- Brompton Cemetery (originally the West of London and Westminster Cemetery) is a London cemetery, managed by The Royal Parks, in West Brompton in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries. Established by Act of Parliament and laid out in 1839, it opened in 1840, originally as the West of London and Westminster Cemetery. Consecrated by Charles James Blomfield, Bishop of London, in June 1840, it is one of Britain's oldest and most distinguished garden cemeteries. Some 35,000 monuments, from simple headstones to substantial mausolea, mark more than 205,000 resting places. The site includes large plots for family mausolea, and common graves where coffins are piled deep into the earth. It also has a small columbarium, and a secluded Garden of Remembrance at the northern end for cremated remains. The cemetery continues to be open for burials. It is also known as an urban haven for nature. In 2014, it was awarded a National Lottery grant to carry out essential restoration and develop a visitor centre, among other improvements. The restoration work was completed in 2018.
Although the cemetery was originally established by a private company, it is now the property of the Crown.
By the early years of the 19th century, inner city burial grounds, mostly churchyards, had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and were seen as a hazard to health and an undignified way to treat the dead. In 1837 a decision was made to lay out a new burial ground in Brompton, London. The moving spirit behind the project was the architect and engineer, Stephen Geary, and it was necessary to form a company in order to get parliamentary permission to raise capital for the purpose. Geary was appointed as architect but was later forced to resign. Securing the land - some 40 acres - from local landowner, Lord Kensington and the Equitable Gas Light Company, as well as raising the money proved an extended challenge.[5] The cemetery became one of seven large, new cemeteries founded by private companies in the mid-19th century (sometimes called the 'Magnificent Seven') forming a ring around the edge of London.
The site, previously market gardens, having been bought with the intervention of John Gunter of Fulham, was 39 acres (160,000 m2) in area. Brompton Cemetery was eventually designed by architect, Benjamin Baud with at its centre, a modest sandstone domed chapel dated 1839, at it southern end, reached by two symmetrical long colonnades, now all Grade II* listed, in the style of St. Peter's Square in Rome, and flanked by catacombs. It was intended to give the feel of a large open air cathedral. It is rectangular in shape with the north end pointing to the northwest and the south end to the southeast. It has a central "nave" which runs from Old Brompton Road towards the central colonnade and chapel. During the 4-year restoration project that began in 2014, an original Victorian flooring with Bath and York stone radial pattern was uncovered underneath the chapel carpet.
Below the colonnades are catacombs which were originally conceived as a cheaper alternative burial to having a plot in the grounds of the cemetery. Unfortunately, the catacombs were not a success and only about 500 of the many thousands of places in them were sold. The Metropolitan Interments Act 1850 gave the government powers to purchase commercial cemeteries. The shareholders of the cemetery company were relieved to be able to sell their shares as the cost of building the cemetery had overrun and they had seen little return on their investment and there were few burials at first.

Many people talking about it being “over grown”. The meadow flowers are left to grow long in the summer to benefit the insects and wildlife in the cemetery. It’s very good that these old graves are now habitats for nature and not sterile lawn. I live round here and it really is amazing how much nature is inside this urban area. Interestingly, plants that people planted on the graves of their loved ones a hundred years ago come up again year after year. If they were ‘weed whacked’ then this wouldn’t happen. Sometimes it’s good to have a hands off approach and let nature do it’s thing. A difficult thing for some people to understand I suppose!
There is nothing like these cemeteries that make up the magnificent seven. They are extraordinary and you are so very fortunate to have them. Their history is forever.
Beautiful ! the monuments were created before all the technology we have now. this must have been back-breaking work! The Artistry on these tombs and headstones!
Thats what I love the most about these places Boom
Beautiful cemetery!✝️
Your appreciation of the squirrels is absolutely charming ❤
Big animal lover 😊
Loved all these old Graves. Wish I could take a trip to London to walk around them and take a look around. Thank you for the tour. Love it
Maybe one day Joan. Thanks for watching x
Beautiful cemetery, thanks for the tour. See you on the next one. Hope you feel better soon. Take care, we need you!😊🥀🌻🌹💖
Hello Julie
Thankyou so much totally breathtaking - it's like a City in itself. I loved the squirrels they are like these friendly keepers of the Cemetery - reminded me of Nutkins and his friends from Peter Rabbit. Best wishes and good vibes from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺❤️🇬🇧☮️🙏🐨🦘
What a beautiful cemetery, I could walk there everyday from Indiana USA
What gorgeous monuments. Thanks for sharing this beautiful cemetery.
this place is so beautiful, love that it was being used as a recreational area where there were joggers and cyclists, the minimal landscaping with the tall grass and flowers is a beautiful look
I love the terrace above the catacombs.
