This looks like a very interesting project! A few questions: 1. Won't this smell? Should the lagoon be placed in an area away from people who might object? 2. Doesn't this also provide breeding for mosquito larvae? And you can't use Bt dunks to mitigate that, because that would also kill the fly larvae, right? 3. I'm in North America, where the Drone fly, Eristalis tenax is fairly common. Are there other species here of rat-tailed maggots that would benefit from this lagoon? Thank you!
The fruits should be fine in there. Any decaying material will encourage hoverflies to the habitat, so that sounds like an interesting experiment! It’s best to place the hoverfly lagoon in a shady spot so the water doesn’t evaporate out too quickly.

I added some watermelon, banana peel, and an apple under the grass cuttings.Should I remove the fruits ?
