I have a winter home in the Philippines. I just bought a Chinese-made pickup truck there called a Foton thunder (4-door 4x4) brand new, 2019, for USD $20,000......It has - from the factory - a Cummins 2.8 turbo-diesel, Gertrag 5-speed manual transmission, a Borg-Warner transfer case, and Dana axles. It is Great !! Used to own some semi's, always loved Cummins....
Brat Cafe i bought a honda pioneeer with a plow for 18k i got a better deal and u cant even take that 4x4 in the sand without sinking and getting stuck
The federal gov't is here.... to screw the diesel world by having raised the prices of diesel fuel years ago and by screwing it with DEF system that make the MPG go to shit along with the hp numbers and reliability.
Proven Overland Magazine in the United States of America! It’s been everywhere else in the world because because who knows why.... but it wants to play here now.
I have a 05 liberty crd with a 2.8, and i am sure the numbers are comparable to the cummins in this video. This would be a great conversion, we just got back from a trip from VA to Alabama and we passed all the gassers on the uphill grades without even falling out of overdrive, no drop in speed no freewheeling down the grades, 30mpg loaded with luggage and equipment. I would say this is worth the money if you travel.
Here in Australia, I have a Nissan 4x4 ute (pick up) with a 2.3 litre common rail, 4 cylinder, twin turbo. Puts out 188hp/450nm. Popular motors here. Can tow up to 3.5 tonnes and I can get 6.4 litres per 100km on the freeway. Pretty remarkable engines.
Really cool idea and our hats off to the guys at Cummins for the attempt. These will make many TJ owners happy. The issue with putting these into anything remotely modern (anything newer than 2000 Jeeps etc) is integrating these custom powertrains into vehicles that are almost entirely computer controlled. Transmission controls, onboard instrumentation, cruise control and safety systems, etc. will all need to talk to each other and be custom-programmed. This amounts to a ton of electrical wiring and programming. As such, this will be costly to implement on many levels. Guys hoping for a sub $10k diesel swap will be sorely disappointed. Secondly, emissions compliance. For those hoping to install one of these into a 2005+ Tacoma etc. I'm afraid you wont have a Cummins certificate of compliance anytime soon. In order to be compliant, these engines will need to have treatment systems and Cummins would need to certify the installation for each vehicle. This is both ridiculously expensive and complicated. Cummins can sell these for TJ Jeeps and older Landcruisers because these vehicles are grandfathered in due to age. We actually prototyped these engines a few years ago in a 2008 Tacoma and they performed really well.
These should be made available for smaller SUVs and trucks. Not everyone needs a big badass Ford F350 with a 6.7 Powerstroke, or a Chevy/GMC truck with a 6.6 Duramax Diesel. Most of us simply need smaller truck to haul things to a job we have, or to tow a small trailer, a travel trailer or a utility trailer.
This motor needs to be an option for wranglers. They are putting the ecodiesel in the wrangler eventually but only in the 4 door because of its size of transmission and def tank. It would be nice to have a diesel like this in the 2 door.
I love my 4.0 in my XJ but it's lacking power and gets such shitty mileage. And I want to keep everything mopar but Hemi's are huge and expensive. I think I'll have to start saving for this cummins
I have contacted Cummins for a price but haven't heard back yet. I expecting some major sticker shock however, I prefer to keep older rigs. Furthermore, if you compare it to buying a new diesel vehicle it's probably a more sensible option for those that enjoy maintaining their older vehicles.
I LOVE diesel! I got a 2012 Mercedes, V6 Turbodiesel but the emission controls are killing me and the engine. The EGR and the PCV are clogging up the intake and the adblue system is constantly needing repair. I do hope that Cummins can stay within the EPA rules without compromising longevity of the engine. Great to see more diesel options in the USA! :-)
Its not a jdm engine. They sell them in hiluxs here in Australia. There not as good as the 4.2 straight 6 turbo diesel we get in the 70 series landcruisers. Those engine would pull this cummins in half 😂 last longer to haha
This is just the engine for those with something like a Ford Expedition--like me--who want better mileage and a more reliable engine than the Triton 5.4L.
pancudowny i think it’s like 10 grand without being adapted to your transmission or with the engine mounts or anything. Better to just save yourself the pain, sell the expedition, and buy a ford wit a 7.3 or an older suv and swap in an older 4bt to pass emissions for way cheaper
I don't think the 2.8 would work very well for a vehicle of the weight of your Expedition however all is not lost shop.bankspower.com/i-2556-13110-engine-gale-banks-630t-v6-3-0l-diesel.html
pancudowny I have a 2006 f350 with the 5.4 and it is the worst motor I have ever dealt with. I don’t know why every car and truck in North America does not come with diesel.
