- We make the quick trip from Amsterdam to Castle De Haar, just outside of Utrecht. The biggest castle in all of The Netherlands is both beautiful, and of course… huge!
Watch as we explore many of the 200+ rooms of this incredible site of Dutch history. Also, Nate has a nemesis (loud lady), and makes a fried (chill deer).

✼ ABOUT US ✼
We are Nate and Katrina, two American expats living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see!
We balance a busy career and grad school while we explore Europe and beyond. We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.
We probably won’t look or sound like many other travel vlogs out there! We really want to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!

very nice to wacht! I like! Was there several years ago! A time to stay for a longer time! Very interesting
Thanks for watching!
I spent Christmas 1960 in that castle as a young kid. I remember there was an electric toy train that occupied a whole room.
My mother slept in a baldachin bed.
Very impressive with the snow
too much tongue-in-cheek sarcasm from that couple however
Thanks for watching!
They miss the noise of air conditioning or a fan, so they do not feel at home in the castle!!😂😂
Haha, you might be right! Thanks for watching!
Lol! The king of Florida! Had me laughing the entire time! Thanks for such a fun video. Just subbed!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the sub, we really appreciate it!
The Dutch population actually 'grew' by 20 cm on average in the last 200 years vs 6 cm in the US in that same time frame.
Cool! Thanks for the info and for watching!
Love it! I love architecture. 😊
Us, too! It’s pretty impressive!

Castle De Haar has not much to do with a true castle. It was build in the late 19th century by the same architect of the Amsterdam Centraal Station and the Rijks Museum.
That's not very precise. As you can see in the timeline featured at 4:14 , the original castle was built in the late 14th century.
It is true that by the time Pierre Cuypers restored it in the late 19th century the castle was in ruins. But he did preserve small parts of the original structure, and the general architecture of the exterior (although he did add some elements of his own, thus the vague resemblance with some of his other works).
I believe Cuypers also extended the structure of the main castle. And the châtelet (the structure that is detached and connected by a bridge) was completely new, and designed by Cuypers' son Joseph.
Thanks for clarifying! We still think it's pretty impressive no matter when it was built. Hope you both enjoyed the video!
A true castle had it's function(s) in it's day and age (military, protecting royals from their own people, prison and a home), this was only intended as a home. It's Cuypers and the family van der Haar's impression of what it once was. Historically incorrect, but architecture pleasing to the eye.
Het past in de traditie van de Romantiek. In heel Europa zijn er van dergelijke kastelen: Neu Schwanstein, (stamslot) Burg Hohenzollern, enz.
It’s like Hogwarts!
It kind of does! Thanks for watching!
Piękny zamek!Jaka historia!Ile pracy!Roboty!Marek.Szczesc Boze
Basically the castle was rebuild in the early 1900s from a ruin, only a few remaining walls of the old castle.
We did learn that while we were there. It’s still very impressive to see in person! Thanks for watching!
I loved ´ don’t touch stuff’´
Haha, just calling it like we see it! Thanks for watching!

Awesome video! At 1:55 you talk about the moat and how it doesn't surround the whole castle. Well... you are wrong. The moat does surround the *main* castle. The structure you are standing in front of is the châtelet, an extension that is detached from the main castle.
The châtelet is connected by the bridge you used to exit the main castle at 14:04 and it was *not* part of the original castle. It was designed by Joseph Cuypers, son of Pierre, the architect that directed/designed the restoration in the late 19th century,
You're right! Our bad! At least now we know that the castle can be protected from all angles. ;) Thank you for watching!
Fun vlog, why dont you have 100k subs? Well I subscribed. Have you been to hearst castle in cali?
We keep wondering the same thing… 🤔 Thank you for subscribing - it really helps us out! We’ve driven past Hearst Castle but never made the stop! Maybe when we go back to visit family in California we will need to add it to our list!
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld you will get to 100k surely, with this content!
You two probably don't notice it yourself or you've been living in Amsterdam for too long hahah but you're already starting to get the mentality of a Dutch person hahaha
Haha, we definitely had this mentality living in the states, maybe it’s just come out more since moving to Amsterdam! Thanks for watching!

Big Country
Thanks for the clarification! We were too lazy to look up his filmography while we were at the castle. 🤣
We will have to add these to our movie list! Thanks for the info and for watching!

Got to say, you're very down to earth, and a bit sarcastic as well.
(You got Dutch herritage?)
And you fit in the downplaying by a lot of Dutch themselves since they regard this castle as not being very 'historic'..
Yet slowly it is getting more and more attention being one of the highlights
of late neo-gothic architecture of toilets....
Additional to that,
the architecture in and outside is spledid ! If one has a non snobbish eye for it.
🎉
Extremely sarcastic but no Dutch heritage for either of us (that we know of)! The castle is absolutely stunning from inside and out. And the gardens surrounding the castle are gorgeous as well! Thanks for watching!
😉😊
Thanks for watching!
thats what she sed
I’m so glad that someone said it so that so we didn’t have to! 😂
Still not clear about the woman in the yellow skirt in relation to the fireplaces. Did something happen? ;o)
Haha, I don’t think we are too sure about the relation either. 😂 Hope you were entertained, though! Thanks for watching!
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld Guess I was. It kind of stuck with me :o).

Thanks for watching!
A big bonus of owning a castle is that from the tower you can taunt an Anglosaxon king. In French. Sort of.

How much money did they steal to build castles and cities in the Netherlands?
We don't know. How much was it? :) Thanks for watching!

Its a faaaaaaaakeeeee
About the car taking off and the added special effects. That must be the dumbest, stupidest, most nonsensical thing youve done so far. Added absolutely nothing to the vlog, id even say made it worse. That said, ive watched it over 20 times now and loved it!
This makes Nate very happy that somebody appreciated his extra special edit that he learned how to do for this video. :) We are glad that you enjoyed it!
