    Arianne is like a person playing an RPG but doesn't care about the details and side missions, and just wants to finish the main quest line.

    I know its not very dramatic, but maybe sending daemon sand along was a way to humble Arianne and have her shift to using her brain instead of her knockers to control people
    Its subtle like we could expect from a man like doran

      Woah a fantastic observation about the culture and psychology at play in asoiaf and no easily triggered people freaking out that you stated your opinion? What a shocker! I had a similar idea, especially the tension in the second chapter w daemon doing everything in his power to dissuade (or potentially “push”) her towards meeting aegon

  • @childofpersia1213
    @childofpersia1213 7 років тому +48

    Maybe Doran put Daemon Sand on Arianna's mission to get her to start thinking about how she can win when she can't use her #1 weapon: her sexuality. Daemon is someone Arianna thinks she can seduce but she can't. Doran ensures this by picking a previous lover she's scorned

    Great video Preston, the only issue I take is that feudalism doesn't always mean one child inherits everything. In fact, usually the titles would be distributed among children, and its part of the reason feudalism is so messy. The advent of more absolutist policies in the late medieval age and into the early modern period made 'one child, all titles' much more important but it definitely wasn't the norm for most of history.

    • @David-qm2qj

      Very depending on circumstances, culture, power of a potential heir vs other claimants and centralisation.
      France e.g. Basicly stopped gavelkind in high middle ages while many german states didnt. but powerfull houses were able to hold everything together like habsburg, hohenzoller, rurikowich.

    • @scottalexander3109
      @scottalexander3109 7 років тому +9

      Even the habsburgs had a lot of trouble with it - the Treaty of Neuberg caused quite a few issues for the Habsburgs. The Hohenzollerns had a load of trouble with succession too., the Prussian branch stuck together pretty well but only once firmly in the early-modern period when succession was less messy.

      Eastern Europe had a lot of fratricide because they practiced fraternal inheritance (don't know what the proper name is) so the surviving son and oldest brother would try to maim each other to make each other unfit to rul... and Macbeth, was the last King of Scotland elected in the traditional anglo saxon way (again I don't know what the proper name is.) and we know how that turned out.

    Do you think Ned really knew Lyanna? Ned was fostered during the same age range as Quentin - and Arianna uses this fostering as an explanation for why she doesn't know her brother. Do most noble family members not know each other due to fostering?

    Considering it is Daemon who brings up the dragon banner of House Tolland, leading to the reference to the books that could contain information about defeating dragons, is that another hint that Daemon is really more involved in Doren's plan than Arriane? Like you suggested with Quinten and Drink, it seems Arrianne is being taken on a ride with others in control of the reigns.

    • @jasonblanchette1103
      @jasonblanchette1103 7 років тому +9

      And the big problem with both the Quinten quest and the Arianne mission is how much more did Doren love his sister over his own children? If all the Martels really are so super cold hearted why all the love for the dead Sister/Aunt?

    3:09 "Absolutely no reason to think that Teora Toland has any Targaryen or Valyrian blood in her"?? Are you serious? Their sigil itself is a dragon!! And Dorne is - perhaps ironically or strangely - the kingdom/region with the most marriages to House Targaryen throughout the centuries, so yeah, they could totally have blood of the dragon, either directly from House Targaryen or via House Dayne or House Martell or something like that. (Or otherwise they may have some ancient strange connection to dragons and the Valyrians or the Great Empire of the Dawn, just like House Dayne and House Hightower seems to have.)

    In the 2nd Arianne sample chapter we learn that Aegon had captured Storms End. And we know Stannis sent one of his knights to secure sale swords notably the Golden Company. All that being said do you think the Golden Company will use that and pretend to be there to relive Storms End and then sack it when the gates are opened? I can't see another way that doesn't cost Aegon half his men. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    • @Brandonhayhew
      @Brandonhayhew 7 років тому +2

      Holypikemanz What's the point in having dorne waiting for revenge this long to take on the lannister, why didn't doran do more than just send his son on a long journey mission, why didn't he ally with varys or littlefinger, or hire more spies and freerider to create anarchy to the westeros to give away for Dany or anarchy for independence?

