  • Hi there!
I'm Emily and I had a late diagnosis of Inattentive ADD (a type of ADHD) just two months after my 30th birthday. Finding out I was neurodivergent was scary and exciting, but now I'm ready to start treatment!
In this video, I vlog my fifth, sixth and seventh days on Concerta (starting dosage 18mg), talking about my side effects and showing some of the difficulties I have in life because of my ADHD. Concerta XL is a prolonged/slow/long release stimulant medication (its scientific name is methylphenidate!) used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This medication is sometimes called Ritalin - particularly in the US. This video shows my first day on the drug and highlights some of its effects (and side effects!) on my mind and body.
I will be continuing a vlog showing my experience with ConcertaXL as I test out my current dose and through the titration period.
Whether you're considering starting Concerta XL, have already begun treatment, are curious about ADHD and its links to depression, or are simply looking for some reassurance that you're not alone, this video is for you.
Be sure to say hi in the comments - I'd love to make some new friends in the neurodivergence community, and don't forget to like, share and subscribe for more videos on mental health, ADHD, and related topics!
PLEASE NOTE: I am not a medical professional, this video is for entertainment and anecdotal information only. Always consult your healthcare provider if you are considering taking any medication to make sure it is safe and right for you.

Your videos are making me feel a lot better about my experience so far. I have been feeling defeated because I’m on day 5, depressed, still forgetful, overwhelmed, anxious, etc. but I’m gonna keep taking it and give it a fair chance. I also forgot to take it between day 2 & 3 of course but I feel more hopeful that I’ll see results soon!

I can say though, the day I skipped it I had a very small threshold for irritability (which is my usual when unmedicated) & on the medicine I am much less irritable so thats the biggest win i’ve noticed!

I’m on lidexamphetamine and 3 weeks in. I also feel my dose needs increasing but those first 2 days were a revelation!

That's also known as Vyvanse, right? Glad you saw an impact the first 2 days! I think any positives I've seen from my first week on Concerta XL were just placebo unfortunately :(

@@adhdemilyhi! I am on 18mg concerta xl now day 4. Im curious on what makes you think it’s just placebo at this mg? I feel some improvement but did end up taking a nap today 🥲. Since it is a stimulant I imagined there wouldn’t be much placebo affect but maybe I’m wrong? Thank you for your videos they have helped me along 💜

Without knowing you I wouldn't want to comment on what is ' normal' for you. However it is ' normal' to feel a bit anxious or sad about things going on in life if they are tough. If those feelings haven't derailed you and you you have carried on with everyday living, that's very positive.

Heya :) Yeah, I hear you. I think I've just struggled with sustained down-periods for years now and it does derail me for time to time. See my "The Dark Side of ADHD" for more info!

The main cause of the Adderall shortage is due to supply chain issues. I’m in the process of writing a video about it. One hiccup in the supply chain disrupts the entire process.
It’s about all sorted out though.

Is this a US based issue? We don't seem to be struggling so much in the UK (from my experience anyway!)

@@adhdemily the shortage in the US is due to the DEA controlling how many drugs can be made. Since COVID-19 the rate of ADHD prescriptions increased about 14% year over year, but the DEA bases their numbers on previous year, which is usually about 7%.

Also concerta is unaffordable for people that don't have insurance that cover name brand meds. In 2016 our then president put people in power of departments that they had a huge conflict of interest... So our FDA chair didn't help with the fact the concerta generics were found to not be bioavailability equivalent from a 2014 FDA reevaluation. So for about the last 6 or so years people were getting the only approved generic that was bio equivalent because it was merely rebranded concerta.... Which is over as of 1/23/23 so people who were on concerta are in a tough place considering Concerta is about $800 a month without discounts or coupons.
You are actually using me brand so it will work properly. Many people getting the unapproved generics don't have the same kind of release mechanism, or in the right situation it will release all the medication too quickly, last a short time, and make people feel like crud... Not to mention the active ingredient and be variable by 25% or so.
