  • Thanks for checking out our Whitechapel reaction. This was a very interesting song but we couldn't quite pin it down. When A Demon Defiles a Witch could have so many meanings. When we looked up the lyrics, we still couldn't quite pin it down. Help us out in the comments please!

The song is about Phil’s, the vocalist, mother. His mother suffered from Schizophrenia, drug addiction, and alcoholism. She died when he was a teenager.
She would see a demon outside and she knew that if she saw it there, then it would be by her bedside that night. She would write cryptic journals and her handwriting would change. The song title came from one of the journals.

This song is about the lead singers (Phil Bozeman) mom. She had many mental illnesses, like schizophrenia, drug abuse, many multiple personalities, etc. It's also based off her journal, where she would write about a demon she would see by her fireside. The band reported that in the journal is said, if she saw the demon, it would then be by her bed, hence the lyrics: "The demons dance by the fireside
. But tonight they migrate to my bedside." It was also said that her handwriting would change constantly. The demon itself was named "Mycar" and would essentially r*pe her while using the physical appearance of Bozeman's father (or stepfather, its one of the two). This song and the album as a whole are both incredibly emotional and go through things that Bozeman has experienced.

You really need to scope out Whitechapel "Hickory Creek". AMAZING. And yes this song is about his mother. She suffered schizophrenia. Hickory Creek also speaks on her, but is far more palatable off the jump. These lyrics are almost straight out of the singer's mother's journal. She literally believed she was a witch fighting against the powers of evil.

You weren't very far off at all. He IS speaking from his mother's perspective. The lyrics were taken from writings in her journal. She was schizophrenic and addicted to drugs and alcohol. These were the things she would write about, seeing a demon and whatnot. Very cryptic. I believe she died when Phil, the vocalist, was only 15.

She was also diagnosed with 34 different personalities. She would see the demon often and named him Mycar in her journal and he would attack her in her bed which is where the song title comes from. She did die from an overdose in 2000 or 2001, just met the wrong person that got her hooked on drugs.

I'm impressed with how you guys picked up on the meaning of the song without any research into it. Whitechapel has some of the most honest and vulnerable songs about loss, addiction, depression etc. "Bring Me Home" is another great one about the loss of Phil's father, and "Hickory Creek" is about losing both his parents at a very young age, and his path to getting closure from that. Great writing, clear vocals, and his clean vocals are a nice treat to hear from time to time.

I'd have two suggestions, one to go heavier and one lighter : for the lighter one, you should ear Julie Christmas. She's freaking amazing vocally. IMO the best video to see that is "Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas - Mariner - Live at De Kreun" with timecode 17,25, to see the song "The Wreck of S.S. Needle" live. By freaking far my #1 female singer for creativity, passion and psycho delivering. That's really a hidden gem.
For the heavier one, go with Frontierer - Molten Larva. Not so growly, but hell... heavy.
Oh, and bonus : for lyrics : Counterparts - Solace. The feelings are strongs with this one.

so as everyone has said, the song is truly about his moms addiction and schizophrenia, combined with his step dad enabling her basically( hes the creepy demon guy in the video ) . But I really love yalls interpretations of the lyrics. I personally think all writing should be into interpretation to the reader no mater what the writer had in mind. that is what is so beautiful about writing... so many different people can interpret it so differemtly and make in to their own story. or whatever is bugging them at the moment... that is what truly makes a writer I think.. letting your words describe the raeder vs the writer...

The singers mother claimed that a demon raped a witch but he did not want the word rape in the title of the song so that's where when a demon defiles a witch came from

The singers mother battled a personal demon named mykar that took the form of his father that raped her in her dreams. She had 34 documented personalities where even the handwriting would change with each one.

Something Different. Please consider FIRST TIME HEARING Joey & Rory "When I'm Gone" Very
powerful. Sadly, the message in this song came true for these two years
later after recording. (tissue alert) 27 million views. Wonderful
message. I hope you appreciate and enjoy. Thank you in advance.

Here's one advice: Please focus on the video first, then analysis the lyrics after that or pause it. U guys literally watched both of it at the same time. We want to see your reaction & first impression of the video.

The confusion between schizophrenia and DID is a little frustrating. Schizophrenia is where you usually hear things that aren’t there and in usually rare cases see things. Dissociative identity disorder or what used to be called multiple personality disorder is totally different. You have different personalities that all reside within the same person and they generally are not aware of each other but they will have even different hand writing.

When I hear songs like thing.. With comments such as "Metal can't do Pop".. like fuck right off.. If metal wanted to do Pop it can, but it chooses not too. Elements of pop can work in any genre.. But metal choose when and where to use it.

Lmao I think you’d be better off easing yourselves into the really heavy shit instead of jumping straight in after a couple of Slipknot songs. There’s a lot of good metalcore to try while you figure out your metal tastes. Total side note but Imminence has a newer single “temptation” that I think you guys would enjoy