    • @Holypikemanz
      @Holypikemanz 7 років тому +8

      Waiting is super hard FOR YOU, but in reality, people do not rush into treason against the throne or as crazy as Theon's dad to just declare war without having other alliances. Your impatience is not Doran's. impulse control, plotting. Its good stuff. And if you watch Preston's other videos, Doran has been hiring mercs to create chaos.

    • @nononono3421

      Like Roose said, boy lords are the bane of any house. Doran wants Quentyn and Arianne and the Sand Snakes gone, and has used them to strenghten the honesty of his offer of Trystane to King's Landing, the third in line of succession. How can anyone doubt Doran's honesty, when the two other heirs seemingly betrayed him by trying to marry with Daenerys and Aegon at the same time? And the Sand Snakes' actions? Surely directed by the spiteful Ellaria. Doran is checkmating all opposition to Trystane by using their selfish desires to get them off the board. In the end, Doran cares about "the children of the water gardens", not his own blood. He had to get the venom out of his House. Doran wants peace, and no one would have accepted a peace that implied marrying into the Lannister house, unless there was no option left.

Its made to be relatable to Forever alone guys. And probably to guys who on their wedding say they dont understand why their wife wants to be with them.

    About Dorne I wonder: the water shortage may be solved by the winter. We can expect rain and snow that will replenish the wells. One of the greatest dornish problems may be soon solved. Meanwhile being south, it won't be too cold.

    • @JPISME91
      @JPISME91 7 років тому +9

      Peppe Mercury I wonder if more people moving south to avoid winter would offset the extra water.

      Immigration won't be easy or even feasible with 2 armies on the way to Dorne. Even so we may see climate change refugees from the north in the other regions

    • @Brandonhayhew
      @Brandonhayhew 7 років тому +1

      Northern moving to the south will be impossible do to the neck, they must get to the greywater watch that's the least they can do. or the mountains of flint or white harbor, the western may go to Casterly of rock and lannisport, many region may try to flee to the reach, dorne may try to hide some people.

    • @deliciousdishes4531
      @deliciousdishes4531 7 років тому +1

      is there evidence, that the climate actually works like that in Dorne? Usually the warm places don't really have summer/winter, but dry and rain season. And Winter is the dry season if I recall correctly.

    • @pyryharakka7748
      @pyryharakka7748 7 років тому +1

      Dorne has dry climate and gets barely any rain. Why should there be lots of snow? Different areas get vastly different amounts of snow depending on the dryness of the climate and not mainly by how cold it is.

    You missed a golden opportunity to call Dornish Danaerys "Dornaerys"...or "Dorny" :D

  • @ganykaliya7811
    @ganykaliya7811 7 років тому +18

    I see a big problem with Doran Martell and that is his memory of history is selective. Sure he remembers the ruins of the Rhoynish cities alright, that I'm not denying. When the Valyrian Freehold expanded into Essos the Rhoynar opposed them and in the beginning quite successfully but eventually the Valyrians overwhelmed them and Nymeria's 10,000 ships happened. Next, we have the Targaryen-Dornish wars. The first time Aegon and his dragons were defeated by guerrilla warfare. But then we had Daeron the Young Dragon who simply by learning from Aegon's (and without dragons) ruled Dorne for 4 years (though Martin would go out of his way to minimize this accomplishment). After the Dornish regained independence, they bent the knee through marriage. And contrary to Doran's beliefs the Dornish are bent, broken and bowed the only thing that separated them from the other Lords-Paramount was that they were called Princes and had Dornish law (although until Jaehaerys I, all the Kingdoms kept their own laws). All Daeron II did was allow the Dornish to save face. After all the Yronwoods call themselves the Bloodroyal even though they are no long Kings anymore. Another thing Doran forgets is that the Dorne that did withstand the Targaryens was a united Dorne (including the Stony Dornish) but Doran wants Rhoynish restoration and is deliberately sabotaging the Stony Dornish. I think that the pattern will repeat itself a third time in the Valyrian Restoration Movement-Rhoynish Restoration Movement Cold War. That's another thing to remember Doran and Illyrio are essentially having a Cold War, which as a hippie martin hates.

