I checked in with Cummins at the Overland Expo West, in Flagstaff, Arizona. Many thanks to Brittany Borella and Steve Sanders at Cummins, as well as Luke at New Legends 4x4.
I've been chasing this story since last November, when I wrote about Cummins' SEMA announcement for the eBayMotor Blog. My goal is to document the efficiency improvements in one or more swaps.

I love 4bt's , but at 750 lbs dry they're too heavy for a lot of smaller vehicles. The Cummins 2.8 sounds like a much better option for little jeeps, mini trucks, etc.
As if weight wasn't enough of an issue, the 4bt will also rattle your brains out... no thanks.
I would do a first gen 4Runner. I think that would be an amazing combination.

My plan is to drop one in my 2nd gen when the 3.0 gives up the ghost. Hopefully someone makes adapters by then.

I think I would still rather have the 4bt, its almost completely mechanical, fairly cheap, it can also share parts with a 6bt and there is more options out there for upgrades
It's also 300 pounds heavier and in some applications that would be a deal breaker
I can think of several vehicles that would benefit from a Cummins 2.8 litre turbo diesel engine.
My 1992 Range Rover Classic for 1. Just have to figure out the adapter to my transmission. :)

I'd swap one into a 2017 Dart GT those are kinda hard to find since not many gt's were made and I think 2017 was the last year of the dart. One reason why I'd do it cause when it was in production I thought since Chevy has diesels in their compact cars and now in one of their small SUVs (equinox and GMC terrain) maybe the dart should have a diesel and the 2.8 is the only one i think would have been perfect Dodge probably would have left off the Cummins badges and stuff and didn't call the motor a Cummins either

Wish Cummins would do a plug and play crate motor for the 5.0 V8 Cummins but I do like the 2.8 I also liked the 3.9

On The Fast Lane Truck UA-cam channel, they show a 2014 Nissan Frontier with this exact engine with a ZF-8 transmission. They stated that it makes 200 hp and around 350 lb-ft of torque. So, why is this crate engine so underpowered?
A cursory google search says that in CA, a diesel vehicle older than 95 doesn't go through emissions testing though.
You are correct, the only think you would have to do to make it California legal is take it to the referee so he can verify that is no longer gas and has a diesel motor in it.
It just doesn't have the hp or torque numbers that it should for its size and price.
For the size I was expecting 225hp and 350ft/lbs of torque. For the price however I'd expect each of those numbers to be increased by at least 50.
Yeah but don't let that fool you. The smaller frame vehicle like a Jeep Rock your socks. I have one in mine and I am a muscle car enthusiast
Is the 2.8TD that much more efficient than a 4BT? I'm thinking in larger vehicles, the 4BT would have better economy.
4bt is a heaaaavy engine.
A jku is a heavey pig anyways so the 4tb or others isn't gonna matter much

It’s a cummins so you can get way more horsepower and torque by adding some mods to it like you would a 5.9 or 6.7

The kits are available now. Not sure of the exact price. They has some cool trucks with the 2.8T at the SEMA show this week, but I didn't shoot video at the show.
Hmm, common rail fuel injection & Bosch fuel system. Sounds like another VW nightmare. Are high pressure fuel pump issues with low sulfur diesel going to be an issue, as with the 2.0 VW plant? No thanks.

Can anyone recommend a Transmission adapter for the NAG1 Transmission from a 2012 to 2018 Jeep? I am looking for some kits that will work for either the 4BT or this R 2.8 Engine. Any help would be great!

Last I heard... unfortunately yes. The '99 limit for the rest of the country isn't that much better. My 1st (and only) Wrangler was a 2000 and had to get rid of it in the early 2000's when gas shot up to $4+/gal

Dirt Every Day never said that the Cummings they put in their Jeep was a 4BT. It's a shame that it is. I was hoping that the ominous way that test run ended up (without too many engine details) would indicate that is was a different engine.
Depending on what kind of plastic I'd prefer it. The one under my 2.7 Ecoboost was indestructible. But any oil pan is only as good offroad as the skidplate that protects it. I wouldn't think twice about the oil pan itself. If you're going to the trouble to do a build like that you'll have a massive skidplate.

It's 503 pounds. I just added a link to the product page in the description. By comparison, the 1998 4.0L inline six was rated at 181 HP / 222 pound-feet of torque.

for low speed offroad stuff, this Cummins will beat any LS any day. the diesel can idle over almost anything, and it will probably go 3 times as far in terms of fuel economy. And that is Cummins' target crowd.

lol - Interesting side note... there "was" a pretty substantial Fiero Museum in Northern Michigan (who knew)... 'til the recent and unprecedented Spring floods (May 2020) ended up taking out two earthen dams that wiped out the museum and a large part of the small town where the museum was located.

do you understand the point of a diesel engine? it's all about low end torque. 267 lb-ft@1500-3000 RPM. you can literally idle over any boulder, cruise while towing at peak torque. This is not a race car's engine, it's meant for off road and overlanding road trips.

yes i agree gearing goes a long way, but that doesn't disprove my point that it's not about the HP. HP doesn't mean much off road and long road trips. but if you said no to $9000 for 267 lb-ft, i would have agreed with you.

Considering how constantly emissions standards keep changing, what may be legal now, may not be legal tomorrow. Cummins needs to be aware of that when developing a new engine, of any size.

it's absolute bullshit that they put any restrictions on what you put in YOUR vehicle.
Less power and torque than the TDI in my Volkswagen Passat, which only has 2.0 liters. Just saying.
Oh, and my old '99 New Beetle TDI is still going after nearly 400,000 original miles, 250K of those as a test bed for extreme mods. (Big injectors, huge turbos, etc.) Never been opened up. Runs like new.
Seems like the Cummins should be able to make more grunt than that.
well u get 1000hp out a 6bt and 750 respectively from the 4bt .. think I'm exaggerating.. UA-cam.. seeing is believing

well the good ol cummins is the only diesel I'm aware of at least. that does not have nor could you install glow plugs for a old school Cummins to run you only need two things power to turn it on and power to shut it off
and with that beautiful Talent of combustion via compression there's nothing to go wrong componentwise and I know 4bts& b3.3t are outragesly high. rebuilt or not.. you're better off finding a service truck that has a 4B Etc or a school bus that has a brand new motor in it and tranny and they're usually sell them for like 45 or 7000.. here's my Kicker I want 2 collaborate with a diesel mechanic I'm good friends with an our odd ball mix of gear heads.. an other xterra/frontier owners.. .. our family owns a glass franchise 90% is auto n heavy equipment. as well I have a working relationship with a very large electric supply company.. "sets the massive supply lines" and a paving company/equipment resellers. they both have that edge I need to get these motors cheap. I'm focusing on first gen 2003-4 .. . actually bought a xterra bout 8 months ago unseen. for 500. an I drive it daily. just picked up a 4x4 to do a total frame swap after ive rebuilt all seals. n component upgrade. then jdm motor n tranny. in the mean time.. gotta get me some motors to rebuild . an mock up frame..
I want to establish a set of configurations that are dependable .. and reliability of the drivetrain. what tranny. adapter plates..will stock axles twist?.. what if I slam a 2000 frontier to the ground and boost the he'll out of it?? whats gonna be the weak ness. once we establish that. we can focus on applications. old Cherokee. geo tracker. there is a vehicle for every walk of life. an I'm getting sick of cars costing more and becoming more complicated and less reliable..
