    This is not a problem today, this is a theoretical problem for 10-20 years from now.
    It is way, way too expensive to do this for modern and even mid era Pokemon. The cost for finding even the most valuable modern hits in Pokemon/MTG is not worth it.
    When this technology becomes much, much, much, much cheaper in a decade or two, then it will become a problem.

    This is not easily replicable. The process he used is an incredibly technical process requiring both rare equipment and advanced programming chops dealing with machine learning not commonly associated together. The number of people able to do this is few and far between. No one should be worried about this more than they should have already been worried about buying individual packs. Also just because he is the first to publicly demonstrate the process doesn't mean this hasn't already been done.

    • @KitchenTableTCG

      I think we will see this become a service.

    • @thisiswes666
      @thisiswes666 Місяць тому

      Ya he does say that he wants to patent and commercialize it but also says the process is not able to be applied at scale (pretty much 0 commercial value at that point). I assume this is likely due to the time it actually takes to process a single pack.
      Then there is the issue if you are a big store selling this service no one will buy loose packs from you... you will be buying boxes... opening them to scan packs and then be completely unable to sell those loose packs. So selling it as a service is not very useful for a store.
      So then if you are a store buying this service to scan your loose packs then you are just adding costs... i mean rare cards are still rare cards and the cost of scanning one pack likely is prohibitively expensive unless you are hunting down a very valuable card.

      @@KitchenTableTCG If people are aware of this it’s only going to drive demand for loose packs further down, and this whole system is only slightly profitable if you can resell the packs that aren’t hits. I understand your fears but I suspect the finances of such an endeavor will not be as smooth as you are imagining right now.

    I can totally see the appeal of switching to digital mtg. Paper is just so fundamental and important in so many ways! Paper keeps the balance of the game in check, if things tend to shift into digital they can push the boundaries of new mechanics. That seems fun but paper is the weight of the game, it is just sad that between cheating and product manipulation the game seems to have a grim future on paper. That being said if this becomes a problem, there are probably solutions in terms of packaging, it will become a cat and mouse game.

    If this ever takes off and becomes widespread then sealed investing is dead and the only value left will be in vintage PSA 10s. Sealed products do well due to the mystery/potential, and there’s already no more mystery left to a graded card to be stripped away, yet the value is there for other reasons.

    Watched the original video more critically than all of you did. Yes if you have a card it'll come up in the scanner. The best the guy showed was a pack where you could see a curling card. Maybe if that's bad enough you'll get a good enough angle to see the card. He tested a stack of cards "in wrapping" but the card he did that with was machamp a base set card that was available only in the decks wrapped in clear plastic. Everything else was either a raw card or a stack of cards out of the metallic wrapper. When he started to do a transformation to get a picture from the top down he cut out to other footage and never showed what card it was. This is just a scam to make back his 2500ish he spent on the crap for an idea that went nowhere because otherwise he'd be buying and selling 1st edition base set packs to crack, grade, and sell the foil 8s 9s & 10s and make his money back that way.

    3:16 In those cases, I think it is fair if you shuffle a new box with the remaining loose packs so that there are always hits in the loose packs.
    After all, it creates the chance of hitting multiple high-rarity hits in the same box.

    Back in the day with Yuigioh cards, me and a friend figured out you could slide down I think the first 4 cards as the rare was always the fifth card. (not sure on the exact number) Since all rares except Super rares had their name embossed you could use tin foil and press down to get a read of exactly what Rare, Ultra Rare, or Secret Rare was in the pack. If nothing came up it was a Super Rare.
    We went to a walmart in a town over, took every one of their packs, and when to the lawn and garden section and sat on some patio furniture while we figured out what was in every pack and bought the ones that were profitable

    X-Ray/ct is bad enough but with advancements in terahertz scanning technology (via. time-gated spectral imaging) even boxes and non-foils won't be safe at some point in the future. The tech is neither mature nor cheap but it will be at some point. Also used (non-medical) CT scanners are shockingly cheap especially when they are in need of repairs.

    I'm working with x-ray machines. Really easily explained: the scans (x-rays) get made into the pictures we see by differentiating by density, and the foil on the cards are more dense than where theres no foil. With how good machine learning and AI is getting nowadays, I will say this is easily replicable on a grand scale with the right team and enough capital. Grading companies can get this working fast if they want to. It can also potentially work on every type of card that has differences in density on them, like foils etc. from whatever game there is ✌️

    • @simmmi_
      @simmmi_ Місяць тому

      The most interesting part about this is that if companies start using this method effectively, we may not be far off having algorithms good enough to x-ray a sealed booster box for its contents. We're years away from this though

    He doesn't have a color CT scanner; all it will take is a whale to get him a color scanner that can read the various pigment. His flattening seems to be the money. He could probably sell that formula part alone and make some people made money. Soon we will have lead-lined packs if the foil packs used now are not reflective in the scan. Then this is only old Pokemon and Magic issue with the plastic wrappers.

    Something to point out about the CT scanner this dude used... This kid used a low end CT scanner.
    But what if someone gets their hands on a scanner that can see individual layers of a PCB? I dont know but I would bet that a sufficiently advanced machine could see ink density and layers of ink. A machine like that might not need the foil layer to see what is inside a pack of cards.
    I have a jewelers loop. When you look at a magic card, you can see the rosettes that make up the art.... but the words printed on the cards are overlaying the ink rosettes with solid black print. I wonder if the ink density is different on the text?
    The cat is out of the bag. Its only a matter of time before someone with enough money, time and knowledge come together and figure this out. Old magic might not be safe for long.

    I feel this will be a bigger deal long term more than anything else. Since the more people research into it the better we’ll get at going through the noise of the non foil imaging.
    I could see bigger companies doing this, but idk if any will do it soon. Since they would have to spend a million or more for a brand new working machine. And pay the salary of 100-200k for just a user of the machine nevermind a person who can repair it and be able to read the imaging.
