragon fan train, because I read this book years before. I've wanted a movie for this story for longer than HTTYD has existed, and now, to be an adult and see that this is the movie this book got...it's depressing. (My poor boy Ben. They absolutely butchered him.)
Also, this book came out in 1997, why are they using the Internet? And skyping? Instead of magic? Kill me
The fact that they managed to get Freddie Highmore and Thomas Brodie-Sangster to voice in this travesty INFURIATES ME.

wtf did they do to this masterpiece of a book
I just looked up who plays the main human kid, it’s Freddie Highmore (aka The Good Doctor, Bates Motel, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
Oh man, I just love that bit about "Industrialism is bad, but Industrialism is no big deal. Don't let humans destroy your world, but then just let humans do whatever." It's like it doesn't know if it wants to be an 80s or 90s environmentalism story or a modern day story about defending humanity at all costs. XD

I watched the movie and noticed how similar it was to How to Train Your Dragon...in like a 10 minute section of the movie. The only part of this movie that really hammered that home was just at the beginning when the dragon finally met the boy. The rest of the movie stayed pretty faithful to the book, besides the annoying and uneeded modernization. I wouldn't say it's a "rip off", really, but the dragon designs in this movie are horrendous and the only good designs were Metalbrand and the cockatrice creature imo.