Actually a pretty solid price, considering everything is new and it’s a complete package. If you’re keeping something for the long term, this would be a great option.
I have seen some do an ISF3.8 swap on their jeep. It's more efficient, powerful, and torquey than it's older cousin which is the 4bt. There should be a 3 engine line of Repower engines in addition to the 2.8l I4 diesel, a 215 hp 3.8L I4 based of the ISF3.8L, and a 5.0L V8 based off the ISV5.0. A Repower for everyone.
Everyone is so worried about out put numbers. It's known that it isn't hard to 'wake' up a diesel and get more power out of them. I'm sure the low starting numbers are a result of this being emission compliment with a broad number of vehicles. It will be interesting when companies like efi live release tuning options for this and people start deleting and tuning them. Then I'm sure compound will surely follow quickly afterwards.
So don't worry about spending alot of money for no power cause you can always spend more! and um, they were talking about fuel costs like this would save money lol.
Matt Lane tuning and deleting is fairly basic practice with diesels now a days. And as much as it would cost to swap it would not out way the fuel savings, but going on a trip or off road trip the amount of miles you get on a trip can be a big space saver and very convenient when going for longer trips. Along with the power to turn the larger tires when highway driving is a benefit as well. Also, this program is targeting a very wide market, but the immediate people they are after are the ones who are doing build and are yet to have a power plant. This Cummins directly competes with the ls crate options on the market.
Matt Lane if you're only getting 10 mpg and struggle to go 70 down the highway, this is a good option. I'm planning on buying an XJ with a better body next year and really thinking about doing this swap
They have an article about how they put this motor in a half ton truck and it was making over 200 hp and almost 400 ft lbs of torque but they stopped pursuing that for some reason
I'm glad cummins is doing this and I'm glad it's causing excitement. The Rep is right the numbers don't tell the full story, but I feel as if this is more of a niche product than most commentators are making this out to be. It makes 160hp, and 250 ftlbs I'm sure it gets good fuel mileage and a flat diesel power curve is great. but still...I won't be rushing out buying one of these.
Claus Vlogs partially its our falut( the consumer) that toyota hasnt entered the diesel scene because we still buy millions of tacos instead of the diesel twins. but once yota realizes demand for small diesels theyll have either enter for a slice of the pie or be willing to miss sales
Dude, that is my dream engine swap. One of my goals in life is to put a cummins in a 1st gen Tacoma, maybe an '04, with a manual drive train... oh my gosh I would fall in love
Man this is going to change the overland hobby. I was lucky enough to get engine #25 and had planned on using it on a personal fj55 project but a old hot rod customer wanted it worst so a cj8 scrambler it will go all with the jku Rubicon chassis it was to be installed in. my stipulation was if the next one isn't here by november I get to overland up on hull mtn/mendo pass a week before christmas to find that perfect tree in his jeep. can't wait for the 5.0 rollout as its destined for dad's 78 e-van that we rolled in as a kid, who knew 4wd was better when the van could bounce and be come alonged every 6ft.
I’m so excited about this! I thought I’d have to move back to England to off-road in a TD engine smaller than 3L giving me plenty of power to do what I want, and provide a decent fuel economy simultaneously. Thank you Cummins!
I like this. Crate engines have been popular in the hot rodding world bringing new life to old rides and to see Cummins enter the off road world with a diesel may only be just the beginning. Should this thing fly, just as in the hot rodding world with diverse options to choose from, so too could the future be for the diesel and off roading. For those wanting more power options, it may just come about. Good video Overland Bound.
Need one of these in my 98 Tacoma 4x4 sr5 😍😍 along with a 115L diesel tank which is about 30 gallons. Twice as much as the stock 15 gallon tank in my Tacoma. 25mpg multiplied by 30 gallons = 750 miles before I have to fuel up again 💆🏻♂️ it would cost me about 20k for all that though! One can dream. One can dream
Super cool program. I'll have to check if they offer a 6 cylinder or plan to. For me I couldn't spend motor swap money for the same stock power my 80 came with even with the awesome mpg
Kevin Hornbuckle unless it was a Cummins day one designed Jake brake I wouldn't use it. the new Colorado diesel has a engine brake but it uses the variable vanes in the turbo to do so. I've seen many failures in the dealer due to it.
