Pause. 2 - 3 seconds & look around the room. Take just enough time for the room to wonder if something's wrong. Then hit them with a joke or some important piece of information ...
When speaking on zoom, you speak of such good ideas that fly right over my head but make so much sense now that youre saying them. People love to know that they're cared about and when you put in that extra time to speak with them about their lives, this must mean the world to them. Also, everyone loves hearing their own names so if you remember their names and consistently speak of their name, this will break down any barriers between you and whoever you're speaking to.
Thank you. I teach a Speech and Communication course for a community college. My students are preparing TED talks, so I searched UA-cam for tips. AWFUL! No diversity in the speakers, redundant "tips" about "turn on your video", a plethora of presenters who can't present--though seemingly they are pumped up on their confidence that they are experts. You are an expert. Plus you're cool. My students connected, and I am looking forward to their presentations.
Great to hear this helps. I wanted to being a fresh take on presenting. If you’re interested there are many more vids on the channel that might be of use for your students.
Thank you for this helpful video that I would use in the future for not only my speech but with any virtual presentations. I like the tips you gave. I am very shy so this will help me boost my confidence.
Zoom fatigue is such a real thing. In addition to my own YT videos, FaceTime chats with friends, and Zoom meetings, I also teach undergrad and grad courses 3x week. In person, these were sometimes challenging, but on a virtual platform-where so many of the students can’t or won’t share turn on their cameras-it’s EXHAUSTING. Regardless, I still go back to watch myself on the recorded sessions and agree with you that it can really make a difference. I noticed how quickly I was speaking through some slides, how many (accidentally) weird faces I was making when searching for a document to share on my screen. It’s time-consuming, but worth it, because communication, as we know, is what the listener-or, in this case, the VIEWER-does.
Thanks Dina. It is a great struggle that can be overlooked. You clearly feel it. The more we talk about it, the better we'll be able to connect, in person or remotely.
This was very helpful. I get overwhelmed and very awkward in zoom meetings because I am usually very self-conscious so these tips will definitely help break the ice. I can't wait to use these tips!
you probably dont give a damn but does anyone know of a way to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost the account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
very helpful...I can talk out with power face to face with my audience but in front of screen, I am really struggling. But thank you for the tips that served as encouragement.
Riaz! I'm getting ready to present a webinar to over 700 people tomorrow so have been watching some of your videos. Thank you so much for encouraging me to familiarize rather than memorize in order to connect better with my audience. You share such great, practical tips! I've put your book on my list of "to buy"s and can't wait to read it.
I enjoyed your video a lot! I host zoom workshops with 10-25 people and got comfortable in it. I do want to improve my performance in videos (youtube and Facebook Live) and will use your tips here! Thank you!
For some reason I tend to forget to think of ONE audience member. I’ve doing my first Zoom PD presentation to my COLLEAGUES, so thanks for this. I’ve been teaching my students but this will be the first time with peers. Need better lighting.
this is great. I'm definitely going to have to come back to this video as I'm planning on doing speaking gigs in the future! thanks for sharing brother!
I agree, whether on zoom or in real life, being engaged and connecting through a story is a very powerful way of ensuring that the meeting/speaking is memorable. thanks for sharing :)
Love these tips - we need to turn up as human beings and take time to learn how to use the technology to achieve what we need to achieve, and sometimes it's about connection and community right now
I enjoyed learning about range of emtotions from other students and how to catch the attention of the audience. Using their name catches more attention which i did not know! I believe improving my lighting will improve my speech videos drastically!
Thank you Riaz! This was a wonderful video! This was extremely helpful because I am just now beginning to get comfortable while filming myself on Camera!
Amazing content.. the day after tomorrow I will present in southeast asia.. this the first time I will doing presentation to share about success story. Watching your youtube make me more confident. And I like how the you talk.. just shocking with viewers you deserve have more than 1 M viewers..
Great tips! I remember when I asked you almost ten years ago if you had advice for me because I had such fear of public speaking and had to do a few presentations (scared sh@tless). You had suggested I video myself, which I did, I watched that first video recording and I was awful! Basically speaking like a robot. lol BUT it was an awesome lesson in being aware of expression, how to use my voice and body language, practice makes progress and all these years later, UA-cam and IG and FB live.
Talk about a throwback! Yes it totally helps. Humbling, yet raises awareness and only makes us better. So many places to show up online now. Thanks Gangoso!
These are such great tips! I like the idea of a poll function during the beginning prior to the meeting. Think, Pair and share is a brilliant technique to break up the time.
Thanks for the great tips! I've been a professional youth speaker for a couple years but now have to do a very large virtual event coming up. I've been avoiding virtual events with hopes the pandemic would go away...but obviously that's not happening! Thanks for the tips!
@@RiazMeghji Cool, thanks! I like the poll idea to kick off with and get the kids involved. I also have some fun props I'm going to use. I have to do 2 keynotes and 2 workshops. If it were in-person, I'd know I'd kill it...but virtually makes me so nervous.
@@RiazMeghji The biggest thing is the uncontrollable aspects of it like internet speed (which I'll be plugged directly in) new tech like Ecamm, and that I've always been able to read a young audience by their reaction and more importantly, their silence. Now, I feel a little like I'm peeing in the wind and just hoping my jokes land and also translate while also praying my dog doesn't bark or my computer randomly crash.
Amazing tips and advice, Riaz! Will definitely put these in place for my upcoming Zoom meetings and videos for social media. I've already shared this with my colleagues and clients as well :)
Describing your actions is a super important valid point! I do Zooms pretty regularly so not at the fatigue point yet but I love all your bits of advice here Riaz, new sub and looking forward to more videos!
