GREAT VIDEO. You cover a real pain-in-the-but topic very clearly for a wide range of user types and usage scenarios. I have used Blackmagic for a few years now, but the driver / I/O for mirrorless and DSLR's is spotty. Looks like the the Magewell is a tremendous option for our studio work, and thanks to you I can see a good use for some of the streaming options as well. Again, thanks!

I'm constantly reviewing my recording options as I use them most days to record straight to my pc 👍

5:23 - There is a video on the Magewell channel that explains why "USB Capture Utility V3" does not recognise it and how to fix that.
It's because it's actualy not the Gen 2 device, but the silver version of the Gen 1 device also named XI100DUSB-HDMI.
To mention also, the original Gen 1 or XI100DUSB-HDMI was first black.
On one of the amazon pages you show in the title is written that the Gen 2 they sell replaces XI100DUSB-HDMI.
The video is titled - "How to make XI100DUSB-HDMI compatible with USB Capture Utility V3" ( ua-cam.com/video/auD06o0HKvs/v-deo.html )
Also there is a support page with instructions and the firmware ( magewell.com/kb/004020009/detail )

@@KevinMuldoon Thank you for the rview, I forgot that.
      I just found more information.
And now I'm almost absolutely sure you have the silver Gen 1 device also named XI100DUSB-HDMI.
Here is how it looks (image taken from the firmware update page above):
      magewell.com/static/uploads/2019/02/15511460938547.png
And here is how the Gen 2 looks (taken from its page):
      magewell.com/static/product/capture/usb-capture-hdmi-gen-2/product/USBCaptureHDMIGen2_3.png
One obvious difference is Gen 1 has icons close to the leds, but Gen 2 has text labels "STATUS" and "POWER" instead.
0:31- yours has the icons, not the text labels.

Many thanks for that. You're a star.
You're 100% right. Mine does not have the writing at the side. Well, my first one doesn't. I've actually bought a second one and that looks like it is definitely the gen 2 version.
I bought it from CEX and they sold it to me as gen 2. I may have sent it back if I had known at the time, but I've actually been really happy with it so reluctant to do so as they don't have a real gen 2 in stock.
I was looking on their website and can't see a comparison between the versions. Is the second generation just a minor improvement?

    • @2L40K
      @2L40K 4 роки тому +2

      @@KevinMuldoon I found 2 more interesting things.
      1. There is another Gen 1 that instead of icons / pictographs has text labels as Gen 2.
But the labels on this other Gen 1 are horizontal, as opposed to the vertical labels on Gen 2.
It is here in this video review ( ua-cam.com/video/AaZ3vmJUItM/v-deo.html )
So there is a possibility that your second one may still be Gen 1, for sure only the software can tell.
      2. According to this FAQ page ( magewell.com/kb/004020010/detail ) for Gen 1 you can directly use the older "USB Capture Utility V2" ( magewell.com/downloads/gen-1#/tools ),
without upgrading the firmware (link in my first comment) to one that is compatible with "USB Capture Utility V3".
There is an interesting video for this old "USB Capture Utility V2", also known as "Dongle Helper" ( ua-cam.com/video/RfSmW6nBh2E/v-deo.html )
Now to the differences between Gen 1 and Gen 2.
There are 3 areas where they can differ:
      - input resolutions and frame rates, which are determined by the HDMI version / bandwidth,
      - processing options such as frame resizing, frame rate re-sampling, color conversion, etc,
      - output resolutions and frame rates, which on the topmost are limited by the USB version / bandwidth, next comes what the FPGA chip inside the box is limited to, and to the bottom of all is what of it's capabilities are actually been used by the firmware.
      That's the general idea.
And simply they both can do 1080p60 (up to 1920x1200@60), and both can NOT do 4k60, since USB 3.0 does not have enough bandwidth for that, and USB 3.1 is needed like in Gen 2 PRO devices.
Gen 2 can do 2048x2160@30 (not even 4k) while Gen 1 is limited to 1920x1200@60.
That's the output, but the input is HDMI 1.2 for Gen 1 and HDMI 1.4a for Gen 2.
Which is something like 2560x1440@30 for Gen 1 and 3840x2160@30 for Gen 2.
Regarding the processing options - I don't know.
The only way is to use the USB Capture Utility V3 (for Gen 1 after upgrading the firmware)
Here is the manual for it:
      magewell.com/files/20171013USB-Capture-Utility-V3-user-manual_en_US.pdf
And yes, the improvement looks like minor and quite strange.
But there might be some differences that are crucial for some use cases, I don't know.

@@2L40K many thanks again. You've helped me out a lot.
I don't notice a big difference between my two versions. So I am happy with them.

Strange they don't have it listed better on their website.

Going to use the Magewell (probably) to connect my seldom used Hero7 GoPro to my PC to turn it into a dedicated webcam. I DO plan adding a dedicated Shure lav mic or handheld Shure I have laying around so I've got to confirm the mic integration portion. Thoughts on this?
Also, the Magewell is REALLY enticing because, 1) it's PNP nature, 2) I expect it to alleviate(?) some of the processing my Intel i3, WIN64 pc would normally have to do due to its small amount of built-in video processing I believe?

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  4 роки тому

Yeah the Nagewekk is a great device. It's doesn't spike CPU much, but obviously your computer still has to do something.
Be aware that on camera mics and lav mics etc can't simply be plugged directly into the computer. Well, most can't, unless your motherboard has additional audio ports.
So you'd probably have to run those mics through an audio interface.

I have read mixed reviews on this unit. people either love it or hate it. the ones that hate it complain it get very hot within 30 mins to 1 hour of use, and then intermittently loses signal. Also the connection points for hdmi, usb become very loose. What is your experience with these issues? Largely I want to use this with an hd camera, and my macbook and stream using either zoom, obs.. Thanks

I read those same reviews before buying it, but I haven't had any problems whatsoever.
I've got two of them and one of them is used every single today to connect to my main camera. Thousands of hours of live streams and videos using it. Absolutely no issues.
Maybe others have I been lucky, but I'm happy with both of them and would buy again.

@@quelltraining the cable could definitely be a fail point.
These things are always a pain to troubleshoot as the only way of knowing for sure is buying another cable and testing it.
If it's not the cable, my guess is that there is a setting stopping it working, however usually cameras show the HDMI signal with the menu and you just need to turn that off for a clean signal.

      Hi Shark.
Good to have you on board 👍
I was actually looking at the GH5 and GH5S last night.
I'm going to do a video about the cameras I own. A lot of them are dated now, so I'm probably going to sell them and put them towards a new cameras such as the GH5S.
I put everything through an audio interface for live videos. I think it's always better to do that than pull audio from the camera.
The end result may be the same though.
That is, if this adapter takes audio from your camera, you can use it for your stream in OBS etc.
