Back when I was a child i wanted to marry the Duke of Faber Castell just so I get a lifetime supply of those pencils. I was a weird child but the pencils are still my favourites.
This comment made my day ahahaha
🌸 I still buy them, lol thank you for that past memory 🤗
Lol child me would have thought you a genius
I see absolutely nothing wrong with this life plan 😃
Use the white before laying down colour to preserve highlights, it's not useless!!! 😁
interesting, never tried that before! 😁
also to mix colors, or to lighten some parts. It can also be used with oil based pastels to get some interrsting results
Yep in my color pencil art I would lay down a layer of white or cream color depending on whether I want it warm or cool before I put the other colors down on top of it.
Chris Hong Art sometimes I use the white Poly with a very sharp point to indent whiskers. I saw it done on a video but can’t remember the artist now. Also, if you ever try sanded paper or Pastelmat, it works surprisingly well on that for some applications. It is more translucent than other pencils, though.
For final details, Bonnie Snowdon and Claudia Cooper use a Caran D’ache white Museum Aquarelle pencil, which I do now, too. Or, Brush and Pencil’s Titanium White Powder mixed with Touch Up Texture. In a sketchbook, a white Posca acrylic paint marker works well. Whites are an issue with CP.
That's what I do with the white pencils.. or for blending sometimes
Your use of colors that I would never think possible on skin and hair are just fantastic! Your art is so beautiful 💕
thank you so much! I love using lots of colours together 😍
Kim Harbaugh I know! I noticed that too. It almost makes me feel like I can't mess it up! It gives me courage to use any color I want in moderation.
AmazinGraceXOXO1 and we have plenty of time for experimenting! 😃
@@ChrisHongArt yeah very painterly :D I like it
Wax bloom is actually a whitish grey film that forms overtime when the wax in the material oxidizes and rises to the top, causing the artwork to look cloudy and dull. I've heard about it and had to look it up since I don't really use any wax-based materials and therefore never came across this issue haha ;)
I think intellectually I understood what it was but I've never come across it myself so I wasn't entirely sure 😂
Just rub lightly with a cloth to remove. Or, when I was in Arizona go outside for a few moments to heat and melt the wax lol
@@ChrisHongArt Spraying fixative on a prismacolor artwork will prevent most wax buildup. It'll keep the colors crisp and gives the finished piece a nice shine.
The wax issue isn't really something to worry about, though. It's easy to fix by rubbing a softer fabric over it.
and the metallic colored pencils are not really good when you use them directly, for example you can use blue tones first then use the silver one
I'd have to try that, thanks!
"It's just a sketch" you say as you proceed to make one of the most playful uses of color I've ever seen! I love it so much, very inspiring thank you Chris.
I always thought that Polychromos pencils were very well suited to your style and way of working by incremental layers and little adjustments. Now this video proves it. You're gonna looooove them and use them a lot, I'm sure. Also, don't worry too much if the pencils fall down. The lead in these is bonded to the wood, and it's carefully placed in the center of the pencil body so it's well insulated, and that makes it fairly shock proof. Had mine fall several times and never had a broken tip, or something like that.
Wow just realized this never happened to mine either, they’re so amazing
Omg you really have no idea how much this tutorial changed everything for me! Thank you so much I literally went from not knowing how to color at all to being really happy with the outcome especially for my first try!
I always feel so much better about my “crazy” layering of colors when I watch your videos. I LOVE the glimpses of contrasting colors and the beautiful depth it creates. I only hope I can be as good as you are, someday. You’re such an inspiration to me. Thank you for all you do, and stay safe and healthy.
I love hearing people analyze and break down my work since it gives me a new perspective. Thank you so much for watching and please stay safe as well!
polychromos are definitely more layerable than the wax-based ones and wax-based colored pencils tend to break a lot, like prismacolors you just have to sharpen them all the time which is why the polychromos are better, well choice 🌝
taha tympana looks like i have to get them
maybe if i find a used set
Sui Des you don’t have to buy the 120 set i don’t reccommend the used ones you can buy the 12 set even that would be better
@@tahatympana2247 why wouldn't you recommend a used one?
wax bloom is actually when wax pencils are completely burnished and layered over time, could be months, there will be a cloudy film over the artwork that was burnished, this film can easily be wiped away with your finger or a tissue. I hope this info was helpful. Great video by the way, I love polychromos!
