    Let me say that I may do another review on this to update my stance, it’s been performing better since I did this review. Like this if you would like an official update video

      I would recommend not jumping so quickly between images when discussing. I found it distracting and it felt rushed. This is not the usual comment snark, but an honest opinion. :-)

    I've been using Gary Fong diffuser for years on events and I didn't have any issues like you did. Most of the time I bounced it off the ceiling and I get nice exposed photos. No vignetting or darker on the bottom part of the image. You may want to explore more how to use the gear.

      Ches Calambas after having more experience with it I agree it's a useful tool. Focal length matters though. I use it for all my events. I may do an update review with my new thoughts on it. Thanks for watching!

      Do U guys use it as Gary says in canon speak? p mode? With iso set at 800 ... it always looked good with people on a 16-36 wide angle.....with tv mode it looks like poop

    I really like how you use the pictures how they actually come rather than editing and then comparing them which some other channels do which is so annoying. Thank you

    I looked at this and the magsphere and ended up going with the magsphere. I’ve been happy so far with it. Even still I get more harsh light on the face than I’d like. However as you know, for weddings you have to be quick and go with the best tool you’ve got. When bounce flash isn’t an easy option these can work well, but there is a learning curve.
    I’m starting to learn how to maximize quality. When using it, I prefer manual flash and trying to maintain consistent distances, which is ideal with manual flash anyway. This is even easier since I use primes mainly at weddings. I seem to get more consistent quality this way.

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  5 років тому +1

      Matthew Zamarron I agree there is def a learning curve. I use mostly primes as well and I’m learning that at the right distance these work well but go too close and it does more damage than good. I bounce back and forth between ttl and manual depending on the situation. When you can’t bounce these def help out, I hear the mag mod is actually pretty heavy so that’s why opted for this. Some weddings I’ve gotten clean results others the flash was a little too hot on the subjects in my opinion.

      Jason Osborne you are right. Closer does seem to always be harder.

    I like your review bro, i feel the same way.... Ut does soften the light and spreads it evenly BUT.... It casts shadows behind the subject and thats not desirable. Big ups to your review it is very informative.

    I don't think you did a proper review of this product. I admire and respect the fact that you would put yourself out here. Might I suggest you go to Gary Fong's channel and learn how to use it in order to offer a worthwhile evaluation? Much success to you and your channel.

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  5 років тому

      James Spice Williams do you have any tips on how it is supposed to be used? I have been using it for a month and some change and have been to his site for general tips and advice. Thanks for your feed back but not sure how it wasn’t proper. Thanks

    • @jamesspicewilliams8835

      Speedlight to the subject distance relative to ceiling height was not mentioned in your video. That would explain the falloff. I notice the distortion on the face of your subject which leads me to believe you used a wide angle lens. This could have caused you to move in too close to the subject to bounce the light properly. I would suggest you redo your evaluation with a 50mm lens in a room with no more than a 15-foot white ceiling. Gary Fong has a silver accessory to help with higher ceilings. Your subject was too close to the wall to avoid shadows. I would suggest using the modifier with off camera speed-light and in close to your subject to deal with that issue. Observe the marketing piece for the modifier. The image without to modifier has more depth of field and less ambient light. The image with the modifier was taken with a wider aperture and higher iso. This adjustment offered three benefits. First, It balanced the light level of the soft light coming through the modifier with the ambient light. Secondly, the depth of field enhanced the subject to scene separation. Third, it increases the efficiency of the speed-light. Hopefully, these tips will improve your experience with the light modifier. They have enhanced mine through the evolution of his product over the years. Wish you well Kind Sir.

    If the Gary fong is not good which one would you recommend for

      My thoughts on the Gary fong have changed, it works pretty well once you know how to use it and with the right lens. I use it mostly pointed up at the ceiling with the cap off so that it spreads light across the shot. I still would not use it pointed at my subjects

    I personally didn't like it and clients I've shot said the flash is too bright. Compared to not having anything on the flash, I will admit, it does blow up the light into the sphere obviously so it will appear much brighter in that sense. It was just too blinding. I had to return it.

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  5 років тому

      suzanx it took me a while to get used to it, it also performs differently depending on the lenses used with it. I will say that I’ve gotten great results with it using a 50 and 85mm lens 24mm is ok. The one problem I still have is the way the flash comes out while shooting in portrait mode, sometimes it can leave odd shadows. I typically have to move the flash head forward or backward to get a optimal result. It’s def hit or miss but i use it for all my events, and in areas that I can’t bounce effectively it def saves shots!

    Jason, like your honesty and what you have to say. However I feel you need to do more prep before shooting your video.It would be more beneficial to the viewer if you could instantly show the pictures you are comparing rather waiting as you search for the picture. Other than that nice work!

    The few places it will work, it isn't needed, just point your speedlight to the direction you want the light to come from and bounce it, wall or ceiling not white? Just use a CTO.

      Exhibit G Photo and Video probably but considering how strong the ad is compared to normal speed light I’m not sure how much diffusion would get but I’m sure it would soften it a bit if you had the top cap on inverted

    You almost seem confused on which photos belong to which diffuser. You don't give me confidence that you are organized and correctly talking about the subject. Sorry for that but that's what I see here. You can sell yourself much better by being prepared and organized before you shoot. This will give your viewers confidence that you do know what you are talking about. Your hesitancy kills you.

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  3 роки тому

      You’re a little late on the view, nonetheless it’s appreciated. I have been planning on making a new review because I use this on all of my event shoots and have a difference of opinion now. I honestly don’t try to sell anything other than a honest opinion. I implore you to watch other videos of mine or check out my work on my website or Instagram, I think that will give you the confidence you’re seeking as far as to know if I actually know what I’m talking about. Thanks again 🙏🏾

    honestly, from this review I think it's a crappy product, maybe it diffuses light, but those shadows are very unprofessional, you're better off with no modifier and just shoot at she ceiling if there is one. i'd never use one at an event based on this review

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography

      Ewald Gruescu in all fairness I might do another one. I’m not sure if I was in the right setting but I haven’t stopped using it and I’ve gotten some great results at events. It works better with diff focal ranges I’ve realized. It’s not perfect but after using it some more it has def impressed me at times...might have to update.

      @@JasonOsbornePhotography Hi Jason, this is what we in radio were always told. If we are doing a bit and chuckle, it cannot be an "inside" joke. You have to let your audience in on it. Just a comment. As for tuning in, my 30 plus year career ended a year ago in November. I don't expect to go back to it, but you never know, right? You can listen to some of my artist interviews in my Fresh Face Friday segments which I posted here along with the aspiring artists photos.
