    I used this method (grease on the suction cups) with a $15 Rain-X DIY chip repair kit and successfully filled an 8-inch crack in my windshield! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 Thanks for the awesome video!

    • @meskobe
      @meskobe 2 місяці тому +1

      @vpnvpn4705 No, it's on the outside and there's a layer between the inside and outside glass. You can look up more details about how windshields are constructed, but you're filling a crack that's only on the outside layer.

      Nice to eat It worked, I was gonna try it as well ! Do you use the seringue to push the resin in or to suck the air out ?
      Thanks !

    • @meskobe
      @meskobe Місяць тому

      The Rain-X kit uses suction cups and a tiny hole at the bottom of the reservoir pressured against the glass, which pushes the resin in and displaces air/vacuum out. The grease on the suction cups like this video shows allows you to move the whole apparatus and fill a crack instead of just a bullseye/chip.

    I knew that it could be done, but I was a bit of a skeptic with that long of a crack. That’s quite impressive. The only problem I’m having is that I can’t find a shop that will do it. All the shops I’ve contacted only want to replace which could be different then my JDM windshield.

    This came out pretty good, i would consider doing this on nostalgia cars or totally cars with no spare parts. I work in the autoglass business, but no insurance company will cover any repairs larger than an inch or two. Crack, def no no. To pay us the actual fee for doing this work above, would end up beeing what the deductable for an entire windshield swap would be. Thats true in Sweden / Norway anyway.

    hey man I had a drink one day while I was repairing a windshield & I ended up drilling through the windshield through the driver's seat and through the floor pan in to the car park asphalt into the earth out the other end and I ended up in downtown China!
    There's a whole new meaning to a crack expander over there!
    I ended up with a black eye which has nothing to do with your brown eye!

    FYI...The reason most glass companies won't repair cracks longer than 6" is because (or should be) because it is a structural issue. The windshields are part of the structure of your crash rating and must be full or as close to full strength as possible to protect you in an accident. So yeah, you can cosmetically improve the looks (somewhat) with this method, but it is still damaged. To each his own...be safe!

    The reason why they where to replace the windshield is because, (I am a tech) after the crack is longer then a 6 inches (a bill note or dollar), the is a safety issue with repairing the windshield. the Resin after it cures becomes harder than glass. windshields are made to break a certain way, to much resin will alter this, and could honestly be a huge safety hazard.

      @@e.nicholelewis1561 Emily, it depends on the tech. I'm in Wichita Ks, I'm a player @ $75. Crack repair can be very smart. It all depends on where, how old, and so forth. The dollar bill rule is an invention of Safelite Auto Glass. I think it's funny that they use a dollar bill as the metric. Because really that's what it's all about the dollar bill they want to sell you a new windshield all the time and always. Search out a good windshield repair service in your area. ROLAGS is the standard (ANSI). Good luck dear.

    • @JJ_hehehehehe
      @JJ_hehehehehe 4 роки тому +1

      You are right. Best repairs are done with a vacuum (on rock damages which are your stars, bullseyes etc.) but that crack is so wide open there was no reason to use all that equipment. The resin and Mylar capping plastic would’ve done the job. When the crack is open enough to feel with a nail (as that one was) you could drop anything in there and it’d fill almost immediately.

Question arises: if the windshield cracked as a result of something hitting it from the inside (a ceramic mug), does the repair have to be done from the inside, or is it assumed that the cracks have gone through and through and you can just repair it from the outside?

I assume if there was not this problem the kit would work fine.

      It's like the twin towers....it's designed to crumble with a certain level of stress (not explode)....I doubt controlled drilling would cause the whole windshield to break...This is referred to as safety glass as the crumbled pieces don't have sharp edges and won't cut you...It's assistance in structural integrity is insignificant IMO, it's prioritized use is related to safety in preventing cuts. It's the same glass required in every school windows here in NY.
      Also in my experience when I was drilling using the wrong bit, it extended the crack more as I had to put more a lot more pressure on the windshield for the bit to penetrate the glass but when using the correct carbide tip drill bit, it drilled with no issues and barely needing to put any pressure on the windshield. But neither methods have ever caused the whole windshield to break.

      @@cesarmendoza8632 If you've ever tried to cut it, it literally does kind of explode. When I was a young lad, I tried to cut an old shower door with a glass cutter, cause I needed a smaller piece from it. Didn't know it was tempered glass (cause when I was young, I didn't know anything, lol). Needless to say, once it gave, it sounded like a gunshot and pieces went flying everywhere, including up the stairs and in directions I never thought it would go. Kind of like an explosion.
      I get what you mean, it doesn't "literally" explode, but you'd swear it did, hehehehe. Same happened when I dropped a tempered glass bowl on a hard kitchen floor. I was still finding pebbles of glass under the fridge etc. clear across the kitchen months later and I thought I had swept it up really well. It definitely likes to break "in an explosive fashion" compared other glass and ceramic.

    Just so y’all know the insurance will pay for a new windshield if you have a crack in the view of the driver and 3 to 500 to be safe instead of trying to repair (which is never guaranteed) and end up replacing and Insurance won’t pay for tampering

  • @wps2612
    @wps2612 9 років тому +2

    A little advice coming from someone who's been in the auto glass industry for over 20 years now. If you pay your insurance company around 5 to 10 dollars a month extra for glass coverage or you live in a state where if you carry comprehensive then your deductible is waived,why repair something when it can be replaced. Filling the crack in doesn't change the fact that there's still a crack in your windshield. It's just filled with a clear resin.Like if you have a pimple on your face why cover it up with makeup if there was a product that will remove it.The structural integrity of your windshield is. compromised the second the crack spreads from its initial impact point. The only benefit of a chip or crack repair is for someone to save money that doesn't carry the proper insurance. For example it doesn't make sense to carry comprehensive or collision because your driving a rust bucket so a windshield replacement wouldn't be covered so in the scenario it would be beneficial but i see too often people driving a brand new car, they have a crack "repaired" and say wow i can't even see it what a great job. Then they drive around not realizing that it's still just as cracked as it was before it was repaired. The integrity or your glass is being held together by a UV cured resin. I'm sure the engineers at BMW didn't have that in mind when coming up with schematics for the original windshield of your car. The glass works as a structural piece the works with a A and B pillars of your vehicle to hold up the roof during a roll over or collision. It just doesn't make sense to half ass something when it can be done right for the same price.......FREE.

      the bullseye is for the resin to penetrate inside the crack. technically Glasses have three layers the middle layer is plastic which is the one that's cracked.

    • @wldnsctt1
      @wldnsctt1 3 роки тому

      The outside layer of glass is the one that’s cracked. The middle layer is vinyl and does not crack.

      Since the next good hit would result in an additional crack and a lost windshield according to your logic, you've at least saved the cost of *one* windshield by having this done. Whether it is worth your money to buy the kit if it is indeed that expensive would depend on the frequency of cracked windshields that happen to you. For some people, it *might* be worth it. The price you quote is a lot more than I'm willing to spend on the possibility that *I* would do it right and get enough cracks to justify the cost, even though I got my first crack on my new Jeep Wrangler JL in only 2050 miles. :(