I actually have a 64 set of Polychromos since theyre really easy to get here in Germany! Haven't used them in a looong time tho... This video makes me wanna draw with them again! :)
hope I've convinced you to pick them up again! thanks for watching 🧡
Omg same! (i'm not from Germany and they're not easy to get here 😖)
I wish I had the same color box as yours. It's really not cheap for me to buy right now...😭😭😭
@Lynn are they cheaper in Germany? In america they are like really expensive :(
@@cuteprincesslilmeliz i just bought a 24 pack for like 29€ and i live in germany, how much do they cost in america ?
I've used a 12 set of polychromos and I love them! They last a long time, they are pigmented, on the hard side (unlike Prismacolor premier), the tip almost never breaks...Sadly, I had to return it to the owner :(
Why did yo-
I am sorry what?
@@soumil5794 They were borrowed, the owner let me use it a couple of times so I could decide if I wanted to buy my own set
@@didi7074 oh i get it now
@@didi7074 I have a feeling that the set I recieved might be a fake, the colors don't blend that well, the ares I color in becomes shiny and you can't color over it and the colors don't feel very pigmented. But then again, I don't see any fault in the box anywhere that might prove it fake. I also tried it on 3 different pages. Is it that I am not using the right page?
I love how you jump straight to the blending and things of that nature instead of pointless color swatches. You're an artist-ARTIST lol
I would benefit from swatching more but I'm too impatient to use them most of the time! XD
6:20 girl you're not alone, my middle finger looks EXACTLY the same haha
you're right mines the same, but the ring finger because I hold my pencil weird
i love chris because she reminds me of my art teacher she’s so sweet and supportive
I have a death grip too AND i'm lefty. I completely understand the bump thing on the middle finger.
I love my Polychromos, I would personally say that they are some of the best for realism especially because they have more natural looking colors (which is why you won't find many vibrant and neon-like colors such as with prisma). Also I was in awe of your sketch, I loved the color palette you used! 🧡🧡
I have this set, but they’re so nice I’m always afraid to use them. You’re making me want to go grab them and play!
you know even if you use one up completely they aren't too expensive to restock on their own have fun with your art supplies that honours them a lot more than just sitting in a drawer unused ^^
bruh i wud love to have them just use then dont dissappoint me! i bet u can do amazing things
@@bossbabypaints I pulled them out and used them over the weekend! Amazing results, I love them!
sa m e
@@LiamAmazarashi yes you are completely right!!
I really love using grippy non-adhesive shelf liner to set art supplies on so they don't roll around. It's cushiony and comes in rolls, sold as "non-skid" or "grip" or whatever. It easily rolls up or folds for storage. Great for keeping tablets stands steady or many other uses as well. I know this is extremely belated, but maybe someone will see it and find it useful. Haha.
That’s a great idea!
would love to see you use these to do another "glow-up" of an abandoned piece !
Wax bloom is what is left behind on your layering work after a few hours...kind of a whitish wax film that you then have to lightly brush off.
I got this set because it was 174$ CAN rather than 299$ CAN (still is on Deserres) and it is a charm. In this whole quarantine thing its nice to have something new to be excited about.
That's exactly where I bought mine, and I took advantage of that sale as well! XD Canadians listen up!👀
@@ChrisHongArt I am really tempted to get them because of that sale and I've been looking at them for a week... Still debating whether or not they're worth it... Right not it's 14$more to go from 60 to 120 pencils...
Duntem Draws do it!
Not sure if that comment is relevant, but I just wanted to share my experience ...
I do *hate* coloured pencils. Got a set of Faber Castel Polychromos when I was younger, I used them and hated it every single time ; I couldn't manage to obtain the results I wanted. There always was that grayniness which drove me crazy, the colours weren't as "punchy" as I wanted them to be but more like faded, like ... Every coloured pencil work was becoming a nightmare. So I abandoned them in some drawer, and just got into other mediums. Or used them only for sketching, certainly not colouring. 😆
Though, I'm still interested on what people can do with coloured pencils. Watching that video actually made me realise that I was using them wrong. I'm not layering them enough ...
I was mesmerized while I was watching it. Your job is sooooo colourfull, that is actually what I am looking for ! You gave me the will to try them again, but with a better method. I'm so thankfull you uploaded some real-time process videos (kinda), I finally understand how to use coloured pencils ! Plus we all have the chance to admire your beautifull portraits ! 😀
Thank you so much for sharing ! Amazing job.
