This doesn't actually punish you more than just rapping at you. You can still savestate. It's nothing but a fun easteregg. Don't overreact and think I've somehow disabled the ability to savestate.
Remember that one time he save stated so he could do a cool BLJ and then loaded it even after he got it to do it cooler? And then he even loaded it more much later?
Kaze says this is nothing but an easter egg, but I have leaked info that this Yoshi will be the final (and unbeatable) boss if you savestate more than 5 times.
5:04 - I think that's meant to say "I'm gonna make sure that you game over." A little nitpick is all. I love this concept, since you're not disallowing the use of savestates for those who want to use them but you also make sure they gotta listen to Space Yoshi for a bit as recompense. It strikes a nice balance.
Here's my guess as to how this works: Two numbers are stored, 1 in normal RAM, and another in Cartridge RAM. Each frame the game's RNG function is used in them. When a save state is loaded, the numbers will be different, which then sets a flag to trigger the cutscene on level exit.
This is actually a really great way of handling savestating. Dont tell players that they cant, just let them know they arent truly testing themselves if they do. Great idea, and brilliant execution!
some games are bullshit enough for it to be warranted though I've been trying playing without save states and it's neat save states are just cool to learn the level and whatnot
Honestly, this is perfect! A fun easter-egg and a good incentive to lower your save-state usage! + I like the slight call-back to Space Land and very cool Yoshi design! The only problem I could see is some players could easily think that feature could lead to bigger consequences like how Resetti could delete your savefile on one of the games but besides that I think it's very smart!
Love your mods! Funny easter egg, a little bizarre in-universe to be threatened with a gun or broken kneecaps lol but hey. A comment after playing a lot of Star Road and Last Impact recently - I think that they'd be more fun with the difficulty tuned down a bit, ditto for this game here. There are some jumps where if the platforms were even 5-10% bigger, it'd make a big difference playability-wise. It's probably easy to make things too hard working in the engine as much as you do, but I feel like difficulty tuning could bridge the gap between "impressive hack" and convincingly more like a sequel to Mario 64. One of my partners plays Mario 64 through 100% annually, and while they love your hacks and want more, after the levels go from balanced/exploration-based, to trick jumps using the ins and outs of the physics engine, they can't play any more than that. Can't wait to see more content! Wonderful work, definitely don't mean to be too critical. :-)
I think I'd rather be dissed for savestating a star than have to do the star all the way through an not enjoy it because a certain attribute about it made overly difficult and no longer fun to play.
I love how ROM hacking has advanced to the point where the game actually detects a save state! By the way, I think this cool Yoshi is all talk (or rap in this case), like a certain mole from Animal Crossing.
@@KazeN64 thank you 😊 I'm glad to read it doesn't actually do anything to your save, I love the idea of this as an easter egg, and the raps were fun to read through 😊
@@KazeN64 is eeprom state not saved to the savestate file in PJ64? i think this might not work on bizhawk, tho tbh i havent used bizhawk in a long time
Please make him a secret bossfight where if you create and load new savestates a comedic amount of times within say a minute he gets mad and uses his gun.
Depends on how the detection works. People are suggesting values stored in places that the emulator does not preserve across savestates, but this seems more like a bug in those specific emulators. I'd guess that the game monitors joystick position changing too quickly between frames (or even shorter intervals mid-frame), as it is hard to preserve a smooth-looking analog motion with a splice. If I had the game, I would test if this Yoshi appears when I save and load while no input is being made. As for TAS implications, I will assume that this sequence adds too much unskippable delay to be desired in most circumstances. So people will either patch emulators to preserve the secret storage if there is any, or make sure to reduce joystick velocity to avoid sudden spikes (which would make it impossible to climb steep slopes like the stone pillar in JRB by oscillating the joystick between the neutral and forwardmost position every frame, as demonstrated by Pannenkoek2012 ua-cam.com/video/9dkwHlDC1LY/v-deo.html ).
Hey Kaze. Do you take game requests? Because I just had the best idea. Make a sequel to SM64 where all of Koopa's minions become friends with Mario. So the premise of the game is to play games together like hide and seek, follow the leader, tag, food war, catch up and so on. That would be a super fun multiplayer game, I think.
The Mr. Resetti of Save States. Makes me kinda think that his disses should go on and on and on as a means to try and dissuade you from using save states. His disses are so short now and his presense so unique and fun, that I feel this will only encourage the use of save states, not discourage their use at all.
That is a really cool idea, but is the weight of his speech necessary? To explain, I just can't help but think, that the rhymes are a bit extreme, if you get what I mean. It's still cute when he says "I despise...! ", but then he threatens you with the ultimate demise. He goes from zero to eleven, so even when he's from the rapper's heaven, it loses some of it's innocence, taking some of the idea's brilliance (to me!) . That may sound harsh, I know.
