    Wow 250 charge cycles and you've now got a battery only putting out 60% of ehat it did new. I didn't realize these power tool batteries degraded that fast. Did they list the degradation rate for the first gen? And I wonder hoe it compares to something like a Dewalt XR battery. Considering batteries are often times more expensive than the tools they power, this could be a very important factor in choosing a power tool line. Good to see Kobalt at least went with a reputable brand name for their cells. Thanks for the review.

    I want the new 24v 4.0 battery. With just 6 of the newer 21700 cells. The tool guy at Lowes has no idea what I am talking about with the new 2nd battery. The pic on the Lowes site is of the older battery with 12 cells, its black and blue. The new one is all black. I can order this battery, but not sure if it will be the new gen battery that shows up.

  • @fun_ghoul

    WRT amperage rating: They aren't saying that the cells will push more current at higher temperature -- though they would, for as long as they live -- but that it's allowable _only_ at lower temperatures! That is, 35A max for packs with no thermal protection, or 45A for packs that cut off at 80°C. You obviously wouldn't want to design a pack that will run at that level continuously, but for ebikes as an example, it may well be desirable for short bursts that wouldn't actually push the pack to anywhere near 80°C. My 36V battery (4x Ryobi 9Ah packs) doesn't get nearly that high, but...definitely warm to the touch after my usual 25 km jaunt!

    • @vuaeco
      @vuaeco  4 роки тому

      Warmer cells perform better. Tesla heats up their battery pack before a "launch" for more performance. But pushing it at 80C is gonna just kill it, and quick.

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 4 роки тому

      @@vuaeco Agreed on both counts, but as I said, the 80C cutoff would be designed into a pack that isn't normally expected to operate at that temperature, thus allowing 45A for short bursts. I presume the Tesla arrangement also has such provisions, to extend battery life/reduce warranty claims.

  • @fun_ghoul
    @fun_ghoul 4 роки тому +2

    Cycle life is T E R R I B L E! Normal spec sheets usually list the # of cycles to either 90% or 80% capacity, and they all use the same criteria (charge to 4.2V and discharge to 2.5V @ 25°C), so...yeah. Ouf.

      Well, maybe they finally admit and tell you the truth! :D

  • @daishi5571
    @daishi5571 4 роки тому

    With reduced battery count there is less to go wrong, so better reliability. When/if they release an 8 Ah the newer cells will have a bigger lead. I looked up the individual cell weight for the 18650 - 45g vs 21700 - 69g so multiply that by by the cell count 8Ah 18650 = 20x45 = 900g (plus any additional hardware to link this many cells plus additional hardware for load balancing) vs 21700 10x69 = 690g (with less links and complexity so should also equate into better reliability, plus packaging will be considerably smaller)

  • @brucey5585
    @brucey5585 2 роки тому

    Your better off with having more cells. The bms have a 30amp limit that is why your load test is only at 30 amp for both battery. The double cell should be able to pull 40 amp max.

It powers on with just the + and - terminals connected, but errors out after a few seconds. Not sure if the middle kobalt terminal is just a thermistor I can imitate or some active component that would be harder. I don't have any kobalt batteries to test but would love if you had any insight. Thx.

      Looks like the orange may be Highstar brand battery cells based on this video. I think they are the same battery cell brand used in Walmart's Hyper Tough brand power tool batteries. So, I think it's actually a downgrade, but my thought is merely an assumption, not fact.

    They should have made it "full length" so the pack could be thinner, IMO. It's like they just didn't want to change their packaging line at the plant or something...
    EDIT: Having now watched the WHOLE video, I will grudgingly admit that Lowe's made the right decision on packaging vs. cycle life. I don't use tools as hard as that, but they're obviously mostly concerned about "power users" (READ: dissatisfied contractors wanting warranty replacements)!