Have a nice day. 😊
MY GOD, YOU DO THE HAND THING WITH YOUR PENCILS! I have the same problem holding pencils/markers/pens/etc. and I thought my middle finger was deformed from birth, I never noticed that the curve it makes it's much more pronounced than in my left hand..... learning new things every day
Paper is very important for colored pencils as well. Polychromos on Stonehenge paper will allow you to layer so many layers it’s fuckin amazing. You can make complex skin tones with how many layers you can ahcirve.
I have the same callous on the same finger!!! I must say that I don't grip my pencils as hard as I did now! These are AMAZING! pencils so I'm sure your going to enjoy them & the fact that they have great lightfastness is a bonus!
omg yes! i love watching your portraits!
The same!
Ohhhhhhh I have enjoyed watching you colour with your new set of Pencils Chris!!! You are SO Inspiring xx
Thanks for watching, Mitzi! 😘
It was sheer pleasure to watch you work, wow! The effect! 👏👏👏
Neon colors are not lightfast so artist grade pencils generally don't have them. I use my Prismacolor Premiere (which are better pigmented than scholars), and Polychromos together frequently. You can get rid of wax bloom with a soft cloth or rubbing alcohol. Also polychromos are better for details than wax based pencils. Derwent lughtfast feel to me like a nice middle ground between the two types.
I love your art - the colours - how easy it is for you - you are gifted - so inspiring ! God bless you !
Some individual pencils feel harder or scratchy because of pigment sources and not due to any flaws in the brand.
A good manufacturer would find ways to alter the “recipe” so there is consistency in performance across colors
i've been holding my pencil & pens etc. the way it's often taught, with a light grip, but even that is enough to create a cushion of thick skin on my middle finger. just like you have. when i stopped drawing for 15 years, it completely disappeared, because i spent most of my day typing stuff on the computer. but as soon as started drawing again, and went back to taking notes on paper etc. the cushion came back 🤣
oh, when i went to art highschool in germany in the 90s, we had to get this set of polychromos. i still have them. i've re-bought a few single colours i used up over time, but even over 20 years and several moves across europe later, they still work wonderfully 💕
i hope you enjoy them in the long run!
I love how you use different colours for the shadows
I really wanted to watch this video when it was in my recommendations but then I accidentally refreshed, glad it came up again :3
hehe I'm glad the UA-cam algorithm was in our favour! ;)
you should try watercolor and colored pencils combined on a piece or sketch. It might give you that little more control with watercolor that you've been craving like you said.
Its so nice to see they way your work with color pencils. The colors you chose to be put together always comes out so beautiful and nicely blended 😍💞
OMG I'm so happy I came across your channel it is great to have more artists making simples pieces for half an our here just for fun to watch. It's really relaxing an you're a really good and inspiring artist :)
The wax bloom is like a film that forms on the surface of the drawing and it literally will not except any more color. Prismas do this if you try to do to much layering. Enjoy your new pencils. I have this set and they are beautiful!
So awesome and relaxing to watch. Informative and enjoyable. Ty so much!!! Eagerly awaiting my new pencils...
I LOVE, love the polycromos
I have to say I instantly fell in love with the polychromos vs the scholars. My set is just the 24 ct but I love them so much. One thing about them vs the prismacolors is they are a lot harder to break, the cores are so much stronger. That was one thing I loved about them is they stayed sharper longer, and didn't break all the time. My only issue is where I live I can't get them open stock unless I order online and that is a bit pricey. The only ones I can get open stock here are the prismacolors and a different type of faber castell pencils.
If you use a little odourless spirits like gamsol to blend, just dab your brush in the gamsol, then dab on tissue, then blend your colours. You need 2 or 3 layers down before blending but the result looks like smooth paint.
curious to try one of these days!
Chris Hong Art Cool! If you have a colourless alcohol “blender” lying around, you might get some results with that. If using gamsol, odourless mineral spirits or zest it pencil blend or anything that requires rush application, always use a synthetic brush, and ensure your brush must be barely damp.
They look so buttery! You make me really want to do some watercolour stuff Chris.
Seeing how you work with colors is always amazing!! You really make me wanna give pencil colors another go, love this so much! 💖💖
Was wonderful see how that beautiful sketch evolved to a mor beautiful drawing!!!
Yes, both enjoyed the video and will tune in for the next one! Beautiful drawing as always 💖
new video coming soon! ;)
Your art style is adorable🥺
I’m over here still struggling lol
I like the way you use the pencils! Thank you!! Love the portrait too!! ❤️❤️
Prismacolor premier has some nice neon colored pencils, a neon pink is available it’s literally called neon pink, it’s very nice and has good lay down and you can find it as a single pencil through Blick art supplies or other art stores.
