Great info Steve! I’m going to keep an eye out in the garden this year, and try to figure out what flies and what bees we have. Also wanted to check in and say Hi- I haven’t chatted with you for a few weeks! I’m feeling like spring is right around the corner! 😉👍👍👍
Wow. Thank you for this video! I have one of these hovering around my front deck and ran inside because I thought it was a wasp. I'm allergic to bees, so good to know this guy is safe. Great video!
Another epic presentation Steve 👍🏻
Thanks Neil, I appreciate your support mate.

Hey Steve... some nice footage of hoverflies there....if I hadn't seen this video I would have just thought they were wasps! Ohhh they like our sweat 🤭🤭🤭
I hope to grow lots of calendula so hopefully they will visit my garden!
They're fascinating little creatures, I drive my wife mad telling her all about them and when we walk the dog, I keep stopping and pointing them out to her lol

I'm pretty lucky, I get a lot of hoverflies visit my garden, and they do a good job with the pollinating, although there's room for improvement with the aphid bashing.

I've been seeing some flying insects hovering around the potatoes and there no flowers and they look exactly like one in your video. I assumed it was a pest laying eggs on the potato leaves. I haven't sprayed the potatoes with anything and I don't see any leaf damage yet. I had a beautiful butterfly hovering around the citrus leaves and I took a closer look and the thing was laying eggs on the leaves. When they hatched they penetrated the leaves and messed up quite a few of them. I understand from researching that the larva is called a leaf miner.
I reckon I'll have to see what the little hovering flies around the potatoes are doing, being sceptical I'm not expecting anything good from them lol. Good video Steve and thanks for sharing. All the best to you and the family, stay safe and God bless.
Mary
That's the trouble Mary, a lot of these insects all look the same, it's hard to tell the good guys from the bad lol
I hope the ones around your potatoes are beneficial and not destructive.
Shame about your citrus, butterflies are pretty but their young can cause problems for us gardeners.
I hope you and yours are all well
Enjoy the rest of your week

These buggers are neat Steve, I remember finding that one in the old video of mine and had no clue what the heck it was until you told me mate :) . Mine are so small here though but so interesting to watch. I have another video of one I need to release sometime. Very awesome info man, I wonder if thats why that one was buzzing me that time cause of my hands being sweaty lol. As gross as that sounds it makes sense after watching your video. Cool stuff mate thank you for the knowledge again! I hope you all are well my friend and having a great week so far
It probably was because of the sweat mate, I learnt so much about these little guys researching for this video and the blog post too.
They're so interesting, and getting the clips of their young hatching was a bonus.
I hope you and the Mrs. are ok mate.
Enjoy the rest of your week

@@stevesgrowingspace I am starting to think thats probably what it was too mate after watching your informative video! I always learn something here my friend. We are ok man, I hope you guys are as well! The ones you get there look a lot bigger then the tiny ones I see here. You have a great week too my friend
@@WaltRevenJr Cheers mate, there ain't too many here now, it's wet cold and windy so they've all gone now.
@@stevesgrowingspace Our nights are cold, still crazy warm during the daytime though its weird. I haven't been seeing anything but wasps when it warms up, occasional house flies lol. Cheers my friend
@@WaltRevenJr I woke up to a cold but dry day so far today mate, but no insects.
I reckon they've flown away to somewhere warmer or hibernated lol
Like 1 steve I havent got them to do my orange flower pollination and my hydroponic bottle gourds 😁 nice video tho interesting thankyou for sharing with us 👍
