geologist speaking with a few nerdy things to add to this story:
1: the stuff that initially buried pompeii is called a welded tuff or ignimbrite, it differs from pumice in that it originates from an ash-flow that hugs the terrain as it flows down the volcanic slopes. Ignimbrite contains lots of sharp fragments of rock and lava of all different sizes making it look like a concrete with a gravel aggregate. Only the fragments typically have sharp edges and can easily get up to the size of a refrigerator or a car.
2: Pumice is usually created in an ash-fall, typically a column of ash gets expelled from a volcano, rises into the stratosphere and then loses momentum as it cools and collapses vertically, the fine ash particles stick together much the same as snow.
3: scoria is very different from both of these. Typically these are made from basaltic lava that is degassing. Bubbles are formed in the lava much the same as when you open a bottle of coke.

I transferred baby plants from soil into Lechuza pon by removing all the soil (I did it super carefully, it took me forever, and then I put the plants roots into water for about 10 min to remove the last bits). I didn´t damage almost any roots - but it takes a lot of time. Then for several months I watered the plants as normally from the top until the plant slowly adjusted it (it took me about 3 months, but could be more). I also put the pot on lecca with a little bit of water (water not reaching the pot) and the plant pushed its roots towards the water and it helped the process I think. I did it on baby aglaonema and alocasia silver dragon - they are healthy and grew nice new leaves. Lost only one oldest bottom leaf on aglaonema and none on alocasia. It works but takes time and patience. I used pon in self-watering system

Part 2 of earlier comment if you inoculate pumice bury it in soil it will grow a colony of beneficial bacteria and fungi all around it.in good soil you can dig up a piece and it will be covered with fungi looks like its covered with spider web this is very beneficial and it doesn't break down like perlite this is also why they discovered better plant growth on soil with pumice on top great videos 👍
I'm not an expert. I just think that whatever 'inside' depends on what I will grow (root type, heavy feeder plants or not, what size/how does pot keep the water (if I'm using container) etc. I really like this discussion. Please keep it on 🙏
Does it matter what is the size of individual pumice rocks? I typically see them listed at different sizes with largest usually around 3/8” (~10mm)
You have me completely sold on the pumice. In fact I have the need to repot from pumice to pumice but cannot find any "Tips and Tricks" video.....not even one covering Pon to Pon. Is there any tips or things I should watch out for when repotting begins this spring??
Are there any type of plants that are not recommended for pumice? For example I have a lot of African violets and bottom water.

Hello I would like to comment but it's a little off topic.I am a organic soil only Gardner medical herbs and vegetables I love pumice in soil it does hold on to beneficial bacteria and fungi which contains nutrients and water but you have to inoculate it before use.one square inch of biochar is equal to 100 meters of surface area incredible pumice is not as pourus but 2 big hand fillip of pumice

Hi from the U K I want to use pumice as the substrate to grow lithops do I need to soak in fertilizer before planting.
Can you help and tell in which video they talk about measuring PH when using pumice? It's essential on semi-hydroponics but I feel like maybe it's not necessary in their method with puting plant to pumice without removing soil? Unfortunately I cannot find SPG adressing this topic.
can a plant be overwatered if its completely only in pumice or similar mineral substrate?
Yes it can. Roots don't rot because of water but because of too much moisture. Leca, pumice, perlite, vermiculite, lava rock still hold a lot of moisture and if you water a plant too often and don't let the roots dry a bit, it will still rot. Roots can acclimate to this kind of moisture, but they must do so gradually. I would recommend to water as if in soil for the first month at least and then introduce a small reservoir of water (or a self-watering system). It's best to use transparent pots for this and keep a constant eye on those roots in the beginning. If they start to develop brownish tips, that's rot.

question, what is your opinion on aeration of the soil? pumice, pumice with soil, or any combination of media and the need to get air to the roots can be done br aeration by poking holes through the soil with a bambo stick or other small poker. love your videos, I learn a lot and thanks.
Will pumice prevent gnats?
I converted my 30 plants with lechuza pon (100% mineral substrate) and I confirm that I have definitely eradicated the fungus gnats.
@@benoitrosset7400 I have most of my orchids in leca and my houseplants in diy pon or leca. Still seeing a few gnats but have a few more to repot. I am worried about killing some of my rare plants and wasn’t sure if pumice would be an option for those and keep the gnats away.

Same thing, I use lechuza pon instead and my plants love it. The pon contains pumice, lavarock and zeolith so you do not have to add clay for cec. Do not use only zeolite

Apparently pumice is like crack rocks for plants! Lol. I think my zz's and pothos can do without, but my calathea on the other hand I think needs it!
Is adding zeolite is good for CEC? How much to add? 80% 20%?
Yes it is good for cec, you should add around 15% zeolith. It is the recipe of lechuza pon.

This is what the shop has sold to me as a snake plant
I am not having any issue with this because it looks decent when placed in my bedroom beside the bed and got hereby convinced that a high plant more than 20cm cant fit in this place. But still worry if this would become of 20 cm height during my life time
I noticedit has flowey shape which could be seen before getting deep into sleeping and while walking around the room
This is better than other 36 species of sansiveria that could be tall upwards and see only leaf back side
My personal view only
Now i noticed when it has arrived in my room 2 things
First it has refreshed and standed up little and the height from pot edge has become 8 instead of 7 while leaf sizes still same
Second and i am not dreaming or getting illusions, there is a tiny fisherman rope protruded out vertical of the pot with tiny yellow point at its end and that was last evening while this morning the tiny tip turned into 2 tiny yellow leaves like those coming out of a seed germination

How much asbestos micro dust in pumice? Some pumice mine and asbestos mine mix together.
How do you add additional soil when re-potting around the soil with pumous? I ask because 2 loose materials going in at the same time.

I always get a good start with pure pumice (with a little vermiculite mixed in for higher CEC) but invariably things fall apart and I notice green algae growing on top. What do you do to stabilize pH and prevent algae bloom?

The more I watch these interviews, the more I come to the conclusio just him speaking. Even the few words the humble colleague says is disrupted by his dominant colleague. It makes me very sorry for him. Yes, it can be this is your passion, pls be aware of how dominant you are. No offense but truth. He is just sitting, being led by him and the interviewer. Also shame on him. As an reporter you have to be sensitive to such issues. I would stand up and just leave. He anyhow knoes better, I don't get the chance to say anything. Emberassing.