I’ve wanted these pencils for a year now and have yet to buy them. Hopefully I can get them in June. But I love watching people use them :)
I learn a lot from each and every video you make, thank you!😌✨🌷
I really love how you use your colors
I know this is kinda random, but I seriously strive to be as great artist as you, ur amazing :)))
I'm so glad I'm not the only artist with the pencil bump/crookedness on their middle finger
Can't wait to see you use them with your watercolor paints. That's how I use mine and love the effects.
won't be long! ;)
Faber-Castell Polychromos “ amazing product “
bruh I watched this entire video without realizing it was 40 mins long wtf
Love these long videos :)
good, more are on their way! 😘
Longest first impression video ever and I love it ❤️
This just inspires me to try out color pencils
i love these pencils, ive had them for almost a year. and it really does help with ur death grip because if u have one it leaves streak lines if u dont use a light hand and harder kind of to blend but can in a certain way. but i have the pain your talking about...i just found out what mine was after 6 years...mild carpel tunnel...and a cyst on my wrist that makes it more swollen (its my right hand so sucks even more. havent been able to color a lot especially lately at least not all day long without breaks. but i have that pain and know exactly what ur talking about so i feel u
These pencils have been a game changer for me!
thank you. I want to buy them after this video. I actally have greens colors of polycromos, about 5 to draw plants on my garden that I never had use. I am going to try. Great video and thr art is gorgeous.
Your illustrations are so utterly charming❣️🥰 I love the way you layer colour.
Bright pink is the Holy Grail of art supplies. There isn’t a lightfast pigment to make it yet. I wonder if something synthetic to mimic opera rose will ever be invented. Two of the Polychromos are not very lightfast - purply pink tones, of course. There are some gorgeous pinks in the Caran D’Ache Pablo line (my favourite pencils) but they aren’t lightfast, sadly. Fun for a sketchbook, though.
I figured that might be the reason! That's unfortunate, but yes I don't think it will stop me from using truly bright pinks, at least for sketches like these! :)
Chris Hong Art yes! For fun, and for your sketchbook, and for teaching. Also, for making prints, where lightfastness isn’t an issue. Perfect for you.
Watercolorists have the same issue. Opera Rose (or Opera Pink) is an irresistible colour but it goes dingy and ugly over time. I did an Anna Mason rose tutorial in which she uses Opera Rose watercolour, but I keep my rose in a portfolio in the dark.

I personally actually really like the white. I feel like it works really well compared to other colour pencils that I've used
Oh god, I loved every second of this, amazing work
happy to hear that! 🧡
I have these, some wonderful blues and neutrals. I too noticed the lack of a bright, true pink. It’s always hard to get good pinks, imo. I prefer using the cream instead of the white to blend. It’s a bit softer, and nice warm tone. I love your use of colour, and soft blends.
I also love the creams as well, and light pastels for blending/layering! Which this set also lacks unfortunately! I'll probably look for those in the prismacolours :)
15:08 lamo I always use an eraser or something as a "stopper" of sorts. Like I keep a handful of the colors I'm currently using next to me and keep the rest of the colors I'm not using in a cup and switch cycle through them when I'm drawing to keep my area -less- messy.
The eraser has grip and weight to it so it can stop my pencils from rolling over.
So beautiful, Chris!
Awesome drawing demo. Is there any tutorial video from you that shows tracing outlines before coloring them?
i just started following you and watched a few videos. i love your art work. i was recently inspired to start my own channel, the coloring community is so nice and supportive also. i bought the polys also and love them
thanks for stopping by, Carolyn!
You’re welcome 😉
I love your use of color! I'm thinking about getting a set of professional colored pencils, and you've sold me on the polychromos.
I feel like the reason people dislike the white polychromos is because of the way you blend with the white in the Prisma colours. You definitely can blend with lighter colours, and probably white, but it’s not just some default blender like with prisma colour. For example I find when doing light skin tones I use a lot of reds and pinks, then go over things with the ‘light flesh’ colour which tends to blend everything together and minimise the texture, also allowing me to blend things more naturally into the white of the paper. I think the thing is that whichever colour you choose to blend with will show up to some degree and add to the overall colour, and as such white is not the best choice for this as it just dulls the colour, in comparison to using a similar, but lighter colour, which will add, rather than detract to a colour.
