@@miked8227 Sure. Not all lions can be so intimidating. But in this case they think twice before attacking after ovserving the deadly punishment he is capable of inflicting.
Hey just to clarify to anyone in comments and also to the people talking in the video: This and other lions will almost never eat hyenas. Only if they are literally starving to death will they resort to eating hyenas. This kill was exclusively a show of power or a display of dominance over the hyenas who were pestering him. Lions rarely will eat hyenas or other predators for that matter. Notice a couple of things here. The lion and the hyenas share the same prey menu, essentially. This is why the lion did not eat the hyena. So when they compete, it is to fend off each other's competition. This lion likely wouldn't care about the hyenas if they were not bothering him, as he sees it as wasted energy. However, understand that they are both competing with one another for food, so the occasional show of force or even coming to actually killing a hyena, is completely necessary for this lion to maintain its position on top of the local food chain. Also, notice when the lion finally finishes off the hyena, it holds it up and turns to show the hyenas that he killed one of theirs. This is again a display of dominance. He is showing the hyenas that he is not above killing one of them to, again, remain on top. After this, and walking away, the hyenas confirmed the kill and began to scatter. So let's answer a few questions. 1) why did the lion not kill more? Because the lion would rather not waste energy doing so if he doesn't have to. In this situation, with so many hyenas and no other lions to support him, an absolute show of force was necessary to ward them all off. Hyenas, being pack hunters, are incredibly persistent, and with numbers upwards of 30+ like here, their courage is slightly buffed. With fewer hyenas, this would likely have not ended in a death, for the hyenas would have been scared off sooner. 2) Why did the hyenas only scatter after realizing the lion killed one of the pack? Well this is exactly what the show of force is for. They will be as persistent as they need to to try and defend their own place in the food chain, but not to the point of death, like a male lion will. This is an interesting difference between lions and lionesses, lionesses will often be scared off by even just a few hyenas, but a single male lion is known to chase off many hyenas - 30+ in this case. The difference is not only in the sheer size and power difference between lions and lionesses, but also their demeanor. A lioness will generally avoid confrontation, out of fear of injury, but a male lion will literally fight to the death for what he believes is his - whether it be food, the pride, territory, or even just his place in the ecosystem, as the dominant predator. The hyenas, as persistent as they are, know this of male lions and (usually) will avoid them. In this situation, the facade of "strength in numbers" bit the hyenas in the ass, and bit the dead one in the throat. End all, think of this as a power dynamic that is constantly being fought for. The lions generally come out on top, and this video shows exactly why. Hopefully anyone reading this learned something!
He doesn’t eat predators like other big cats do. But he wanted to show them and rub it in their face that he only kills them because he hates them. He is the king.
Notice that it took less than 10 seconds for the lion to inflict a mortal wound. Thats why he does it. To let each individual hyens know, "I can kill you before any of your fellow hyenas can drive me off" And look at the effect. There are 30 hyenas near him; if they swarm him they could kill him. But they dont
@@artyfhartie2269 Actually the only thing male lions do all day is kill hyenas and perhaps, would be usurpers to their throne. Then they send the females to run their asses ragged killing prey and then they barge in to eat their share first. After which they hump whichever lioness happens to be in heat that day. Sounds like king behavior like to me
So they can get up to 190 lbs, I did not realize that, that is pretty damn big, and makes a large pack even more intimidating. Nobody’s riding one, a small horse goes 750lbs up to around 1200 lbs for the ones I ride. Environmental evolution is beautiful!
Hyenas harass and will kill lionesses. The male lions often with go after the hyenas to kill, not even for food. Most often they target the matriarch of the clan to disrupt its unity and power. That’s why just killing her will temporarily cause the clan to back down.

The most funny there are people not hyenas. All those bastards would have been moaning about poor zebras but do nothing to help lions and other predators.
Amazing footage. What’s worth mentioning too is that the Spotted Hyenas not only outnumber him, but they are actually large animals in themselves. They can weigh up to 170 pounds, and have incredible biting force. It’s similar to being harassed by 30 large wolves. Yet the male lion shows pure confidence, and as someone else mentioned, even feeds on his kill while his back is turned to them. He’s a mature male, likely in his prime, and he knows it. I just wonder if he has a pride of his own, or if he’s on his own right now, hoping to secure one.

