    An alarm hack I’ve made before was to take an empty soda can and drop a few coins inside it then loop some dental floss through the pull tab or around the screw top to make a hanger. Then I hang it on the door knob. If someone moves the handle you will hear it. It’s cheap and uses things you can easily find or may already have with you!

      Great tip to make a rattley noise can. I shall file that mentally in case I have any more hotel stays - never know what each day is going to bring. . Hanging loops - I've found cable ties can make good loops for hanging things on hooks., or over hanging rails to take bag hanging hooks.

    I go low tech- I put a chair up against the door.
    Works. Once when I was in my room relaxing someone (without knocking or calling out "housekeeping") pushed the door and it hit the chair which stopped the intruder.
    I called the front desk immediately to report the attempted intrusion.

    Glad there was nothing sinister in your in-room interruption! Some good advice there - I always bring at least one door locking mechanism with me when I travel. When I get in the room, the first thing I do is turn the dead bolt and flip the latch, even if I'll just be in there for a minute. It's so automatic I don't even think about it, it is second nature (I do the same thing every time I come back into my own home too.) One tip for hotel rooms that might be full of smoke: When I stay somewhere, I leave my outdoor shoes/boots just inside the door and put on slippers, just as I do in my own home. When I take those shoes off, I quickly glance at the exit map on my hotel door and place my shoes down with the toes pointing in the direction I need to go to leave. That way, if the hallway was filled with smoke and I couldn't see, I would still know which way to go. In the same vein, I always pack a bandana, which (among other things) can be used as a makeshift fire mask, along with swim goggles in case I need to protect my eyes from noxious fumes (they take up much less space than safety goggles). And I slip a fire blanket in my personal item carry on. That may seem like overkill, and thank God I have never had to use it, but it takes up very little room and could literally save your life.

      I started doing this years ago when I traveled with our teenagers, who didn’t want to share a room with us. I made them walk and count the number of doors between their door and the stairs. They hated doing it-but now that they are adults they still do it. And this summer, I went to England by myself for a conference. Imagine my surprise when the fire alarm went off at 5 am! Because I had already located the stairs earlier, I knew how to get downstairs. It was a false alarm (!!!) but I was so glad I really could get myself out in an emergency! Thanks for this video. I place a chair behind the door and a door stop under it. That way no one can use a long hanger to unlock the door handle from under the door. I know from experience how easy it is to use a long hanger to unlock the door handle. I stayed at a hotel and the battery died on the door lock. A hotel repairmen used a long hanger to unlock the hotel door handle by putting it under the door and latching on the inside door handle to unlock it. It was shockingly easy!

    Cheap doorstops that don't grip on the (tiled) floor. I have a roll of non slip matting, it looks like mesh and is fully flexible., it holds plates on metal or plastic/slippery trays, stops them moving around. A square of that under the door stop may help? I carry a square with me, it's great for keeping things in place on the pull down tray in trains. The hotels I go to (thankfully) have that added lock feature that keeps the door from opening completely. I always test them out before doing anything else. Then I check the mirrors in the bathroom for those two-way ones. For rooms that have connecting doors, if the person on the other side is not part of my company, I make sure to keep my side locked and I jam the door with a chair or the luggage rack.

    Do you worry about cameras being in the room and if so what do you do about it ?

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  2 місяці тому

      @@shirleyedwards9819 I would say I don’t overly worry about it, but I do check. For example, the ceilings in this room or like 10 feet high so if there was a camera up inside of the smoke detector or something, I’d never be able to reach it. I do check mirrors and I make sure that I turn things like clocks facing the bed around so that they’re facing the wall or put things like scarves over top of things, but there’s only so much you can do. Honestly, I owned three Airbnb‘s before and I never had any cameras so I believe most people don’t but if you’re really paranoid about it I’m sure there are gadgets that could help you, but I just don’t use them.😊

    I thought hotel doors automatically locked? At least, the ones I've gone out and then realized I don't have the card LOL.
    Once on a cruise, my husband went for a late night snack. My door handle started jiggling. It's not unusual to try to open the door before the card activates the lock. Then I heard a child telling his Dad this wasn't his room... wrong floor...Dad seemed a little drunk.
    We always check the emergency exit plaque! So important! Power can go out for other reasons too.
    I always take a flashlight or some sort of rechargeable light. I'm not going to drain my phone using the light on it.

      The hotel doors do automatically lock when they close. But this person had a master key to get in because they’re custodial staff. If I had had that little blocker on the door, she wouldn’t have been able to come in but still the policy should announce that someone’s at the door so if I was standing there naked or something I could cover up.😅😳

    Beware of using bought used luggage - you could have bought something that has traces of drugs in it. Then you and the sniffer dog will have a very close relationship. I've taken this from another channel. - a small roll of duct tape - emergency repair. If your luggage gets damaged, or a zip breaks. (I always put adjustable or ratchet straps round my case, no matter where I'm going, keeps the case/bag together. .
