  • Just as one stain can ruin our favorite outfit, a neglected blemish on a Christian’s character can spoil his witness. Today, Sinclair Ferguson reflects on a penetrating letter by John Newton, who wrote the hymn “Amazing Grace.”

My husband pointed out my anxiety/lack of trust, opening my eyes to the fact that I wasn’t being a good witness to our son-in-law, who worshipped odin. Praise be to God, our SIL is now a believer and leading our daughter & grandson! There are still flaws in me, since I won’t be made perfect until I leave my worn tent, but I am more aware of them.

Yes, Pastor I tell mine scratches to Jesus. He knows everything of me and I trust Him to make the Judgement and He lets me know. I repent and ask forgiveness. Mortals often distort things this way or many. I have noticed the Spiritual equivalent. Cleansing is happening to me Pastor. The Spirit of the Lord has come down again. You have a way to put in words what I know is Truth. I got the scratches and long ago I knew, keep my mouth shut-focus the new car or I never saw the scratch. Jesus loves me, no doubt, no doubt. Oh Lord, my scratches. Surely, I am your child. Amen

Very challenging. There are bound to be sinful characteristics about each of us that we haven't noticed. But hopefully something like this is not the main thing that other people notice. But I have just asked the Lord to show me just in case.

I ask that of God every week prior to communion that He may reveal my tranpasses that I may repent of them.

Trust me; everyone has something. If you don’t, you’d be Jesus. Mine is talking about myself instead of asking about the other person.

@@DogSoldier1948. You need to repent as soon as you know you’ve sinned. Communion is for remembering how Jesus gave all His blood and His body for our forgiveness. It’s not the time to repent, but to rejoice in our salvation. Read your Bible and stop following your religions made up rules.

@@jesusbeloved3953 Jesus introduced the Passover meal on the night before His death. Paul shows its solemnity in the warnings he gives to those who would participate in the supper in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34.
Paul is concerned that Christians in the Corinthian church are not participating in the Lord’s Supper properly, so he writes to teach, correct, and warn them. The supper is the new covenant in Jesus’ death. For Christians, it involves remembering, reflecting, recommitting, and reconnecting with Jesus in all the solemnity of His saving work. Paul reminds them that they must come to the Lord’s table only if they are worthy. What is the worthiness that Paul demands? It is not moral perfection but rather genuine Christian commitment (1 Cor. 11:19). That commitment should be examined and reviewed before communion. We must truly believe that Christ’s death is for us and secures our salvation. We must recognize that our participation in the supper is a testimony and proclamation to the world that we trust His saving work.
If we are unworthy when we come to the table, we become guilty with those who put the Lord to death. Instead of saving us, the death of Christ will condemn us. This is serious indeed. To avoid this horrifying outcome, we must examine and judge ourselves. We must repent

“Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning, the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
But what does it mean to take the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner? Today’s passage tells us problems arise when we partake “without discerning the body” (1 Cor. 11:29), so worthy partaking of the supper means that we discern the body. In context, this must refer in some way to harmony in the body of Christ, since Paul wrote 1 Corinthians 11 in order to correct selfishness and other communal sins connected with the Corinthians’ partaking of the supper (vv. 17-22). So, it seems sinning against other Christians and not repenting is a failure to discern the body. However, it goes beyond that to include all other impenitent sins as well, including the sin of unbelief. The Lord’s Supper is a sacrament only for believers, and those who do not trust Christ or who profess faith and yet are in serious, impenitent sin should not partake lest they eat and drink judgment on themselves (v. 29).
The Lord’s Supper is for Christians, not for perfect people. That we are sinners should not keep us from taking the supper. If we come to the Lord’s Table confessing our sin and repenting for it, we may freely partake of the bread and wine.
I do agree with you if you know you sinned, then you need to repent then, but one may sin and not realize it.
