Casey Lee Williams taking over as the song writer and composer of the series is gonna be interesting. I’ll miss Jeff and what he has made over the years since RvB, but I’m excited to see what Casey can bring to the table.
Nothing bad happened to Jeff Williams, he just retired. His daughter took over and has been singing the OPs and most of the songs in RWBY for years.
Jeff Williams is the only writer in RWBY I still respect. The story if it followed the soundtrack would've been way different but better

Doubtful, she saw how that stuff would utterly wreck Qrow when he let himself go. Remember how hard she tried to get him to stop in previous volumes, to the point she was destroying his bottles and getting into quite heated arguments with him when he was wasted? I have a hard time beliving she would ever feel a desire to put herself in the same situation.

Ruby really has been through it all: deaths, disappointment, betrayals, small victories, big failures and immense fear of Salem. It seems like she’s going to be haunted by her past self: the optimistic girl who wanted to be a huntress and save people.

neo, is clearly going to be the mad hatter to this story. She's drinking tea, something the mad hatter enjoyed was "tea time" with his friends. Alice, or Alyx. In this case, was his only best friend after he lost his family to a fire, Neo and Alyx might resonate with each other. Or, what not. I'm sooooo excited for this whole volume

I think that the main struggle from Ruby and Jaune will be that they lost their identities.
Ruby is no long the cheerful and optimistic girl she was at the beggining. Everything she believed a Huntress should be is gone, Grimm are endless and have an unkillable leader, Huntsman lose their wills to fight like Raven and Lionheart, her and her teams actions didn't get them anything while in Atlas, and she just lost her friend AGAIN!
Jaune is no longer the doofus who wants to be a hero. What has he achieved through all his training? He couldn't save Pyrrha, he almost scared Oscar away, he isn't there for Ren and Nora right now, and he was forced to kill Penny!
I'm sure Jaune is the Flaming Knight. So maybe he made a deal with the devil (So to speak) and sell his identity to reach his ambition (to become an ideal knight) and the same offer will go to Ruby, to abandon her free will to become that which she wished to be, or her idealization of what she wished to be.
Something to add to this: They lost their weapons, extensions of themselves. Crescent Rose is somewhere in the island, lost. And Crocea Mors's blade was broken in the fight with Cinder.
Ruby is lost... Jaune is broken.
I agree, whatever happens to Ruby and Jaune this volume will change them forever.
Let's hope the others can get Ruby to stay who she is and not be this imposter she might turn into.

I also have a very particular theory as well. It's a little out there, but it could be plausible in a place like this.

I actually think Neo IS Alyx. Especially after the most recent episode. The opening definitely hints at them having a connection with Neo’s pose at the end of the mosaic that Ruby falls into Alyx being unconscious on the beach. Alyx may have gotten out of the ever after- at the cost of her identity and voice- only to be brought back. Which would be a very “ever-after” turn of events for someone wanting to get out.

@@cunningsmile4166 right. But we still don’t fully understand what a semblance is. Even when the main characters describe it to Jaune on how they unlocked them- some seem to appear out of nowhere, others believe it’s a reflection of them, or something happening to them. Clearly the ever after has some sort of connection to remnant. It’s not likely but it would be interesting if her overactive imagination is another form of “punishment” or “cost”. Losing your identity and voice and ironically having the ability to be anyone- or have any identity- but your own. The glass motif would fit nicely as her sense of self was “shattered” hence- she wasn’t the same girl anymore.
I like the symbolism of Ruby becoming more and more distant with her team during the segment of them following Alyx’s shadow

I mean is it really that surprising. Her entire thing was to try and save the world and help people, yet from Volume 3 onward all they've done is fail. Failed to save Pyrrha, failed to do anything substantial with Haven, Failed to Protect Atlas, lost both relics, failed to protect Penny, Failed to Stop Cinder and are now stuck in some wacky world with seemingly no way to escape.
That's a lot of shit to drop on a girl who isn't even done high school.