Not to be a negative Nelly, because I am a huge 5.9 fan, but a 25 mpg average is pretty crap for a 2.8TD in a 5k lbs jeep. My 2006 duramax 6.6 ran over 23mpg in a 6k unloaded truck. By the time I was on the highway, I was over 7,500 lbs. Mpg was consistent from Wyoming to Corpus Christi, with a long stop in heavy traffic in Houston. For anyone that plans to buy this kit, get an EFI live tune, better exhaust, and a good intake, I have no doubt you can achieve 28+ with those mods.
Cummins should consider adding another repowwr engine to the lineup in the 3.8L to 3.9L range with 300hp and 500 foot pounds of torque would be a nice place to start.
Sweet looking engine! I hope that Cummins is able to offer it for American customers. Given the constantly changing emissions standards imposed on engine makers by the damn EPA, it's all but impossible to make a diesel engine that's "clean enough" to please them. However, not everyone either needs or wants a 6.7 litre Cummins turbo diesel engine, sometimes a small displacement turbo diesel engine would work just fine, thank you. :)
I'm excited and want one for my yota ... but at the same time... I get the feeling this crate motor is going to cost more than my entire truck and all the upgrades combined.
Yeah but say, 10 grand to do this, and drive your rig for the next 10+ years, or a new truck at 40 grand or more? :) I just keep maintaining and driving my 92. I don't want a newer rig. I hope to keep it for another 20 years heh.
Cummins is giving discounts on the crate engine, to the tune of $1k off (so about $7k-$8k). That's a lot, but still in line with what other crate engine setup's fetch. Also, putting this kind of engine into a 1990's era LC 80 would definitely add at least something to the resale value. I don't think you'll recoup the full cost of the swap, but diesel LandCruisers are hard to come by an will fetch a premium if properly built and maintained.
This is a slightly different engine I think... DED put in an ISF2.8 motor as opposed to the R2.8 featured in this video. I don't know how much difference there is, really. That was a funny episode tho
That engine on DED was a prototype and may not run the plastic sump now. You'd be having a bash plate or some type of sump guard to protect it in any case.
For fun, I got a real challenge for you, see if you can put one in a 68-74 Ford Econoline van, the largest engine available was a 302 V8, and for an idea of space available, the 351W is too wide and tall, takes modification to fit it, not suitable for daily driver. I bought this because the engine placement makes it within reach for service, and using a wheelchair makes a van the best option for me, that and I put a bed in it for sleeping. The 302 is murder, the stock/original engine musters about 10 MPG at best, and forget towing, it just doesn't have enough power to do it.
Yay finally a motor like those in Australia! Sounds like its going to really take the market by storm depending on the cost. Any idea of the price for one of these engines?
Gary Cloud. They are in Australia. Foton Cummins China make these engines and they installed in most Foton Tunlands etc. I have a 2015 foton view royal saloon which looks like a toyota hiace commuter. Power wise craps all over any hiace I've driven but they aren't old enough yet to see if the longevity is there.
The D4D Toyota is a pretty sick little modern diesel engine. I got to ride in a few Toyota Fortuners in Asia with them and they pull hard. Recently I got a std dodge with the 24v diesel and that low end tq and mileage increase is crazy coming from a gas truck similar. But with diesel the parts are allot of money and servicing costs more.
Just watched the video of the bronco with the #1 beta engine over at TFLC on youtube, unreal! these engines will change 4wd market in the U.S. The same Cummings rep was interviewed and said to expect it to be in the LS3 price range once it is on the open market.
I have a 1984 Ranger diesel 2.2 Perkins and its really low power but gets me really good mileage but if that engine dies this is the engine that I'm putting it in
mandaloin looked like from the diagram they have wires for gauges in the wiring harness. Hard part will be figuring out the stock wire set up to match with the supplied Cummings harness.
I just spoke with TORFAB about helping me find a diesel for 62 or 80 project and said we could do it, but parts may have to come from Africa or the Middle East if there were problems. This would solve all those issues . They give you any details about what might work for the rest of the driveline? Not much on Advance Adapters about it other than the one video.
