I grew up in the Fruitvale area of Oakland. Learned from gangsters and OGs. But that was a different era. It's actually safer being a Latino kid these days as we aren't warring with each other like in the 90s and 00s. But I carry that trauma and still worry about my son, nephews, etc. becoming victims of violence. The main problem now is the lack of affordability that has whole families renting out one room for $1,000+ per month. There's always been two Oaklands, the well to do and the working class. The housing crises and inflation really has the working class on the ropes these days and the growing population of well to dos is rapidly gentrifying many neighborhoods and even pricing out much of what was the middle class. Out of state people think Cali and Oakland are these socialist dystopias, but it's really market forces and gangster capitalism that have resulted in the savage inequalities we see on the Oakland streets.

@@AuroraBoarder1 : With all due respect, blab your own self-righteous twaddle to your own heart's DISCONTENT. Your claims about Oakland in the 1960s and 1970s is incredibly selective and self-serving, as the ACTUAL FACTS and statistics completely contradict you in full; cases in point: Oakland LOST most of its homegrown corporations and downtown leasing, which lowered the (a) taxbase and thereby (b) shattered the city's ability to uphold everything from strong school systems to maintaining of city streets and parks (e.g., Lake Merritt declined to trash-filled, stagnant eyesore, largely abandoned after 5:00 pm at night) (c) Oakland LOST TENS OF THOUSANDS OF RESIDENTS to the suburbs, Berkeley, San Francisco, ANYWHERE, sending the tax base even deeper into the basement and rendering vast stretches of the Town into a literal industrial wasteland, peopled almost solely by desperate, enraged, and drug and alcohol-fueled violent criminals who drew violent, brutalizing response from a second-rate racist police department starved of funds and in a city to which no top-tier candidates ever want to move or serve .
Today's reality is verifiably, objectively different, as in Night and Day: Oakland of the 2020s has a larger population than it ever has in its entire history--tens of thousands of young, educated, and affluent people of many cultures are moving INTO Oakland precisely because of the city's diversity in make-up and wildly creative culinary, arts, and music scenes, NONE of which could exist without an affluent local population. Corporations, from tech to large-scale utilities corporations, are moving TO and not from Oakland, drawn by young, educated population, amenities, and a rapidly modernizing downtown that STILL retains classic historical buildings. With the new, expanding tax base, Oakland's once ragged parks are now not only restored by Bay Area-wide attractions. For example, during the 1970s, Oakland Zoo was rated among the very WORST in the nation. Today, Oakland Zoo - with its expanded, innovative, and utterly stunning "California Exhibition" is not just rated among the nation's very best (and now reaching full parity and eclipsing SF Zoo in terms of being a bio-zoology-research-oriented zoo) but also a true world-class research-grounded zoo. And even Oakland's once fearsome crime rate, the measure and tragic proof of Oakland's shattering twentieth century decline, is but a FRACTION of what it was in the years between 1960 through 1999. The OBJECTIVE FACTS speak for themselves: greater population, greater tax base, much wealthier and higher educated population, extended downtown building boom producing more new square footage than during Oakland's first expanded boom in the 1920s; Oakland's dominance in culinary arts, surpassing vaunted Berkeley; the rise of Oakland's zoo to top-tier status; the continuing importance of Oakland in musical arts; the emergence of Oakland as feeder for Hollywood (Zendaya, Mahershala Ali,Daveed Diggs, Rafael Casal, et al.), the world media of record--NYTimes, UK Express, Boston Globe, NPR, Le Monde, National Geographic, LA Times, et al.--ALL including Oakland in either "cities-on-the-rise" features and/or prestigious annual cities to visit list (Oakland has made the NYTimes list several times over the past ten years, whereas San Francisco has not) all forcefully refute YOUR subjective and bigoted opinion.
Oh, indeed you are entitled to hate Oakland to your heart's content. But it is to YOUR self-shredded credibility that you willfully confuse YOUR personal animus with reality, and that when confronted with your jaundiced, prejudiced views, you resort to barely disguised ad-hominem attacks. Bad form. Bad argumentation. FAIL.

@@RichFlemingRealtor Oakland just had its 100th homicide. That doesnt happen everywhere. Per capita its crime rate is worse than Chicago. Oakland also rounds out the top 10 for homelessness. Either you are delusional or lying to the public to sell property to further gentrify the area.

@@hufair2215 ... I have NEVER claimed Oakland doesn't have crime challenges. Buts, let's deal with facts. Depending on who's stats you use, Oakland had about 132 murders in 2021 ... the highest number since the early 2000s. However, violent crime and murders are up DRAMATICALLY across the nation. Oakland had 5 murders in Jan 2022. A MUCH lower rate than in 2021. The last full year stats available from the FBI (2019) indicate that Oakland had the 31st highest murder rate at just under 18 per 100,000. Cities such as Chattanooga, TN, Indianapolis, IN and Dayton, OH had much higher murder rates. Spreading the narrative that Oakland is just one big battle ground shows YOU are the delusional one or only focus on the bad in life. Oakland has its challenges, but has a lot of good in it, too! Try contributing to positive change. Thanks for stopping by.

Regarding the 5 best points, the parks are great places to get mugged, and the die-versity can turn you into an ultra-conservative, even a racist. You can find great locations, food, and weather in lots of places that don't come at such a high price.
I'm a black woman who grew up in Oakland. I tore out of there like a bat out of hell, soon as I turned 18. To this day, it's the best decision I ever made.
STAY THE F**K. OUT OF THIS S#ITHOLE!!@

Thanks for putting so much effort into your trolling comment. If Oakland isn't for you, it's great you left. Hope you're happy wherever you're living. Oakland is far from perfect, but PLENTY of people disagree with your OPINION.