Casey and Martin really killed it with this song. They did such a good job evolving RWBY's sound and I think this is my favorite OP so far.
Just found out Jeff Williams has stepped back from doing music for RWBY as of V9 ( old news to most of you I’m sure ). I don’t blame him, he’s given us more than his fair share of awesome music. I’m looking forward to seeing Casey melt our faces off.
I think that, with Jeff's retirement, the OST might get into some metal elements we haven't heard before. Ok Goodnight is run by Casey and Martin, who are now the writers of the OST, and a lot of their stuff goes super heavy. Can't wait to see what it all brings!
@@ReminiscentIndustries I’m definitely excited because a lot of Rwbys music sounds the same and I sometimes can’t discern which ones are which when listening to a playlist. This opening is definitely a breath of fresh air until it gets to the middle where its very rwby esc but I can tell it’s gonna take a good direction 🙏

This is definitely a Ruby season. A person can only be optimistic for so long. I have a theory that the girl they're traveling with is probably either a fragment of Ruby or she's "Crescent Rose" in humanoid form.
I actually didn't think of it like that my theory was just somehow ruby changes into someone else like somehow she slowly becomes Alex (alyx) or whatever through the time there

My theory is either the original girl who fell through the world or something to do with penny, because if you look at her clothes and such she almost looks like a penny actually born from prof polendia

Neo might act out to be the mad hatter for wonderland as "The Mad Hatter is a small, impolite hatter who lives in perpetual tea-time. The Mad Hatter enjoys frustrating Alice."
in this case, Neo enjoys frustrating Ruby. They did have some rainbow tea stuff in the opening scene while sitting at an area with chairs.
The people in the background are most likely from neo's past aka Trivia Vanille.

I'm interested in everyone else's stories, but man, Jaune's is the one getting my attention the most, the time symbolism and the helmet wearing person that looks identical armor wise, it feels like some time shenanigans may have happened and he's been on his own a LOT longer than we might think.

not only that, the knight's armor looks rusted and weared out as well which further indicates a lot of time passage.
Not to mention in the opening said knight near the end is next to a big jackrabbit or rabbit petting it and it's fur looks a bit blondish and we all know jaunes old hoodie pumpkin Pete is a rabbit mascot thats on the hoodie

Ruby seems to have finally been broken. She was always the one to keep moving forward and try and cheer everyone up.
But now she's clearly losing her drive, while her team seems to still be trying. Curious to see where this goes
I'm sure she'll get her drive back, but she's gonna need to face her inner demons first.

Yang will likely remind Ruby that, in the end, Salem is no different from the Grimm. The Grimm keep coming back to destroy them again and again, but that hasn't stopped huntsmen from cutting them down and thwarting their plans in order to protect the kingdoms, their people, and those they love. Why should that be any different from Salem? Yang could also remind Ruby about all those fairytales involved the heroes never giving up, despite going up against impossible odds and getting knocked down again and again, because there are people that needed to be saved. The others could go into detail about how they learned from their mistakes, like how Blake conquered her tendency to run away, how Yang learned her limits and overcame her PTSD, and how Weiss became an overall better person after her time in Beacon. They'll have Ruby learn from her mistakes, overcome her demons and fears, and remember that she doesn't need to do this alone.
Most importantly, they'll remind her of that little silver light of hope that got them this far in the first place, and never stopped moving forward.

@@gohanmoreno7 No, I'm completely serious. Even us native English speakers can't understand half the lyrics until we see them written down. Casey is an excellent singer in most regards, but she has a lot of trouble enunciating the lyrics while singing.

Jaune with the clocks was a GENIUS foreshadowing, having him in without spoiling anything and subtle enough to miss if you aren't looking for it. Truly a rwby signature specialty.

I love the idea that this season is focused only on 6 characters, this is going to give the season a different touch to the series in general, especially since they are trapped in another dimension.

