Making a Jane Austen Regency Dress | Part 1

- My Costube friends are doing a #RelaxedRegency Sew-Along, and I decided to join! I mostly use hand sewing techniques, with a little bit of machine sewing, to create a floral Regency dress with piping. My inspiration comes from Lydia's dress in BBC's 1995 Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen Mini Series. I use a combination of patterns from Joann's, American Duchess for Simplicity and McCall's. This is part one of a two part series on making the dress.
I misspoke in the video, my stays and chemise were made from Laughing Moon patterns.

Very cool! The 1995 version clothes are so real-looking, I always forget they are modern recreations when I'm watching it.
I know what you mean! They did such a great job costuming that series!
I have those same patterns and I’m glad they can work together so well. Thank you for showing the whole process.
Happy to help!
It's so cute! Soooo much hand sewing though haha
Thank you! And hahaha, you know meeee
i realize I'm pretty off topic but do anybody know of a good place to stream newly released series online ?
@Ezra Rhett Flixportal :)
@Larry Colin Thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) Appreciate it !!
Fabulous video! So happy to see you show the McCall's 7493 - I'm working on it now. I'm so amazed at how well this pattern translates to cloth - it's wearable! I want to see the skirt because I didn't put enough gathers in the middle at the back of mine, and I also really want to see how you close up the dress at the end - I'm a little stuck on how to place the buttons.
Thank you! Yeah the closure at the back can be kind of frustrating to figure out, there's some weird folding going on lol. As long as it overlaps enough to place buttons, you sound be good!
drinky drinky all the tea!
All of it!
a corgi!!!!
Yes! Diana's a fun one 😊
I'm making a dress for the first time. And need some tips! The dress is similar to this pattern. But I need to know how to cut out the pattern pieces. And how to put them together.
@AskAlice24 awesome! What pattern are you using, does it have clear instructions? If so, definitely start there. If not, the way I cut and construct mine is a good place to start. Doubled fabric, cut out the correct size, sew up bodice, fit it, then attach the skirt part.
The pattern has about four styles. I'm attempting to do the short sleeve with long skirt. Thank you for your tips!
@AskAlice24 good luck!
Thank you, I will need it! 😅
Did you make the button facingand buttonhole facin the same width?
I took a look, yes I made both facings the same width.
Om the placket, did you fold them over the same amount of folds for the buttons snd the button holes? On the pattern, it says cut one, does it mean cut that panel for facing off? Or cut the interfacing off?
Also thanks fir the hashtags.
I'll take a look at my instructions in the morning and see if I can find the answer for you!
@@AbiSueCostumes Thanks Ma’dear
@@mothersoul1 of course!
From what I remember, I think it means cut the interfacing off, the facing should fold to the inside. Both sides should be the same width so they can overlap with the buttons
@@AbiSueCostumesThanks so much ⭐️I know I seem like such a dunce, but it was so confusing. Also, I have become quite spoiled from always watching videos instead of reading instructions.
Hi, I am currently working with McCall's M7493 but I lost the pattern for the piece 18 (the bodice lining) do you think there's a way of working the front bodice pattern? 😖 Thank you so much! ❤️
Hello! I'm not sure, it depends on your level of comfort and ability with patterns. You could probably work around that piece, it would just take some work and maths.
Hi Ophéle,
How did it turn out? How did you do the back closures? Oh, did you fold one side less than the other so ti make them overlap?
@@mothersoul1 I bought the pdf pattern on sale for 3$ and printed the piece :') I did 2dresses out of used curtains and they look great! ^^ it's for the Bridgerton experience in montreal! Thank you 🥰
@@ophelieboismenu4205 Bonjour Montreal!!One of my favorite cities ❤️❤️. How did you sew your back closures?
🌹
@@mothersoul1 the buttons? Or the inside of the back of the top of the dress?