It was a joy to walk around them, felt very peaceful
The grave at 13 mins belongs to a builder of the titanic
Literally you did a ... "squirrel!" Sorry, had to. I'd have done the same. Hehe Lovely walk.
hahah I always do. Love them
Wow that’s a charming cemetery, I could walk around there for hours 👍 thanks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You're welcome Jim. I think I was there for 6 hours! ha
@@deadgoodwalks I can believe it, that’s a very nice cemetery 👍👍
Sweet little squrill. Not even afraid of you. That means you're a good person. The animals and babies know!!! Love and respect Tamsen Robert's in Riverside Cali
🧡🧡
I am astonished, that there are bicycles and even dogs allowed on this cemetery! This is an absolute no-go on German cemeteries. I love animals, but let dogs sh..... into the bushes of a cemetery, maybe even on a grave that nobody tends anymore, where the headstone or the cross has fallen or sunken into the ground, this seems rather odd to me. The squirrels are really sweet, I would like to go there just to bring them nuts or something. The place in itself is quite remarkable with these lots of graves and crosses, and all of these differ from another, this was real art and beautiful to behold. Nowadays the graves nearly all look the same in one or the other way, a pity.
American here; i have actually visited this cemetery.
it would be cool if you did a collaboration with faces of the forgotten.
Another beautiful walk with the dead. Thank you 💛
Thank you too for watching 🙏
Perhaps H.G. Wells got the the Time Machine story idea from tomb story and Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars from the tomb teleportation stories? Perhaps the lost key opens the tomb and turns on the time machine? 😁
Liked this brompton cemetery and the catacombs (separate video) really creepy down there. Happy 2023 to you although you never showed your face! ❤ thanks!
These are beautiful grave stones.
The animals are tame because the dead doesn't bother them.....cute little squirrel.
The old cemeteries are so interesting and full of history! 😊
Loved the birds chirping. Very peaceful. Thanks
THANKS AGAIN FOR A LOVELY TOUR! HAVE A GREAT DAY!✌😊🐿
Thanks Cynthia! Good to have you come along again
You just reminded me...I forgot the squirrel emoji in the title lol. Now done 😂
What a charming accent in your speaking voice, could listen to you for hours.
Thanks Michael, it's from Yorkshire
How sad that Bonomi lost his first four children all within a week of each other from whooping cough. :-(
Such grief is unimaginable.
It would cost a fortune to build those today .
So pieceful I love going around cemeterys I'm a mazed how big some head stones are some are awful. But I love to see them .
🧡🧡
Thank you so much for taking us around this lovely old cemetery ❤
Theses head stones are amazing works of art. You picked a fantastic day for this video. The Victorians had real style.
It's all so very beautiful! I could spends weeks there, taking photos of the statues and crosses.
Ann Pettitt: a woman who was a Great John Howard´s mother. I love John Howard´s life and his humanity labor for prisoners at XVIII century.
first i've heard the Egyptians and time travel ... interesting
they 'lost' the key to that door, probably a good thing... you never know 😳... beautiful place, thank you 💖
The squirrels will follow you around, and you can actually handfeed them.
I met an old lady there once, years ago. She had bags of nuts, and seeds, and had a group of squirrels surrounding her, who she was hand feeding. She told me she had done it daily, for years.
I tried to go today to Brompton Cemetery, unfortunately, the weather wasn't that good as I left home with just a T-shirt on me and when I went to Bond Street station to take the bus 74 that would take me to the cemetery, it was bloody windy and cold (no freezing but cold) and there was no sunshine so I gave up my trip to the cemetery but I will try again on Wednesday ........ I've been to Algate Cemetery, Edmonton Cemetery and the one by Stamford Hill (close to the Jewish area), they are interesting places, full of history and kind of sadness and loneliness.
Thank you so much, great as always ....This cemetery is fascinating and its the first I have heard about a time machine with the Egyptian writing, very interesting indeed. Its so big this cemetery yet so peaceful. And I love the precious Squirrels.
Yet again another “dead good walk” thank you I really enjoyed it. I love the title ‘’ Dead Good Walk” it always makes me smile 😊
Good video mate! Thankyou my brother across the pond!

Great video, nice bit of history too 😀
Hi Sarah, thank you very much, Glad you enjoyed it ✌️
Soy la unica que le causa ansiedad no poder ver los nombres de las lapidas 😆.
Excelente video, deseo que un futuro pueda ver toda esta belleza en persona.
I agree. I like reading gravestones 😊
I laughed when the guy said something, and you thought he said, "Hi Stumpy." He was weird! Love all of your videos! I am going back watching older ones. 👋
I think he was talking to the squirrel to be fair 🐿️ maybe that’s his nickname for the little guy??
Very interesting, thank
You!
What a gorgeous place to spend eternity so peaceful.
this cemetery can look very strange on hot sunny days as it has been a gay cruising ground for many years very often bare chested muscle guys sun bathing on graves!
@@vincentcharlton4995 lol really would love to see that lol.
Amazing experience going to this cemetery.
I just subbed after coming across you on tiktok. Great videos, inspired me to do my own (hopefully soon)
Hello and welcome! You definitely should give it a go Susan
Its so peaceful and calm there
beautiful
I love the video great story sir thank you so much for the video
06:31 - they filmed an episode of the Crown on Netflix, in this very spot recently. Season 5 episode 3 - if you forward to 44:28 - you can see you were stood in the exact spot the camera pans around. It looks like they placed a fake grave on the ground to film. I knew I recognised this spot as soon as I saw your video.