Watching Casey go from the TWELVE YEAR OLD that was singing her dads score for a great up and coming indi series, to a COMPOSER for a MAJOR crunchyroll dub is WILD, you can feel the difference in Casey’s comps vs Her dads and it’s not a bad thing!? The chords don’t have the same feeling as her dads used to, Jeff has this “pulse” that you feel in all of his music, but she definitely is her fathers daughter you can definitely hear similarities lyrically, and I’m just SO excited to see which direction this album (and volume) goes in, I’m just so happy to see that RWBY survived so many changes, Monty dying, rooster teeth becoming a more independent studio canceling their VRV contract (or however that went down), to now Jeff retiring!? Every volume I was going through the same kind of Hell team rwby was going through (when the series first aired I was literally fresh out of an urban warzone and was in the hospital healing, and trying to come to grips with friends I’d been looking forward to helping me raise kids no longer being alive), ironically when things were getting better for them things got better for me and when things got worse again they ironically got worse for me too, I’ve finally found some real happiness and stability only for my girls to be at their lowest point, and fresh out of ANOTHER major loss. I am just so excited, thank you crunchyroll and RT for still allowing us to watch rwby in an easily accessible setting I thought I was gonna have to pay for a WHOLE OTHER streaming service to watch this volume 😫

I really hope Neo gets a big role in this story and not become a pawn like with cinder. It would be a good character development because (as we know from the novels) she always did what others told her: her parents, principal, Roman, Cinder. Wish it was different now.

Roman is dead and she knows Salem has two relics and that much closer in getting the other two. Why bother going back to Remnant where she can stay here and have fun and be herself in the ever after
@@piesezpetersburga7254 Something tells me that Neo will stay in Wonderland. Her semblance matches the environment perfectly (fairytales and illusions, not everything is as it seems, etc.), and IMO her character hasn't done anything significant besides being Torchwick's sidekick, stealing a relic (only to have it/the credit snatched by Cinder), and acting as a small obstacle for RWBY and JNPR. Maybe she'll have development in the form of letting go of her hatred for Ruby over Torchwick's death and sacrificing herself so RWBY + Jaune can leave.

Bro, this opening is fire. Also, Ruby and Jaune man... They going through it this volume, they've been going through it since previous volumes.
Ok so at 0:23 to 0:35 everyone is moving forward and at their atlas outfits their signature emblems however Ruby’s goes from Vol.1-3 smiling to Vol.4-6 frowning to Vol.7-9 looking away with her emblem representing a Rose begins to wither the more she grows finally fading now the rose symbolizes beauty and love mainly focusing on the love part a withering rose represents that love is gone so Ruby has the chance of giving up on being a hero and at this point just wants to survive it’s a theory and a crazy one at that but hey it popped up in my mind.

I hope Ruby recovers her trauma and depression in this volume. I feel really bad for her after everything has happen.
That's probably the point of this volume. Her finally facing all her fears and becoming stronger for it.
It's like with Luffy after Ace died or like Naruto when Jiyrara died well pretty much some of the main protagonist got traumatized after someone close got killed

I keep going back saying "this time it must be better, right?" only to be greeted by the most generic OP possible (talking about the visual composition, not music) that somehow still manages to have so many awkward shots after them "getting used to the new software" for 7 years, which was the excuse of fanboys back then for the awkwardness.

@@TheTsuyuki I agree. I for one am so unenthused by this opening and RWBY in general anymore. I'm happy for people that can still enjoy it, but don't understand how they do. I'll binge the volume once its over cuz I'm 8 deep at this point, but any shred of love I had left for the show died last season...such a shame.
To clarify...the song is fine, not my favorite of the openings but still good. its the general story-line that's being teased that I'm board with before it even begins.
Crazy to think that casey is 24 now and you can notice the difference in her voice if you compare her vocals from v1/2 and now

That scene with Jaune and the clocks make a lot more sense after episode 5.
The cat is actually evil and takes possesion of Neo's body after Neo makes Ruby drink a poisonous tea that will k--- Ruby and descend her in the tree for a new "role" getting Neo's revenge and Ruby's self harm. That's the spoiler for you for Volume 9, Episode 8!
Just noticed how evrey time a page turned ruby looks more and more depressed
Casey's voice has definitely grown since seasons 1-3. I'm glad they've been utilizing her lower range, but seems like her high notes have been sounding much less strained

0:23 All the members of team Rwby start with their older outfits in the back and as they progress they get closer and their attires change to the actual ones.
Ruby on the other hand starts closer with her old looks and gets further back as she reaches her current state until she is in the background barely noticeable in her emblem.

