This movie is fantastic, and very wise-written. It is all about the calling of God, and the difference between the divine and the human Will, and how to use it to reach what you are called for. I love it :)
Read the books, they are even beyter, especially the second book, which is the best in the series. Many more historical characters are present in it than in the movie, or the two Swedish movies. :)
I've been playing bannerlord and just remembered this movie. Aah how nostalgic. Mediavel, It's not a great age to live in but it truly is a great age for remembering.

Basically, the movie is based on a fictional series of books which in turn are based on historical facts. There was a battle at Gestilren with two opposing swedish factions (although back then, the word "swedish" didn't exist, they were either Västgötar or Östgötar; people of the swedish national regions of Västergötland and Östergötland) which were backed by various groups; Sverker of the House of Sverker of Östergötland was backed by Denmark, and the Folkung House of Västergötland (historically inaccurate, the house was the House of Erik, but the Folkunga house has sort of become the common name for the faction) was backed by norwegian freelancers as well as possible auxiliaries from the Uppland national region. The author makes an educated guess when he uses the fictional character of Arn to represent someone who most sources agree upon may have existed who brought superior military tactics to sweden from the Holy Wars in order to beat the much larger and more experienced danish-backed Sverker army. This movie is about the first steps toward a unified Sweden. Birger Jarl would continue with the consolidation.

It was the middle ages, everyone did. Hell invading arabs regularly took christian women as sex slaves. The crusades were certainly filled with atrocities but they were not particularly special or noteworthy in terms of how they were fought. This was a time before any real conventions existed for war, to the victor went the spoils. If you want to villify them then you would have to do the same to just about everyone else in that time period. Furthermore how exactly are the crusades different from what Muslim invaders did after spreading out of the Arabian Peninsula? How do you think the peoples in the lands they conquered viewed them? The Persians and Byzantines, even the Spanish and almost the French had they not stopped the invasion of Western Europe at Tours? The Crusades were originally called for in response to a plea for aid from the Byzantine Emperor who was losing territory to the turks, did he not have a right to fight back? What do you think the people in the region were before the Arabic invasions? They were predominantly Christian, and when a city resisted they paid the price. So yes, the Crusaders were bloodthirsty murderous zealots, just like pretty much everyone else at the time.