Well said, I also prefer to layer with a lighter colour as opposed to a stark white!
the best artist out there. thank you for this hour review❤️ i'm having a really bad mood and watching your demos calm me down. lots of love! been following your class in skillshare as well
aw I'm glad the video has been helping! I have more in-store real soon! 😘
@@ChrisHongArt ofc🤗✨ i hope you're staying safe amidst the chaos. sending my love from Philippines💕💖
Awesome drawing i love faber-castell Polychromos is best what i did drawing it keep going brilliant work 😍😄👍
I used to have a huge bump on my middle finger, but when i got into uni i completely stopped doing any sort of art or writing in general, everything was digital and my bump when down nearly completely. However, I'm trying get into art again so no doubt it'll come back again 😂.
Even with digital my grip is terrible T0T but thankfully when I'm PAINTING I don't do the death grip!
I would love a video on how you choose colors!
You can blend the polychromos with oil actually, I love these pencils and since I live in germany they aren't too expensive here.
I have the 60 set, it is lovely❤️ the white pen is one of my most used
beautiful.. I love watching you color.
Will you do a sketchbook tour? Would be really interesting to see your sketches and exercises 😊
I'm actually due for one pretty soon! A few more pages left in my current one XD
I've been using Prismacolour Premier for years, but my local artist shop doesn't stock Prismacolour so I snatched up three earth toned Polychromos. I have to admit, I quite like them and they layer beautifully. I am used to a softer pencil though so it's been a learning experience XD
really curious to see how soft the premier ones are now! one day.. :)
Just saw the thumbnail on the side and went "Woooah! Why're you doing such cool stuff!?" ... and clicked on the video right away. xD No. Honestly. This is so beautiful! ♥
If you run out of stuff to talk about while filming I'd always love to hear about why you're doing whatever you're doing at the time. IE why you picked up a certain color to work with, why you are hardening an edge here or darkening an area there. It takes some practice to articulate to others what you're just doing what comes naturally, but it'd be really helpful to hear about your thought process while making design decisions!
it's definitely tough to try and articulate all the decision making that happens in action! But I'm working on it! ^^
I wish I could get a set like this but I will have to save up for a while
(Also I love your work 💖)
I live how you use colors here, and it's nice to see it in real time with commentary. I love this style, but whenever I try it I just feel lost... You make me wanna pick up pencils again
Dear Chris, you don't have to be too afraid, if the pencils fall down. The leads are glued completley, so they won't break easily (hope i explained that understandable). I think it should be somewhere in the discription as well :)
Really amazing work... I too like drawing and sometimes does a couple of them... Thank you for more techniques... Wishing you all success
I have the smaller verson of this set (24 Pencils) I got it when I was in college. I haven't used them in years tho. Im glad you did a video on the I always wanted to see how youd react to using color pencils.
Mine are not here yet but I'll get it tomorrow mine is 36 colours set I'm really excited
Hi I thought that I would throw my 2 cents in. I have both Polychromos and Prismacolor. I find that Polychromos, you have to do more layers to get the same effect as Prisma. When the Prismacolor won't take any more colour I add Zest It blender (liquid) with a cardboard stump, this not only allows you to add more colour, but also it blends your colours beautifully. Hope this helps.
I'm still really curious to try the prismacolours as well! :)
@@ChrisHongArt I hope you do get to try them, they're definitely mt favourite
I have the exact same set! My favorite colors are dark flesh and light ultramarine haha ♡
oo I wonder if I've used them yet, not familiar with their names yet hehe
I've owned my 120 set of polychromos for over a year now and I've been hesitant on using them because I still need to get used to them..
Watching your vid is motivating me to use them soon ^^
Use a jar for your pencils you want to use at the moment . Pickle or spaghetti sauce jars are a great way to recycle and will leave you a lot more room . Thanks for the review . Kind are going to be delivered today ! Can't wait to start playing with them !
*mine not kind stupid spell check !

I am a new subscriber but once I saw your art I fell in love with your use of colors.👍👍. You are so good at drawing. Thank you for inspiring me. 😃😃
thanks for stopping by, hope you'll enjoy part 2 as well!
Death grip on the pencil is the single most relatable thing I have heard on art UA-cam 😂😂😂😂 the hulk could not pry the pencil from my hand
just got the 24 set of these polychromos a few months ago, i really enjoy them alot. regarding the ones that feel 'woody' when coloured with I found that a quick sharpening makes them feel better, i wonder if a substance occurs on some of the tips during manufacturing...
I didn't notice the third later of my new colored pencil case either!