I built the land cruiser that's my AV after they announced these motors.... that was 2 years ago. We still have no clue how much they're going to cost.
That engine COULD make more power. It has max horsepower at *low rpm* so that means you could put in a hotter cam (higher max hp & higher redline.) That means the torque wouldn't be AS HIGH at low rpm's though. You could also ADD boost. I wonder what power it could handle at it's limit.
Kit doesn't include an intercooler of course because every application is different, only has 161hp, 267 lbs torque and a wimpy 120amp alternator. fuel efficient though.
my 1990 yj 4.2 . garaged for 27 years. 70,000 miles no rust because I washed an wd40 motor, frame etc. I need a motor like that. LS1 is an optio n also.
I have a winter home in the Philippines.

Love it when a ford power stroke ad plays before a cummins video

Agreed, I have look at some of the V8 option as well and not only are they costly, they also require a lot custom work to install.
Someone on Pirate 4x4 was saying $8500, who knows if that's correct though..
Congratulations y’all successfully created a UNREALIABLE 4Bt
I LOVE diesel! I got a 2012 Mercedes, V6 Turbodiesel but the emission controls are killing me and the engine. The EGR and the PCV are clogging up the intake and the adblue system is constantly needing repair. I do hope that Cummins can stay within the EPA rules without compromising longevity of the engine. Right on Cummins! About time! This product line is going to change the world of motorsports!!!
now I just need some money

And lots of time
A lot of money
How much
@@gsfbffxpdhhdf7043 $9,000 just for the crate motor
1951 Dodge M37... would love that engine
I cannot WAIT to get one if these into my 3rd Gen 4Runner!
Larry Queen some companies import them diesel 6 speed
Larry Queen why not just but the 3.0 turbo diesel that comes in them?
Kevin Smith the JDM engine? It never came to America, and this will be 50 State emissions legal. Plus, this one will be brand new.
Its not a jdm engine. They sell them in hiluxs here in Australia. There not as good as the 4.2 straight 6 turbo diesel we get in the 70 series landcruisers. Those engine would pull this cummins in half 😂 last longer to haha
Kevin Smith yeah! They're illegal here. This will not be though
I have a list of about 15 cars and trucks this would be a godsend for. holy crap, I have a great need...
Looks like an excellent package.. well done.
Nice.... Welcome to rest of the overlanding world
Sticking one in my 99 dodge dakota. Baby Ram

That is one badass ambulance in the background!
I have one of these in my Foton Van and its okay, lacks power but does the job
Such a sweet engine. i want one!
Holy crap the best engine for land cruiser 80 series!
At nearly $10k, I think most will stick to 4bt/6bt's.
hell even a mercedes 3.0 5cyl is a better choice
That’s including all of the auxiliaries pedal and ECM/wiring. Not a crazy price for a brand new product.
Actually a pretty solid price, considering everything is new and it’s a complete package. If you’re keeping something for the long term, this would be a great option.
Ryan Jenkins restored 4bts go for near enough 10k and they are a worse motor in every singe way, and they don’t come with a wiring harness.
@@Aron-ru5zk If you buy a restored 4bt rather than a used one and going thru it yourself, you deserve to be paying 10k lol
YES!!! I've been wanting to find a 4bt to put in my jeep grand! this is even lighter than the 4.0!! awesome
This would be really awesome in my JKU.
Making this 4 cylinder into a inline 6 cylinder would be 4.2 liter .
A 3.0 v6 turbo diesel with 240 hp and 420 lbs ft of torque similar in output to the jeep and ram offerings would be acceptable
"Shut up and take my money!"
Will def be looking into one of these for my next swap!
I could finally have a diesel Land Rover in the US.
Aaron Maughan, yes! Too bad we can’t get that wonderful 5 cylinder.
nsatoday it is probably the best small displacement diesel ever. I daily one over here in the uk! 😁
Aaron Maughan man o man whata dream disco 2 needs a new heart
Way cheaper to re-engine than buy a new rig. I re-engined my 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 for 10% of what a new one costs. This will be my LR4's next motor.

I'd love to put one these in a 2000 or so Dodge Dakota pickup!!!
Thank you Cummins!!
That'd be DOPE in my Land Cruiser!
Wow...A 2,8 Liter turbo diesel in an equivalent Ford 350 [Brazilian] pick up truck? You are right? That bogles the mind. LOL.
