Alan Watts (1915-1973) who held both a master's degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best known as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. He authored more than 20 excellent books on the philosophy and psychology of religion, and lectured extensively, leaving behind a vast audio archive. With characteristic lucidity and humor Watts unravels the most obscure ontological and epistemological knots with the greatest of ease. - deoxy.org/watts.htm
"Inability to accept the mystic experience is more than an intellectual handicap. Lack of awareness of the basic unity of organism and environment is a serious and dangerous hallucination. For in a civilization equipped with immense technological power, the sense of alienation between man and nature leads to the use of technology in a hostile spirit---to the "conquest" of nature instead of intelligent co-operation with nature". An Allan Watts video a day, help keeps the insanity away.
well said mate, well said
I’m fucking insane as a fucking shit cock friend.
Joan Hess we're all like perfect clouds, as there is no mishapped clouds. Nothing wrong with your insanity. If you think something is wrong with your insanity, then that is your game
An Alan Watts video a day, let's insanity peacefully play.
Haha laughed hard 🤣😊
it's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything
true and lovely :))
***** keep that up and you'r gonna get hit in the ear, bucko
Greyz174 Wow! Right you are. This is the 'Kali/Durga' thing. Meaning- there is always proportional destruction to new construction. Like the horrendous mess of a house renovation. All the crap and such. But look what you get!
+Greyz174 one step closer to hitting bottom.
The thing is you dont have anything to lose in first place. You just think that way you can own something and then you have fear of loss.
This simple 3 minute lecture helped me recover from horrible anxiety two years ago.
That is great news well done. I hope I can overcome anxiety i struggle with it daily
why don't you just fix what you're anxious about ?
Power of words!
+mlongpre100 You obviously have never experience anxiety before. Maybe you're being sarcastic?... The problem is just that, the need to fix and control everything, like this video says. Sometimes you can't "fix" it and you have to let go. That took time for me to learn and accept.
poledancer212 It's helping me right now.
This man is so wise. We are so unbelievably lucky to have so much recordings of him.
FreeMind only person who makes sense
There are a lot of people that makes sense not only Alan Watts... Jiddu Krishnamurti, Terence McKenna, Ram Dass, etc.
The only thing you control is your attitude. Alan Watts is a wise man.
No need to try and control that either, if you give it all up and become one with the divine principle then your attitude will be taken care of for you ! I truly believe this is the way to find inner peace
@@jw1312 Beautifully said... "Letting go, is gaining control "😊
‘In giving away the control, you got it. You got the kind of control you wanted’
I’ve listened to this a thousand times and it has massively helped my obsessive behaviour. Thank you Alan
holy shit this was so obvious once i heard it and yet i never would have thought of this in a million years
The authenticity of your comment is so organic that it is iconic.
"It was so obvious once I heard it, and yet I never would have thought of this in a million years" --Greyz174, 2014
Live 2Learn haha I agree. Weird how that works
"let's see what you're gonna do."
And this is why we are so unhappy in this society that promotes individualism and competition. It goes absolutely against our true nature.
Paco Márquez but you’re important. Don’t be so modest. Don’t confuse yourself with individualism
Important, with regard to what, regarding to what values, and for whom? and what is the definition of 'important'? "Modesty" is very wrongly regarded to be weakness or insignificance in Western culture. Worse still, avoidance of modesty through bad advice such as given by Schroeder easily turns into arrogance and snobbish behavior. Alan Watts and all Eastern philosophies and teachings that he mirrors is for extinguishing and relinquishing the ego. "Being important", on a collective level, paves the way for societies and foreign policies to be driven by hubris. Check any historical archive, narration or academic literature... More often than not, attitude is the problem.
Obsessed about powering over the other, other being another family member, a "friend" in the neighbourhood or in another city, country... Obsessed about control and domination and narcissistic self-love that literally kills and maims so as to be "important" or to educate and civilize the other at the barrel of a gun... This is the classic white man's burden as the history nerds would quickly tell you... "You are important"... yes, self-worth is necessary to basic survival and not to commit suicide and happily contribute to common good and laughter. However, the West de-emphasizes the society and sanctify the individual too much... you are important? old wine in new bottles... what good did you bring to this world to be important?
