Thank you for the video! My cataplexy would prevent me from doing something like this. So for those that would not be able to it’s good to hear someone talk about it and explain it first hand

You explained it perfectly. I’ve had Cataplexy my whole life but didn’t know that’s why it was until I was well in my 40s
Now I know, I’m like that explains everything

I have severe Cataplexy from enjoying things, including Cata-gasms :(
I don't get it from laughing though... What a strange disease. Thanks for sharing; we need more awareness

Thanks for making this video! I'm currently going through the diagnostic process for narcolepsy (just did my sleep studies). My somnologist thinks I have type 1, but I wasn't convinced because I've never had the severe full body attacks that get the most awareness. Now hearing more people's experiences I can see similarities to my own experiences.
Thank you for mentioning orgasms as a trigger, because I absolutely have that too -- I didn't connect that as cataplexy until I heard you say it. I just thought that meant it was really good. 😂😂😂

I love hearing that this helped!!!! Good luck on your journey, it can be a process sometimes. I definitely recommend that you join the Facebook groups I linked, that was how I learned about the orgasm cataplexy as well. I used to think I was the only one. LOL My husband is definitely flattered when it happens lol

Thank you for telling all of this, I seriously think I’ve had narcolepsy my entire life, my parents just always said I needed extra sleep because I was born prematurely but I get sleep attacks and start to fall asleep standing up at my desk, and now that you told me some mild symptoms I think I have cataplexy, I’ll have to get tested at some point. When my boyfriend tickles me it never fails I always end up on the ground it’s not because I fainted or anything and I can still move but I get very weak. Even laughing I’ll be trying to grab and squeeze his hand and I just can’t, and there’s been many times where I can not get up to walk after sex, I have wait a few minutes before I can physically get up if I don’t fall asleep first lol but I’ve always had trouble with sleeping to much and falling asleep in classes and at work. I get bad sleep paralysis falling asleep and waking up depending on how good my sleep schedule is and how stressed I am, but I use to get it a lot more when I was younger. I use to get sleep paralysis in class when I’d fall asleep even. Idk I really think I have it I just hope if I go they can diagnose it.

That sounds very similar to me!!!! It's weird some of the symptoms and on average it takes people years to find a diagnosis. I hope you find relief! I will be posting soon about some "remedies" I use to help with symptoms if you're interested :)

My mom said that I was always sleeping and I’m inclined to believe her because I don’t remember much of my childhood. I started staying awake after drinking coffee but the older I get the less it works

I have some every once in a while where I feel myself falling and I have a feeling like "oh shit" that seems suddenly so all encompassing that I can't move to catch myself and I fall but most times it's like I can't look at screens in the dark or else I'll suddenly freeze and it's like my brains saying "come on just move, I know you can." but my arms and face and fingers just freeze and I can't move and half the time my head drops very suddenly (which may be separate seizure activity, I'm not sure yet) but my cataplexy leads immediately to sleep if I'm stressed by excessive intake of information, like reading or hearing a lot of info at once.

❤ hey, thanks for sharing your experience… I just found out the wierd thing that happens to me is cataplexy… I thought it was an overkill of bliss in the body that shuts down my nerveous system..

Hi. Thanks for the information. I hope you don't mind answering a few questions
Does menstruation have any impact on your symptoms?
Have the episodes marched upwards or downwards, in terms of severity, over the years?
Are there premonitory feelings that warn you it's about to happen?

    • @mynarcolepticlife9187

Hi! Thanks for your questions, I'd love to help out!
Menstruation has a HUGE impact, albeit indirectly. Hormone changes around menstruation drastically changes my sleep patterns, a change in sleep patterns often makes cataplexy worse.
As for clues it's about to happen, knowing my triggers is a big part of it. Some people feel sort of a 'tingling' in the back of their neck. For me, my lips feel weird right before or my vision goes a little tunnely for a split second. My cataplexy is small and normally a small attack happens before a larger one (shoulders droop, face is slack, etc.)

I’m getting diagnosed for narcolepsy but I first started having cataplexy a lot before the constant sleep attacks.
First it feels like my hands go weak and I drop things a lot. I’m aware of my surroundings, and I can talk, but my hands are really weak and I can’t hold things and it feels weird like I can’t close my hands.
Other times in public my legs will feel like that too and my knees start to buckle so it’s like trying to hold in the urge to regurgitate. I have to rush to a seat and if I don’t I collapse on the floor. I have to wait it out a bit and for me I have a hard time knowing when it goes away.
My eyelids sometimes drop and my head and shoulders and I need to rest beside something or else my head will just suddenly drop and it’s really heavy and hard to pick up. I usually feel disoriented and extremely tired when these happen and I get them now like 5-20 times a day.
And extreme fear will give me a full body collapse where I’ll feel weak all over except I’m fully aware of everything.
They last from seconds to minutes but they can go back to back
