When I started my podcast and began editing the episodes, I realised how many filler words I used! Recording yourself is a great way to pick up on those filler words that detract from clear communication. Great video Riaz!
This is one area that personally always needs improving. It's easy for a clean presentation on video. When in conversation or live presentation, it is easy to fill the space with these crutch words and sounds. It takes a great deal of practice and attention to get it under control. Going to check your stuff out Kara. Thanks for all of the thoughtful feedback :)
I learnt what my filler words are whilst editing my UA-cam videos. So tired of all the time I spent editing, I thought I have to do something about this. It does feel more relaxing to just breathe, pause or close your mouth. Thanks for the video.
Taking meaningful pauses is such a good tip - use them in your favour and to create an effect (and while you're doing it you can take a breath and regroup on your next thought!). ✨
I think the idea of having friends watch us speaking and making tallies on things we say too often is a fun and creative idea! Especially for UA-camrs just starting out. Keep up the great content!
This resonates with me so much Riaz! As a former Toastmaster, where your filler words are counted during meetings (just like your tip), despite being hyper-aware of filler words, I still catch myself using them. I'm definitely going to try your strategies! Thanks!
Riaz Meghji I’ll for sure be paying attention to myself on video more. I never thought to analyze recordings of myself, which I have a lot of of course because of UA-cam lol.
Just found your channel and subscribed while preparing for my first ever presentation. I have to admit it was somthing worthy I did! Thank u for these amazing tips
I love how this is about not using fillers words and yet he does an intro about what the video is about "as if we didn't read the title" and he instructs you to subscribe as if you dont know how to use youtube,....
Great video Riaz. Many thanks. What are you using as a prompt? I have an autocue, but that needs to be driven by one hand - I see both your hands are free.
Thanks Sid. I use the parrot prompter and chunk the content so it’s less script more bullet point ideas. I believe there’s a foot pedal option out there as well so it can keep your hands free :)
Dude, this is awesome. Gotta tell you, it's amazing how you talk so well. No pauses and really engaging. Loved the tip with just closing my mouth. I'll try and let you know :)
Dang. Lol. Awesome video. I do all of these all of the time. Specially "so" and "right". Still a battle I am fighting. Great tips and will definitely try to be more aware and apply some of these things to prevent me from saying them. Thanks :)
Extremely useful content! The pause idea is wonderful also if we are asked a question we can paraphrase the question ,so it buys us some to think and also acts as a filler is useful in the Q& A sessions :-)
I'm so bad with this! I continue to work hard on this. It's one of the reasons why I play back my work before I move forward. And i love chunking! My acting coach taught this too, chunking in 3's with monologues it's so helpful.
It's a tough one to shake off Nisreen. Easily overlooked yet requires a great deal of work from all of us to overcome it. That's great to know acting coaches use chunking. Does this work when you need to memorize scripts when you're on set?
Another superb video!! The 'um' is my filler word. It's so much different when presenting on TV (with an expert host:-) and delivering content to a camera without that interaction. Thx for the tips!
Great hints, I'm personally guilty of "aaand", it costs me so much time editing. I will apply "close your mouth" between those lines of thought. Thanks!
Ha. If you close your mouth and still make a sound, it comes across as "hmmm", which makes you sound contemplative versus hesitant with the mouth open.
Main filler words that i discovered in my speech was "like" and "you know" 😸 found them while recording myself and can't believe that no one said anything about it, for me it was very distracting:D Now i am trying to be more aware when i speak, using pause method a the moment. Will see how it goes. Best wishes everyone 😸💫
Another great video and great advice, Riaz! (Just realized this episode doesn’t have captions available. Would you consider adding? Thanks in advance!)
I just gave an interview and I couldn't think so instantly so... I started using so much filler words that I got rejected.😂 however I am going back to give the interview. This time I am rectifying my mistakes
How many years has it been since you've uttered an um or uh Riaz? Using pause was a huge revelation in eliminating those words but they were replaced by So/And, with a few rights sprinkled in. By slowing down I'm generally more aware and have been able to improve. Still a ways to go. Thank you for the awesome, insightful tips and strategies.
This is even harder for UA-camrs making videos! Why? Because 45-60 minutes of recorded video gets cut down to a 10 minute video. In real life I don't say filler words that frequently, but once a tech video gets cut down I notice how often I lead with "Alright..." as a continuation. 🤣 I will be working on starting sentences without a filler word.
Filler words can definitely unfortunately take away from your credibility! I also like your section on chunking and it's for sure something I'll have to implement.

You are so correct with the substitution of UMS and AHS for Right and SO. Now I know that I need to close my mouth shat.

YES!!! I have worked on this so much in my teaching, but still fall back to ummmms and like every now and this. Loved these tips.
It’s an on going battle for humankind ;) thanks for checking out the video
Awww... I always say Ahs every time I speak. The tips you mentioned are very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Seah. Which tip do you think will give you the most benefit?
Riaz, I used to watch you on Breakfast Television every morning when I was in grade 9 back in 2011. Really happy to see you here!
Yes!! Whenever I get nervous I always start spouting out "ummm" haha! So I love the "pause and think" first! Great video!!
Glad it helps Bailey! Thank u

Exactly. You and Den have terrific presence on camera. Have a feeling you own each pause you take.
"close your mouth" LOVE IT - thank you!
Such amazing tips on how to avoid these dreaded 'ums' and 'ahs'! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome Marina. 👍🏽👍🏽
I did not have the habit of saying um ah .... I got it after watching people on youtube. And I started adopting it thinking it was cool 😢
I have been guilty of this my whole life lol. Thank you for this video!

This has been super helpful!! Thank you. Since starting youtube I’ve realised how much I use unnecessarily filler words!
UA-cam videos are an excellent exercise to see all of our weaknesses and practice how to get better. Thanks for stopping by!

You’re golden. I didn’t even notice these in your videos.
I really loved the tips shared in this clip, thanks for sharing, Riaz!

I usually go with option 2 and watch the playback. It's especially obvious when reviewing my UA-cam videos. Chunking really helps me!

Great tips!! #closeyourmouth genius!
I wish I learned this one many years ago :)
Great tips! "Close your mouth" works on so many levels. I definitely need to try a few of these, eh?
Closing your mouth makes your “uhhh” sound like a reflective “hmmm”! Let me know how these go for you!
@@RiazMeghji Will do!
One thing I've been doing to avoid filler words is to take a breath and continue wirh what I'm saying

I don't have an objection to "ums" and "ahs" because the things that people have replaced them with are "like" and "so...." which are 10x worse.
In concise ways, he all want to say is be calm whilst you're conversing with someone, don't nervous pal that's futile!
