    Hong Kongers used to look down on their mainland counterparts with disdain and feeling of superiority. I love how time changes their fortune. The fact that Hong Kong becomes more and more insignificant to China's economy every year is like divine justice.

      Now that the CCP is in charge, it can choose which city to prioritize in terms of finance and trade. There is no longer any separate Hong Kong government electorate which can change with times at a different pace or direction than the mainland.

    It is painful to transform and it may fail at the end. But the world is changing, global south is booming and challenging the old rich countries, as one of the old rich places, HK has lost its competitive edges to neighboring ambitious cities in many areas. Its transformation should have started years ago but money is too easy to earn before COVID so there is no enough motivation. It is changing from top to bottom now, spending lots of money, not seeing much return so far, getting increasing integrated into the big market of China, particularly the GBA, target to leverage the money and talent flow to jumpstart its fading economics. We need to survive before we thrive.

      If you remember through time. China had been diverting and strangling hk even before 1997. They just recently realized that they got hk 100% back and leaving it in shambles does them no good. Hence why this big greater bay area mumble jumble talk. It's just a distraction so the hk people won't feel depressed. Too late. Hk will never be like its formal glory. It is just going to be another Chinese city and the people there in denial. While the smarter ones and able ones have already left. They keep pretending that hk is the same as it was. However, it's more like hk trying to fool the world by wearing a mask saying it's still like pre 1997, while behind the mask is the real image as it's china.

    Hong Kong is a bridge linking China and the outside world as the host said. This is a good comparison to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The bridge is a great engineering marvel but with very little traffic. HK used to be an important financial centre, but if it cannot have capital flow through it. It is like the bridge, a white elephant. If there is a need to travel, with or without the bridge, there would still be people travelling between two places by hook or by crook. If the GBA is so promising, with or without HK, it would still flourish. Economics and politics affect each other. Not much have been mentioned around politics in HK in this episode. Might be because it is a taboo subject in HK now. The HK that we know is gone! It is like a person with Alzheimer. Looks the same as before, but we know the outcome.

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 3 дні тому

      I wouldn't say it's a taboo subject, but rather it's been off the rails for far too long so China hit the reset button.
      The main problem with HK is that it never understood the inevitable sunset of its "Pearl of the Orient" monopoly. With China growing this rapidly and having a dozen seaports just like HK, how long can you stay relevant as "exporter of cheap Chinese goods"?
      The fallacy of the China-hating mindset is that those wallowing on this mentality wish that China stayed poor forever. A big, big mistake. Hong Kong was built to exploit China of the 1980s. Whether it wants to develop a stronger local economy or adapt with China's tech boom, either way it is woefully unprepared to coexist with the China of the 21st century.

    I need to say that as an expat living in the GBA the transport network is extensive but as for convenient, not at all. The bullet train stations are all unfortunately very far removed from the city centers and it takes a lot of effort to travel to those. Then there is the extensive security measures one has to go through when entering even just a subway station and the line up for these can and does take a very long time. Then one has to endure the shoving and pushing at the bullet train station’s security check points to enter the station; again a lot of time wasted. Then there is the waiting for the bullet train. One cannot really meticulously plan your trip around specific times because of all the security check points and long line ups; one never knows how long those can take, and the crowds of people one might encounter (yes there are crowds in all major big cities but unfortunately they are not very organized around these parts). Apart from long waiting times one is also exposed to herding like environments with endless railings and obstacles in stations to navigate instead of just free flow foot traffic. Taking a cab to a bullet train station… the traffic is a nightmare. So all in all as extensive as the network is it is not very efficient. The complete opposite can be said of HK though. Extremely efficient on every possible level. I do hope that on that mainland side they can make improvements. Then there is also customs to consider when entering and leaving HK and Macau. For comparison, I live 100km from HK Central and it’s a 1.5 hour drive should i want to drive there (excluding customs). It’s at least three hours on a good day if I take public transport from my house (excluding customs) - a far stretch from the so called one hour loop.

    HongKong would be overshadowed by the Cities of Shanghai, Shenzen, and their likes. Just based from my opinion. Basic logic that the Central Government would put emphasis in the development of a financial hub created by the party/`s central government. And the central government perceived Hongkongers not your typical Chinese. (Sons and daughters never raised by them). So they would try to develop a financial district that would be the symbol of China, according to their image. For me the beauty of HongKong and Macao is having that unique identity. The crossbreed of East and West. The vibrant territory may loose some of its glitters/shine incase the west migrated out of the area.

    I travel to HK often. It is very far from being convenient on the mainland side. There's a crush of people, the queues are ridiculous, mainlanders are savages when it comes to waiting in line, and you have to pass customs. There are some differences between the two societies. HKers know how to wait in a line, respect personal space, don't spit or urinate in the street, and most can speak English. These differences are never more visible than during the commute between the mainland and HK.

    For the CCP the primary objective of the "Greater Bay Area" initiative appears to be the deliberate reduction of Hong Kong's financial prominence. This strategy is emblematic of the CCP's iron-fisted approach to governance and its willingness to pursue its goals at any cost, including the autonomy and economic significance of Hong Kong.
    it becomes clear that the CCP's actions are not merely about regional development but are part of a calculated effort to consolidate control and suppress dissent. This approach underscores the lengths to which the CCP is willing to go to maintain its grip on power, often at the expense of economic efficiency and individual freedoms - the current “Spot and Report” campaign says it all.

    HK plays a different tole int he GBA, where it provides the experience and knowhow of the firmly established professional services including legal, financial, wealth management and other related industries that China cannot, or is not interested in providing. However, it is sad to say that these services probably may only benefit and feed, say, 1.5 million people? Much like Manhattan in NY, these industries can only sustain Manhattan, not the rest of New York. And facing fierce competition from SZ, the rest of HK outside of these industries will suffer for a period of not less than 10 years until either the salary, commercial rent and cost of living of HK plummets or when SZ rises to an equilibrium, which I presume would be less than a 30% gap? By then the level of rents and salaries would be dictated by the job nature, not their residence status or identity (which IMO is ridiculous). Furthermore, this doesn't take into account that SZ can hire outside of the city. This is the hard truth nobody wants to talk about.

    GBAE integration with the mainland is inevitable and undoubtably beneficial for HK in the long term. However, this gain will be offset by HK losing its status as one of the major international financial hubs, affecting the city adversely. This phenomenon has already begun, with decreasing FDI, departure of foreign enterprises and talents. HK certainly benefit when it integrates with other cities in the area, what happens when China economy continues its current trajectory and faces additional economic headwinds? No common law, no financial transparency, stability and investor confidence. This documentary also ignores another large negative impact, how this close integration will affect ordinary HKongers, who are way more Westernized in terms of tastes and mindsets than the mainlanders. Where to migrate to in Asia that has this old HK economic dynamics and freedom? Well, just follow rich mainlander and HK migrant$$$ to Singapore!
