I like your refreshing advice about investing mate. You curb your expectations, set yourself a 'comfortable' limit to what you spend on Pokemon, understanding where you stand in the grand scheme of things. Being realistic about investing is what success is all about. There really is no magic trick, start today, stay within your limits, be focused and disciplined, and understand that it's a marathon, not a sprint! Happy investing.
What is your advice on controlling your spending on Pokemon. This is one of my favorite hobbies and I’m struggling to not spend my next paycheck on more.
@pokeoz91 I'm very fortunate to never been well off with money for most of my life. So now that I'm in a position to have this "extra" money. I'm doing what I can to make it work for me and my wife. Roth roi, crypto, 401k, stocks, and bonds are great. There's just something about going into my battle station room. Just the small extra room in the basement. Seeing something I love displayed, that for a long time in my life was a luxury out of my reach.
my sells are going to be from long term holds. Now if I had lots of extra money to spend I'd probably mix more of short term and long term holds, but since I'm limited right now I'm just focusing on long term holds where I don't need to worry about fees/shipping costs. From SWSH my priorities are ES by far, then a mix of Fusion Strike, Chilling Reign, Brilliant Stars. PC ETBs, some regular ETBs and some booster boxes. With SV I'm not holding any collection box, just pokemon center ETBs and Booster Boxes.
That's where I'm at too haha. Not too concerned about a selling fee when I'm up 10x+ on my investment. We really haven't gotten any impressive collection boxes yet from SV.. The shrouded fable SIR boxes have the best promos we've gotten yet, but I don't think anyone wants the packs inside haha. Hopefully they get one right in the near future!
If you think you feel bad Oz imagine how I feel paying $6.99 per pack for 1st edition base set booster packs and ripping box after box after box back in 1999. 😱 Even 7/11 sold them right at the counter.
I'll tell ya, that last point you were making about sitting on sealed products hits home even now. I'm extremely small fry, Collectr is telling me my portfolio is at around £3.6k but it is absolutely about the fun for me. I also have ADHD so working on the financial side of things has its ups and downs too, and then there's the promise you make to yourself of selling things on when really that's not likely. So it's a rocky ride, but it's also giving me some great lessons on financial discipline and not giving into impulse (sometimes). Overall great video mate, appreciate the honesty and sometimes you just have to accept that you've missed the boat on a particular product and move on. Stocks have never been appealing to me, and although I have shares in the company I work for (multi-billion $ videogame company) that I'll never match in value with a Pokémon collection, it doesn't give me the same warm feeling that nabbing a booster box deal or vintage booster pack does. You've got yourself another subscriber!
It was fairly quiet back then mate and without massive amounts of social media it was harder to tell but everyone was chasing gold stars, particularly the zard!

Buying an evo skies booster box at 600/700 right now is a good move, it will be 2k-3k in 3-5 years time. Too good of a set, 17 alt arts, amazing cards, popular , polarizing set. Don’t wait like on team up. Get it now.
outside of singles/graded singles, I think anything ES is a no brainer hold. We're seeing this spike when SWSH is barely gone, it's going to probably go up exponentially as it gets older, especially when SV gets phased out. I expect good things from Chilling Reign as well, very valuable set. Fusion Strike and Brilliant Stars will follow to some level as these are all solid sets. I could be wrong and only ES goes up...
I totally agree. Look how much better a set it is than Team-Up. I know Team-up was short printed, but the demand for evo skies is soooooo much greater and is performing very similarly even without being short printed. People told me I paid too much at $300 per box and $7 per sleeved pack 😂 I guarantee those people would kill for those prices now. Guessing the same will be true looking back at this comment in another year or 2 and we'll be wishing we bought more at $700/box. I paid triple retail and it is still by FAR my best performing SWSH investment.
@@jellypete2338 for sure. Like we went from $18 for sleeves boosters to $26 in a couple days… if booster boxes see a similar rise, that’ll take it to that $1000 mark. Genuinely think it’ll surpass team-up in the next few years. Such better arts, more hits, and more popular mons.
The question is what to buy to sit on thinking ita gonna sky rocket after 5 years. Ide hate investing and breaking even and losing money. Im thinking Stellar Crown might take off with all the really nice alt art cards in the set.

I'm collecting them to build the sets minus the arts to keep and mainly trade to complete my sets and build up my PC.151 is my next set to complete..plenty of OG Pokemon and beautiful arts.i like Blastoise, Ivysaur and Pikachu! 🤙

It's another interesting one. I've learned a lot from you, but I don't follow that 5% rule, but that's just me. I probably go about 15% but have a consistent process with that. 2x ETB, 2xBB, 2x PC ETB per set. Sell one of each once prices rise to minimise cost of the one I keep. It's worked. Some haven't appreciated at all, but some like ES for example made me very good money so it balances. I have recently gone heavy in JPN 151 though, and also quite heavy in the ENG 151 (the UPC and the PC Squirtle promo for £120 to be is a bargain)