According to the philosophy of Zen, Tao or to the outlook of Alan Watts' books and videos at large, you are important like and as a tree is to the world... nothing more, nothing less... but if you do not get aware of your urges, emotions and thoughts and lose the space between your real self that is to get aware of your thoughts and emotions, then you become your desires and irrational fanatical urges... that may go as far as to the Hitler's imagery and vision of the world. Hitler was definitely an important guy for himself.
World domination is not unrelated to how one perceives himself/herself and others. Just look the at the state of world mostly misled by Western psychosis of control... Self-anointedly Important and aggressive men of the West is outright predator that is happy at its sheer inhumanity and killings through which he becomes important... A society shorn of all values, nothing of good substance but competition, individualism, hedonism and materialism.... not that the latter ones are always bad, but their championing to the neglect of other values that needs to be added to fine-tune such as sharing, respect, compassion, understanding, compromise and law-abidence, and yes of "modesty" leads to destruction and a self-anointed sick importance... that is way below even animals... Alan Watts, although passed away, is still an eye-opener to the cultures who are unconsciously very controlling and domination- and violence-loving... Unlearn your wrong tenets...
Mr Schroeder, the video may be deeper than you may think it is. Unrefined, or lets say, out of tune individualism, control, competition and powering over nature, animals and other humans goes against our true nature. You seem to be desperately and "importantly" embedded in the problem itself. Please do not poison Marquez who truly got the gist of the video. If you are not open to question your social conditioning even a bit, why do you wander around these videos anyway?
@@caglarization ❤️🦄
This piece came at a perfect time in my life. It helped me to find the thorn that was poisoning my life for years and years.
I love people and sincerely want them to be happy. Yet I am afraid of them and need to control them to feel safe. To love is to admire, to love is to allow people to be spontaneous and beautiful, to be themselves. This paradox of needing to control the uncontrollable was giving me a huge internal conflict.
I still have a long way to go but first time in a long time I feel like I finally found the right path.
Being comfortable with uncertainty is a key to peace :-)
Thank you. This is something I will need to embrace to move forward.
I'm on the same path, it's a struggle, but this is the source of relief
You're a good soul my friend. Thanks for those words. I needed to hear that today. You're growth as a spiritual human being is passed onto me and I'll piggyback off that and take strength in knowing I'm not alone in this and it's possible to get to the other side. Love you friend. Thanks for being open and willing to grow and share your struggle.
Control is an illusion. Of all the lifetimes spent in contemplation, this is the one truth that permeates all time.
and my third eye sheds tears of joy in the fact that letting go is the key to enlightenment. letting go of this material plane. letting go of all matter. letting go of fear and control but accepting love into your heart and soul. Love is the answer. Love is the key to an eternity of happiness.
That very example of telling yourself you have to get up at 6 o clock came true for me last week..and woke to that very minute 06.00. My battery was flat on my phone so couldn't set the alarm before bed, but I was amazed at how this happened.
Andrew Beadle The more you trust your unconscious mind/nervous system and the more you trust the rest of the universe the more it works for you as an ally.
U should have just charged it.
I think I found my medicine for recently prevailing nihlistic/cynical thoughts. I like him more and more with every new quote I manage to find or listen to.
Power is the illusion. Harmony is the truth. People live their whole lives trying to control everything. Everything from family to their surroundings. Letting go of the illusion of power/control allows you to truly enjoy life. Not having to worry about every last detail. Not living in perpetual fear. This is what those who want to Control humanity fear the most. People letting go.
#harmony

well said. totally agree.
As a mother of adult children this is so powerful.
man, sometimes i wish i could just get a hug from Alan when i really need it... and tonight is one of those times :(
This concept parallels how I now choose to invest my heart and soul in my soul mates.
"This seems a sort of paradox to say this, but the principle of unity, of coming to a sense of Oneness with the whole of the rest of universe, is not to try to obtain power over the rest of the universe, that will only disturb it and antagonize it and make it seem less One with you then ever. The way to become One with the Universe is to trust It as another, as you would another, and say, 'Let's see what you're gonna do.'"
His books are even more fascinating. I am amazed what kind of humand mind is/was capable of putting so much sense on so little pages.