I strongly feel Ruby and Jaune are being deliberately paralleled against each other this volume. Just from this theme song we can see that both are absolutely destroyed emotionally, they are the only ones crying and seem far more crestfallen than the other characters here.
It makes sense though as Ruby and Jaune have paralleled each other since the beginning. They are foil characters and often go through the same emotional beats. Their experiences are also so similar to the point where when Jaune has a problem, Ruby is the one who empathizes and advises him because she faced a similar problem. The vis versa also occurs when Jaune faces the problem first and later advises Ruby.
I'm interested to see where this will go. RWBY has always aspired to be a fairy tale so my best guess is that Ruby and Jaune will be put thought the gauntlet this volume but will both regain their hope and determination by its end. No doubt they will reach this conclusion together after seeing what the other has become as they find strength in themselves by first reaffirming the strength in each other.
1:08 in the intro it shows ruby smiling freakishly and then it says in the song "I gotta let go I can't lose my mind inside a world full of lies!"it said something like that what if somewhere in the volume ruby loses her mind

This is a pretty interesting turn in the shows direction. Neo becoming one of the main bads of the season instead of being a lackey, all the obvious alice in wonderland references, and especially this new character who is clearly based off Alice herself. And I'm hoping they shed some light on what'll happen to everyone else under Winter's protection

I know vol 1 and 2 openings are classic, but vol 9 opening is just such a banger. Absolutely beautiful.
I feel really worried about Ruby in this one like I don't really look into character flaws that much but if there is one thing I know, it's that you shouldn't bottle up your feelings like I get that Ruby wants to be the hero of this tale but being a hero means taking responsibility for other people even if you tend to bear all the world's problems on your shoulders, there's nothing wrong with letting it all out to someone close to you even if you are bottling everything up.
I hope Ruby gets the support that she needs in this volume like Weiss went from being a know-it-all from a wealthy family to someone who considers her teammates a second family while for Yang, her goal of finding her birth mother was a success and despite her losing her right arm to Adam, she found a way to not let her anger get the best of her and pushed through her PTSD when the rematch came between her and Adam. Last but not least we have Blake, someone who was anti-social at first and wanted to keep her past as a former White Fang member a secret until it came back to haunt her at the Fall of Beacon and she ran away without telling anyone but with the help of her parents and Sun, she has finally let go of her past even after her and Yang's final battle with Adam, she was done running away from her problems. Now, I really hope that Ruby does the same here and when it comes, she's got her teammates and her allies to support her.

I liked how it seemed like they learned their lesson from volume 7 about putting spoiler in the new openings so they tried to hide the new girls' identity.
Only for them to be like, "Oh wait no one's going to know who the hell this is anyway so it doesn't matter."
I actually love when they put subtle spoilers in the intro, or ones that require some puzzling, it makes it so much interesting to speculate. I have a feeling there’s a couple in this into too, like who is falling from the sky at 0:18 (might be Weiss and Blake but colors don’t quite match up), or what the thing in the R is being zoomed in on at 0:21

Since nobody brought this up: I think at @0:58 when that caterpillar blew that smoke from the hookah is how ruby talks with her younger self from the trailer. The smoke sent her on a trip to find herself.

This opening really captures how the series has beaten the optimism out of Ruby. While everyone else around her have grown and become more confident, Ruby's confidence has been slowly deteriorating since Pyrrah's death. I'm predicting she and Jaune will probably grow closer this season and build each other back up.

