When Paul Giamatti screams "A WOOL MERCHANT" you can sense the anger and frustration in his voice. You can feel his anger of being questioned by a simple merchant when he is the divine ruler. Superb acting.
He probably practiced a lot for this scene. If I was a ruler in this period that obtained his position through blood I would’ve been genuinely insulted that a wool merchant questions my faith

Most Americans can't pull off an English accent so convincingly. Giamatti is one of a few that can do so without going comical & cringy stereotypical with it.
Paul Giamatti's performance was so good that he didn't actually look like King John but his brother King Richard the Lionheart. I mean if John were like that, the barons would have accepted that he really is the right hand of God and the chosen lineage of noble Aquitainian or Angevin leadership of the Plantegenets that quelled the barbarism of the Norman/Anglo Saxon "scandinavian" barbarian past of Britain and instead made her "noble" for they are French or "Franks", "'Successors of the Roman Empire" under the Pope.
He was the best thing about the film. His performance really sums up the frantic, murderous arrogance of our Norman overlords at that time, unable and unwilling to understand the English have historically had a somewhat different view of kingship.
True, though the actual Barons War that led to the Magna Carta was fought by those very same frantic, murderous, and arrogant Norman overlords against King John.