There's nothing he did that you can't do.
Where's the "Love" button ;-)
Way ahead of time, Alan understood that the effort itself is futile because if you have to make any effort at all you take away the chance for devine power or intervention. After all it takes care of you're breathing why you sleep, it can take care of everything else. ✌️ 💙
As I hear it, letting go of control, does not mean do nothing. It is to adapt and embrace. It is to know that you are surrounded by the mystical oneness of the world around you, and that the "real you" is as much a part of cause and effect regardless of your conscious course of action or lack thereof.
Adapt, grow, never stop learning. Become the strongest person that you can be mentally, physically, emotionally.
Very nice and something so many of us can learn from, to just trust and let go of controlling everything is a great source of happiness. Mindful greetings, Simple Happy Zen
Calms my soul listening to his philosophies!
There is deep power in powerlessness. How many people, on both a macro and a micro level, become victims of their own illusion of "power"? Trying to "control" can be quite stressful, allowing all kinds of negative emotions to enter your life and disturb its simple peace. As a believer in One God, I would say so many problems in life can be solved by trusting in the Creator, knowing one's limitations and trusting in the One Who created us and controls our lives but at the same time is Merciful and wills the best for us.
The concept of separation is the cause of ALL our problems, lacks and limitations, become the WHOLE by seeing through and dissolving the illusion of separate ego, and you have it all.
The music and images are amazing as they complement the words beautifully. Good job who ever did this. Your gift to the world is not going unnoticed.
"In giving away the control you've got it". I started laughing by how true that is from the first second.
Every human needs this message.
Thank you Maggie.
"Doesn't it astonish you that you are this fantastically complex thing. And that you are doing all of this but you never had any education in how to do it?" From the video "The Real you" from Alan. Summarizes beautifully the lesson of this video : D
These videos help me feel like I have overcome a lot, they make me feel wiser. I like Alan Watts.
Inspiring and insightful beyond belief! Amazing man!
I agree with the alarm clock thing. It has always worked for me before anyone else ever told me about. And I’m glad I just now discovered Alan Watts
Some months ago, I listened to a recording of Alan Watts where he said "You get it when you come to the point where you realize you can't control it"(or so, but that meaning).. and I could not believe and understand it completely. I thought..yes..that should be true, but how do I come to that point with a specific problem?
A few weeks ago, I discovered I have an OCD and finally and immediately I understood what he meant. I just can't control it and with this knowing and the acceptance for me WITH it and the acceptance I can't control it, I can. It's mindblowing. Thank you universe (and Alan Watts)!
Great to hear :-)
HDvids101 :) Love and peace to you!!
I am allowed a level of power and control and therefore there is a choice before me to engage. I can take part in life, in the act of creation though never absolutely control. I truly own nothing I see around me. A time will come when people may be humbled and corrected, if they had believed otherwise or even acted as though the truth were otherwise. There is a time to engage, to control only what is given to us and a time to recognise that a force greater than us is taking away whatever those things may be. I have seen ceaseless creation and destruction since I first knew anything. yet I have been asked to engage since I have appeared in this place with all the tools required for the game. So I play the game, I control what is given to me to control and hopefully I see the wisdom to attempt no more.
Astonishing, every single time. 🙏❤️
Thank you so much honestly I'm so happy I found this!!! Alan watts is my biggest inspiration!
Beautiful!
Also thank you for not making the music overpowering. Though I wouldn't mind a bit more Chillstep in here, and a bit louder, I do appreciate that you can clearly hear what he is saying. This is amazing, I'm actually so thrilled!
What a great video. Love the idea. Thanks Alan!
One problem with depression is that you try too hard to rectify the problem and by that, we focus on every small detail and try to change its operation. We need to relax and delegate more but obviously that is easier said than done when your perspective of everything is bleak.