Great video.
About time!
Cummins should consider adding another repowwr engine to the lineup in the 3.8L to 3.9L range with 300hp and 500 foot pounds of torque would be a nice place to start.
I worked around that engine in early durability testing. Pretty cool... would love to know what the cost will be.
that would be PERFECT in my 1991 MJ!!!!
feel sorry for you in the States not drove a petrol 4x4 in ten years would have to learn how to drive one again
You put gasoline in it instead of diesel, duh....
Jason Carpp : And sometimes you don't really have the room for the larger engine.
So this will fit into smaller engine compartments.
Exactly! I'd buy a small truck if I could get it with a small displacement turbo diesel engine.
I Would Like One In My 1988 F-150 xlt 4.9 I-6. I Love My Truck!!!!!!! WDA.
I wonder if they are still coming with plastic oil pans? look up the dirt every day episode where it cracks like an egg when it hits a rock.
If you're going rock crawling without a skid plate you deserve whatever happens.
Zach Coldwell the plastic lover got crazy I drove a 60 series detroit had a plastic pan it hung 6 inches below the front axle was dumb
I see a duramax and powerstroke fanboy triggered by the fact their engines suck!
Cummins has a survey on the interest in offering the straight 6 and the V-8 on their site.. that’s the offerings I’d like...
That engine is great for a 1995 Chevy Caprice as long it needs an automatic diesel transmission as an option.
Just sold my 1989 dodge raider. Dammit!!!
Would i be able to put this 2.8 Cummins in a 2018 Chevy 1500 Silverado
I want one in my Crown Vic.
Me too.
Me too
Yay finally a motor like those in Australia! Sounds like its going to really take the market by storm depending on the cost. Any idea of the price for one of these engines?
Gary Cloud I believe they're going to be around $8k. Steve at Cummings has said to expect to be roughly the same cost as the LS Erod.
OK thx for the information.
$9000 for the US.
@Mike E buy a Foton Tunland wreck from the auctions.
I’ll put one of these into my focus st when the motor blows
we need these in Canada!!!
it is available in Canada
Need to take it on the trail and sand to see how it performs
I have a 1984 Ranger diesel 2.2 Perkins and its really low power but gets me really good mileage but if that engine dies this is the engine that I'm putting it in
Putting one in my 3rd gen 4Runner!
I'm eyeing one for my 3rd gen too. I wonder what it would take to make the stock gauges work and keep the sensors happy?
mandaloin looked like from the diagram they have wires for gauges in the wiring harness. Hard part will be figuring out the stock wire set up to match with the supplied Cummings harness.
These where made in Rocky Mount, NC!!!! RMEP!!!!!
That is sweet!
Putting one of these in my 240
Great video, I think I'm going to get my hands on one of these :-)
I just spoke with TORFAB about helping me find a diesel for 62 or 80 project and said we could do it, but parts may have to come from Africa or the Middle East if there were problems. This would solve all those issues . They give you any details about what might work for the rest of the driveline? Not much on Advance Adapters about it other than the one video.
Wave of the future.
Really sweet. Check out Diesel Toys out of San Antonio, Texas.
I want one so bad in my 97’ XJ, probably going to use a Mercedes om617 or TDI
Would love to swap this into my 1994 xj but now I'm going to Europe bringing my Jeep so might just find something over there.
Merben Cebrian they sold the XJs in Europe with 2.5TDs or could go with a LR TD5
Kit doesn't include an intercooler of course because every application is different, only has 161hp, 267 lbs torque and a wimpy 120amp alternator. fuel efficient though.
Well this is interesting.....but how will it bolt up on different auto transmissions or a stick shift box (bell housing)....??
damn that's awesome I wanna swap my tj now.
Hmm, my JK's engine isn't near worn out yet, but now I have another option. Heck, Columbus Ind. is close enough that I could just pick it up.
Great engine.
That is so getting in my ranger.
it has the same torque numbers as my v6. I would hope going to diesel to pull more
I wish Ford could offer a Cummins in their F250
6BT all the way.
Please make on for sprinter vans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guarantee you will sell a lot of crate motors
my 1990 yj 4.2 . garaged for 27 years. 70,000 miles no rust because I washed an wd40 motor, frame etc. I need a motor like that. LS1 is an optio n also.