Those hyenas would just as soon kill him given the chance. They injured the lion biting him…they have the strongest bite force!
@@gaylebrown5778I Don't Think So !!!😏
Hey just to clarify to anyone in comments and also to the people talking in the video: This and other lions will almost never eat hyenas.

Sometimes they eat them. You can watch on UA-cam a video of two male lions eating a hyena.
He is not a king. Kings pick their asses, do f##k all and get looked after. Lions work their asses off all the time
@@artyfhartie2269 Actually the only thing male lions do all day is kill hyenas and perhaps, would be usurpers to their throne.
Then they send the females to run their asses ragged killing prey and then they barge in to eat their share first. After which they hump whichever lioness happens to be in heat that day. Sounds like king behavior like to me

That Lion was pure BOSS!!! 20+ hyenas shaking in their skin and the lion didn't even call for help with his thunderous roar. He strutted with his back to them and then went and killed one just to prove a point
the narrative you create in your videos is captivating!
I love how the lion was looking at the camera man almost like he was putting on a show for us. I always say you'd be surprised on how smart animals really are.
Yup..Lion was thinking "Put this on UA-cam, I'll bet you'll get millions of views"
The hyenas were aware of the cameras too...At 4:42 hyenas looking at the cameras thinking, "Damm, now everyone watching us getting punked" lolol
Look at how stupid the humans are , thinking the lions will not attack them in their open vehicles because they are too stupid to realize they make good eating !
Yep, the smartest ones choose NOT to communicate with humans!😂
@urmom8818
No. The Chase started far away. The King led thise stupid Hyenas TO COVER. You can actually watch him notice the gap from a distance then lead them all into that gap at trot, then turn and kill one. Then go back the way he came. Cars or trees, the King would have used whatever. ❤
Wow never seen bravery like that in any wildlife documentary, my heart was pounding...no doubt the king amazing
But then in other videos the hyenas or even the buffalos kill the lion
@@ミゲルアヤラ why not in this video? The matter is only about this video not other trash elsewhere
@@beinghumane4443 Trash or not trash the lion is not king
@@ミゲルアヤラ buffalos are literall over a 100 and 3 times heavier than a lion. Hyenas only kill lionesses and young lions, and only when outnumbered

Man i thought i was going to see the homie fall. The fact he stood his ground AND walked away with some free protein is insane!
That's undoubtedly the king of the jungle. As a big fan of cats, I find tigers powerful, and arguably the most beautiful looking of them all, but lions have something special. A commanding presence, display of authority and confidence that is unrivaled, even when outnumbered by their enemies. No wonder the King of Kings is also referred as the "Lion of Judah". What other animal could better represent power and majesty?
There is nothing like seeing a lion maul or kill another animal. It's vicious and something to fear
A king but not of the jungle lol
@@SkidogMedia No,that's balou
And conversely, Peter described the enemy the same way: ' Be [a]sober, be [b]vigilant; [c]because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.'
@@mickwalsh8136 what?
No fear, not try to run infront of 30+ Haynes that's why lion call the king 👑👑
Salute to brave heart of lion
How’s a lion turning his back to 30 hyenas😂 he really doesn’t respect them
Lion's entire blood is "disrespect" to anything living around it hahaha
Lions are the psychopaths of the big cats. They really just don't care.
Hyenas : there’s 30 of us
Lion : 30 victims
Hyenas "You go.. no you go.. no you go.."
Lion "Hold my Beer"
Lol 😂😂😂😂
humans: hold my beer, while we make lions and hyenas fight.
Thought he can’t escape that number of hyena, no matter how many he catches he’d grow tired eventually. Then he made a point by ripping that hyena apart and still able to defend. Hyena are very social animals, the lion knew it would freak them out.
Thank you to the filmmakers. Extraordinary footage.
You’re anthropomorphizing. The lion isn’t trying to “freak” anyone out. He doesn’t even know what that means. He had a chance to go for the kill and he took it. That’s all he knows. Kill or be killed.