I'm kind of expecting this volume to be the final swift blow to Ruby's optimism (and seemingly Jaune's too), a final tragic breaking point before we finally get our upswing that's been waiting ever since the last few episodes of volume 7
For how dark and depressing the show gets some times, there's always been times where we get our lighter tone again. Volume 3 got really dark at the end with volume 4 balacning the aftermath and giving us some room to breath, before volume 5 gave us a triumph again, as the opening for that volume said "Back to the fairy tale".
Volume 6 gave us a big hit of dread up until the end when we get some real hope back and resolution to big weights that some of our characters had been carrying since volume 3 (or even earlier).
Volume 7 was mostly upbeat until the last few episodes where we took a nose dive into "Oh crap, this is really bad." Arguably having our characters in the worst spot they'd ever been in up to that point in the show. Volume 8 slowly got worse and worse with even the few successess getting no time to be celebrated, all the way until the end of the volume where we'd gotten through all the bad stuff at the beginning of the volume, only to have more horribleness set up for where we are now.
So now we're at volume 9, after over a full volume of harsh conditions, big loses, depressing situations, and no real plan for how we're actually going to resolve the story-long problems and not even knowing if ANYTHING accomplished in the last volume even worked in the long run, I think this volume is going to have most of our characters showing their development and moving forward despite the hardship, while the two who started this series as their respective team leaders and 2 of our most innoccently optimistic characters have finally gone so downhill that they're going to break.
Jaune's growth up to this point is likely going to be blocked and by the time we find him I expect he'll be fully broken, Ruby is probably going to be taking a downswing for a while this volume before fully breaking. Both of them having fallen so far from who they wanted to be and believing they completely failed. Haunted by their past, both who they used to be and what's happened desipte their best efforts, and feeling as though there's no hope for the world and people they just wanted to help.
Then towards the end, we'll finally get a win. Maybe not a huge one, but one that feels important, impactful. Whether that's a new plan to beat Salem, redeeming Neo and turning her to their side, escaping this other world to find the people of Atlas are still safe and their friends alll alive, whatever it is this mixed with the support of the people around them will finally help both Jaune and Ruby (or at least 1 of them, probably Ruby) to recover, grow, and keep moving with a more mature optimism than they once had.
Most of that I really think will happen, however Jaune scares me a lot right now. We're at a point where Nora and Ren could handle loosing another teammate from a narrative standpoint, I don't really expect him to die as much as I worry he's going to stay in this new world. I doubt it, but RWBY has surprised me multiple times before as recently as volume 8. And team JNPR has already lost a team member with their title being in flux depending on who they're with, with Emerald, Oscar, and Winter all without a team to really belong to consistently, it wouldn't surprise me to see 2 of them joining Nora and Ren to make a new team at least for a bit (I was already expecting team ORNJ to become official back when it was just Oscar joining, and when Emerald switched sides I expected her to join JNR, still do)
If he decides there's not enough for him back in Remnant, and there's need for his help in this other world, it could be a real possiblity that this is our last volume with Jaune. It would mean he never gets to have a final facedown with Cinder yes, it would mean he never reunites with Nora and Ren yes, it would mean his family probably never gets to know what happens to him yes, it would mean we never get to see him at his full stride as a team leader again yes.
But could it work? Honestly I think so. I can see Jaune and Ruby hugging and saying goodbye with Jaune making Ruby promise to "Look after them" or "Avenge Phyraa for me", something along those lines. Fully believing he's more needed in this new world, that no one else can do what he can for it. I can see it happening with proper build-up and without loosing too much potential, and that worries me.

@@ReiseLukas- expect her lost her trying to maintain hope, her learning how the world is and her striving to be the hunter that her mother was and all her losses she been growing. Some growth is bad and some are good. What happens here we might see her breakdown just like back in Vol.8 but only worst and I’m prying that that the other see the signs and hope she doesn’t end up like Ironwood thinking of shouldering all the burden on her because she’s not the one to blame or anyone of the kids.

It only took about 90% for the main character to start an actual character arc, and even then we dobt know that because the opening showing one thing and the show showing another has happened before
It took me a few rewatches to notice this; in the first sequence of team RWBY evolving as they walk, all 3 move forward as they change outfits, but Ruby doesn't just appear at the back at the end, she slows down and goes further back. Man.

Just watched the full season today and man, I did not realize how dark this season really was like maaan. It was definitely a good one and I feel like we'll be back on track with how RWBY originally felt.