    "No reason to believe Teora Toland has any Targaryen or Valyrian blood in her" then bringing up Shireen.
    Starting with the more obvious one, Shireen literally does have Targaryen blood: she's the daughter of Stannis, a son of Steffon, the son of Ormond Baratheon and RHAELLE TARGARYEN.
    As for Teora, all we know about the marriage of Maron Martell and Daenerys Targaryen was that they had children. We don't know whether they had daughters or not. Even if they didn't, it would be perfectly reasonable for some unknown Martell woman between them and Doran's mother to wed a Toland.
    The only complication is Bran, who has a powerful lineage on both sides (Tullys are likely First Men, not to mention his Whent grandmother as I believe your theory on that) in his own right, and need not be counted.

If I was Doran I would be sending obstacles, distractions and hardships for her Way to train her, Doran gave her the Party that would trouble her most, I have always felt he wants her to Bring about the tactical warrior queen's Whose leadership saved the Rhoynish culture

    Gosh I thought at 16:49 that the Daenerys pointed there is the present Dany and I immediately thought about the theory of Dany's past with lemon tree and Haouse Dalt which connects to Dorne, but then the last sentences got me wrong. Though I wonder if Dany ever sets foot to Dorne and somehow reminds her of the red door or the lemon tree and got her confused with her past. If then, Quaithe's words regarding going north she must go south and to go forth she must go back would be correct.

    Preston, how would news of Quentyn's Death in Slaver bay real or fake possible effect Arianne's plan and Dorne overall? News of his "death" by dragon fire would likely travel fast or even news of Dany's marriage to someone else. If Arianne thinks Dany isn't coming or that the marriage plans have failed could that cause her to do something rash say marrying Aegon?

I kind of doubt George would have all this figured/planned out, especially considering how long it takes him to write. No offence either but I don't even really quite understand why everyone is so interested in anything Dorne related. I just feels like it's never going to amount to anything and this build up for some super dope, super awesome master plan is getting so hyped that it's almost overshadowing the main story. If Teora is leeched to treat having dragon dreams, could Roose Bolton be using leeches for a similar reason? Maybe he's suppressing green dreams? It could support the theory that Ramsey gets green dreams as well, if Ramsey really is Roose's son.

    I think men use their sexuality or appearance for power quite a bit in the series as well. Littlefinger used that appendage to take advantage of Lysa. I think Renly knew that Brienne had feelings for him and he used that to make her a sworn sword. Dario loves using his sexuality to endear himself to Danny ,rubbing the women on his sword hilts felt quite suggestive.
    And of course Pod is the greatest sexual being ever made.
    I also love it when any of the characters who use their sexuality or beauty as a crutch have their good looks taken away from them. It forces them to depend on their other traits as a means of achieving their goals

      The Pod comment was just a jab at the TV show, I'm pretty sure Pod is a virgin in the books

    Idk if i would call the dream teora had a dragon dream in the same way dany and tyrion have them.
    Teora dreamed of dragons dancing- this could just be a metaphor for dany and faegon fighting a targ civil war.
    Dany and Tyrion dream of riding and becoming dragons, or having dragon like characteristics.
    Idk, seems like a small but significant distinction and to me reads as the author trying to lay false trails so to speak.

    I think you look at things too often from a modern perspective, it is not weird that Daemon believes firmly in the death of Aegon; most everything that people know in Westeros is by hearsay. If anything, NOT believing that Aegon is dead would be considered weird.

    Doran wants Quentyn, Arianne, and the Sand Snakes all dead, and blame it all on them being angry at his plan to marry the lowest heir, Trystane, to Myrcella. It's his way of rooting out the venom from his House, and to demonstrate how honest his proposal is to King's Landing. Who could doubt his honesty, if his two other heirs and Oberyn's children all died seemingly trying to opposite it? All will be blamed on Ellaria. Any attempt to unite with Daenerys is as such checkmated, and no differently with Aegon. Dorne has to support his plan, or fall into chaos. Doran cares for the children of Dorne as a whole, represented by the water garden's children, not his own blood. He wants peace.

    Teora could very well be a descendant of the Dornish Danaeris. Not that I genuinely believe blood has any real merit in the story, but it's a possibility nonetheless.

    Maybe Doran just sent a cross section of Dorne in his choice of the company. And a company made up of healthy skeptics to judge with sober eyes Aegon and his chances And it sounds like Arianne just doesn't like the thought of Quinten out ranking her. She's busy counted QM's money instead of her own and getting jealous.
