  • Here I give a narrative of the history of the Foxtail Palm, its success in Florida, and its disadvantages. Enjoy. I did not note the seed, it is the size of a golf ball and easy to germinate.

    I have over sixty 40 foot triple foxtails in Palm Beach, FL. Just fertilize twice a year with 8-2-12. Zone 10 or 11 in FL.

    Do not handle the seeds until
    they are cleaned of the pulp. The fleshy covering is high
    in Oxalic acid and can cause burns. Soak in warm water,scrub off the skin,and treat with Hydrated Lime solution before planting them.
    I experienced burned hands
    after picking up seeds from
    the ground. The lime water will make them safe to touch.

    Your video content is exceptional- thank you. I just planted 2 foxtails in San Diego CA about mile from ocean. How do i prevent the leaves from browning? Is Palm Gain, epson salts and morganite nitrogen mix a good fertilizer for foxtail?

    Hello!
    Where was this video taken, Christian?
    I mean is it in a nursery or some kind of public place?
    I am asking because it is possible that I can go to Florida next summer, and once I am there I would like to take/buy as many palms as I can.
    I have been searching for palms on street view in Miami, there are so many of them growing on the streets, bringing hundreds/thousands of seeds, often many seedlings grow at their bases.
    My question is, do you know some places where I would be able to pick up seedlings? Do you know if it is legal at all to pick up even a seed from public places (I don't know US laws - LOL)? Also it is often difficult to decide which green areas belong to the public and which of them are private property (or the affected plant at least).
    Thank you!

    I am watching a foxtail with ripening seed. Do they get yellow or change color, how do I know when the seed is ripe and ready to harvest for groing them out?

    I also fell off a ladder due to the seed pod... Seems so light when attached to the tree. But when cut off and weight comes on your hands.. you are surely coming down the ladder.. therefore I remove the inflorescence as soon as the flowers have opened..

    I currently have 2 foxtails in my yard in St Augustine FL. One of them is grown to about 5 feet and is a single trunk. The other is a juvenile triple that I picked up in West Palm Beach and personally drove up. They both are doing well and are sprouting healthy heart leafs. What should I fertilize them with to ensure they grow thick and fast?

      Home Depot sells a palm fertilizer which is 8-4-8. I use 5-5-5 because I get it for free at my volunteer work, and my foxtails are nice and thick. I hope this was helpful.

    any tips on germinating the seeds? I'm seeing quite a few recommendations for scarification of the seeds and sowing them a few inches deep. if there is any truth to this how do i go about scarring the seed?

    • @TheCfkingfish
      @TheCfkingfish  7 років тому +7

      I will tell you that I have never scarred a single seed in my life - there may be a few temperate species that would benefit from it, but I will go over that. Foxtails are larger seed, so if you think about it, in habitat, they wouldn't have the chance to be buried naturally a few inches deep. All you would need to do is clean the fruit off as it is a germination inhibitor, and plant it 2/3 into the soil, or any media you want to use. Crank up the heat to 90F or 30C+ and ripe seed will gerinate within a month.

    What size pot should I germinate the foxtail seed in? Does a simple cactus/palm mix suffice? Thanks!

    • @TheCfkingfish
      @TheCfkingfish  7 років тому +1

      Halley Ferrell Yes, use a well draining mix that has plenty of coarse material and perlite. because the seeds are bigger, they can handle more time between water and they'll be easier to pull out by hand in a looser mix.

    I have a ripe fruit and some that dried in the sun. Are the dried fruits useable to plant?

    • @TheCfkingfish
      @TheCfkingfish  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, you can peel the fruit off and it will reveal the seed.

    Is it worth my while planting a couple of these in Lakeland or is it too risky? My spot would be in the corner of a fence with much and rock garden beneath. The houses are fairly close together also. The last 3 winters have been very mild. What are your thoughts?

      @@BManStan1991 I did not although I see a few in my neighborhood that have done well for a couple years now. My Christmas palm did get pretty fried over the major freeze this past December. I have come to the conclusion that the fox tails are more cold hardy then the Adonidias
