What a great reaction. Fawlty Towers was an iconic 70's comedy show. You have a great memory to analysis all your reactions at the end of each one, and you also have superb English. Amazing!
This week's guest star is the mighty Bernard Cribbins (who passed away recently - almost resulting in a day of national mourning in the UK), who successive generations saw in decades of comedy pictures, novelty songs and as a storyteller on children's TV. A world away, in many respects, from the distinctly middle-class and highly-educated trappings John Cleese started out in, I think he absolutely makes this episode. And Cleese, ever generous about the rest of the cast, observes as much on the DVD commentary for this instalment.
Torquay is a small seaside resort on the South West coast of England. More upmarket than some and a good base for exploring that part of the UK. Like most it has seen better days, as the tourist trade is a shadow of what it was before the era of cheap flights led the majority of Brits to hoilday abroad where better weather (and cheaper booze) can be had.
I've watched this show a MILLION times since I was young, but I only just noticed that when Basil rips up the omelette, the Major starts EATING it! Brilliant! Love your reactions, stay cool matey x
If you go around many tourist areas a lot of the hotels have been built after the 1970s, prior to this the backbone of the tourist industry was guest houses, small hotels and Pensione. These were not parts of chains or franchises and the owners had no management contract or operating manual to follow and so they could pretty much make up the rules as they went along. The owners were often older and grew up before the war when people were concerned with personal morality and how things looked were very important. Guest houses with curfews, no guests of the opposite sex in the room and no unmarried guests sharing a room were quite common. Gay couples and non white guests would have to be careful to pick welcoming hotels because not all of them wanted their money.