Apropos that Ms Pankhursts marker is brown. I hope the King's horse wasn't hurt in her death. Invest in a telescoping swiffer duster so you can clear the cobwebs before shoving your camera in for a view. Also you can look for a high power camping flashlight that is rechargeable online. I have a 2 million candle power flas....torch for such things!
It wasn’t Emmeline Pankhurst who stepped in front of the King’s horse. It was Emily Wilding Davison. Emmeline died in a nursing home in Hampstead. A far less traumatic end👍
I've said before, that if you want peace and quiet and a sence of historic atmos with unspoilt nature a graveyard is the place to go. Unless its next to a bleeding airport lol.
So Many Beautiful💀👻Resting Places; juSt Yards Away From Each Other! Nice!!
Sou do Brasil 🇧🇷 adorei o vídeo 👏👏
Great video 📹
Great video 👍
Thanks for watching Ral 🙏
American cemeteries, most anyway, weed whack the tall grass and weeds around the tombstones. How come that's not done in such a beautiful place?
Very enjoyable video, thank you.
It's a shame the grounds are so overgrown, would look spectacular if the grass was cut.
Most welcome Ian, I think its usually pretty well maintained, must have caught them off guard ha
They cememories do get tied up but at times left so wildlife nature have a place to live. 🌹
Wish they would cut the grass alot more in graveyards and upkeep them better
Does no one keep it tidy, sad to see it like this🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
🧡🧡
So peaseful !!💔💔💔💔💔💔
Great video! I'm living vicariously through you at the moment. Can anyone go on the tours? I'm planning a trip
Thats cool. Yep but check the website if you want to do the catacombs, its only 2/3 times a year
Szia köszönöm szépen videód.
You're welcome
I am very surprised, you never mentioned
Sir Frederick Thesiger
3rd Baron Chelmsford
Zulu war.
He is a Brompton cemetary resident.
I was gutted you missed him out.
Wow I need to go there and Highgate
Peaceful ❤
Hi, I love seeing your videos. May I know is this using GoPro ?
Beatrix Potters grave is there, too I think. And squirrels are everywhere ^^
Muy Lindos tus cementerios Quisiera Poder Conocerlos. Pero estoy muy Lejos😎✌
You are amazing 🎉😮😅
I am an Indian. It is beautiful. Every grave occupy more area. In lndia the area takes 6feet length width 3 feet.
Please inform me which century they were buried. Rev P Muthunayagam
Hi Reverend, approx. mid 1800s. Also 6feet here too
I thought the Tardis was the only time machine in Britain? Maybe the two are meeting up with Dr. Who! What a beautiful place to ride a bike. My husband and I both love to ride and that looks like a great place to do so. John Jackson was a bare fisted boxer. He had various athletes on the sides of his tomb which were removed.
Is this near West Islington, London? That's where my Mom's family is from! Where they are buried, is anybodies guess!!
Yes
Still are traveling.
The squirrels love garlic flavour peanuts in shells btw
Why isn’t the cemetery kept neat? That’s really sad it’s in such a grown up shape.
Bellissimo! Grazie ❤
Purtroppo l'erba non è tagliata come in cimiteri di Irlanda dove è tutto tagliato e curato
Your squirrels are so light grey. We have shiny black ones.
Me gusta mucho la historia de esta tumba, algún dia me gustaría conocerla ademas es de estilo egipcio y a mie gusta mucho la historia de egipto
I feel like youre gonna have to load up on peanuts for admission into the cemetery...lol
I did have some chilli coated ones but I didn't want to be cruel lol
I went to West Brompton once. Well, sort of around the West Brompton/Fulham area. Saturday 1/12/2018 it was. Didn't go to the cemetery.
Ahhh shame Martin, maybe next time ?
🧡🧡
New sub here i also do graveyard walks in gibraltar 😉

Just subbed...love your vids...I kinda wanna follow ya around with a weedeater and some d2 biological solution...lol
Welcome aboard! Be my guest, you'll be busy though 😂 Thanks for subbing, I just returned the favour ✌️
@@deadgoodwalks Awww thanks! Im gonna be busy just trying to watch some of your vids first...lol
Do they not take care of the weeds or tall grass? In America the cemetery’s are mowed and weed waked.
I'd love to know why myself
04:26 no egyptian hieroglyphics on the mausoleum door! None refer to the way the Egyptians wrote in the time of the pharaohs!!
It's true that the victorians didn't know what the hieroglyphics meant as there was no translation at the time. Hopefully it doesn't say anything rude, but I think it's just gibberish
Any chance of showing some of the war grave stones please
So sad that people dont come together to cut the grass at these cemeteries
Was this cemetery used in one of the Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr?
I enjoy your videos, but I wish you'd share a little more information about the various graves you feature. Often you just give a partial name and quickly move on without so much as the date of death.
💐💞🧚♂️
'squirrel!' literally....
Doesnt the cemetery have a master list of everyone buried in it? If they do you then can do research and add that to your talk.. And doesnt the city take care of the cemetery?
I guess a cemetery is as good a place as any to have a nice jog. 7:00

If possible read how old some are.❤️🇦🇺❤️