It's almost like it cannot be done. You try to see things the same way as everyone else, but it doesn't seem right to you. Every part of your mind is pulling you back into doubt about everything, no matter how hard you try to struggle out of it. Thats how I imagine it to be for people with depression. You can't look at the world any other way other than your own bleak, dark way (that life and everything in it is ultimately worthless).
depression is killing my spritiuality every now and then. no matter how much I learn from Alan Watts and other thinkers, no matter how much I meditate, no matter how much I love life - when depression strikes I seem to have no chance to deal with it whatsoever. it has cost me so many precious years of my life
Have things got any better??..even i struggle with it sometimes...it also leads to escapism sometimes....after a certain point mund just wants to shut itself down.
let go of what u can't control
I agree with that in principle. As it turns out, any energy put into an action in one direction will have a response in equal force in the opposite direction. I like to study chakras because it addresses this principle. Nothing is black or white, it is always both depending from where it is looked at. Nobody is always good or always bad... Although there could be some overtones depending on environment (mental and physical). Cheers!
i cant sleep because i keep thinking, his words help me realize i can sleep, thank you Alan Watts )))
I’ve learned and been influenced more by Alan Watts than any professor I’ve ever had.
Thank you ! The idea with the song is great (+ the song + low volume editing).
I like listening to alan watt's philosophies.
Man...Alan Watts is THE best teacher I've ever had in my life.
Terrence McKenna is a close(very close) second.
Both these men fused massive intelligence with a sense of wit, humor, joy, and pathos.
I was raised Catholic, became 'born again' in highschool, and an atheist in college.
It wasn't until I let go of ALL religious concepts that my mind was open enough to look at reality with fresh innocent eyes.
Only when I let go of religion, did the aching beauty of life become crystal clear.
I Love lovee Loveeeeeee the way you did this video! Ty💖👊👏
I look forward to your videos, please keep them coming.
In other words, let go and give in to you.
Im amazed by this man. I cant get enough.
This message is what the world needs to know about. It could change how we treat each other and even end war for ever.
Cool, I can comment on a youtube video for the first time in like a month.
Alan Watts is one of the best. Definitely the most entertaining.
Wonderful! Thanks very much for this!

I absolutely love this vid, thanks for the upload.
Happy Birthday Alan.
Awesome !
wonderful teaching.
Thank your for the video
Awesome, thank you!
In giving away control in a loving relationship with the world, you got organic power, far more powerful than political power.
Relinquish power and trust others. Principle of unity and oneness is trust the universe.
Thanks Alan. 🌞🤩🍁😄😍😁🦋💪
Thanx for speaking to my situation here in Kenya
God job with the music on this one...perfect choice and volume

Exellent!
Powerful Alan Watts......
Thank you
Thank you HDvids101
INTERESTING VIDEO !!!
Beautiful vid! Thank you :)
Wow, thank you for your channel
Truly wonderful. Look up his lecture called 'the middle way', very insightful.
Those who allow fear to drive them, wind up powerless and often, helpless to grand demise often very directly from their own fearful creation.
Those who embrace Life, the Ups and the Downs, continue on. This life or the next, but the key is they live how they wish in this one.
And i totally agree with that affirmation, dear sir !
I love Alan Watts
thank you
I am suffering from OCD. This is good.
Powerful!!!
Yes sensei.
Love it
MsChrissybeast This is a common misunderstand. It's easy to think that "letting go" means lay down and just wait to die. But really all it means is to trust, there is a big difference. Now this is just one dimension of what "letting go" means to truly understand the rest, you must realize them yourself. But for a short comments sake I'll leave you with a quote with the hopes that it would make more sense to you "Last night I lost the world, and gained the unniverse" - JoyBell C
The best way I could explain it is, when one is rigid and attempts to hold on to his form he will eventually crash and break into pieces, when one is formless they can't crash and break into pieces. Though it is probably counter intuitive to think there is an exact meaning to it, its probably the only way to get anyone thinking in the right direction.

wow!
my grandma never had alarm clock yet we were never late when we went to see a doctor or something and had to wake up at 5am and so.. It always blew my mind
It makes sense..finally.
who in their right mind would give this a thumbs down?????
Do what's best for today without thinking about tomorrow because what's best for tomorrow is what's best for today.
wonderful
a very deep and interesting Video by Alan Watts
this is very great information he can share with the universe for us to wake up and see the truths of reality
u gone be my lil baby
This man has really reached Enlightenment....
Also very important to realise is that even the most unpleasant or 'evil' organisms are playing a vital role. You can not have 'good' people without 'bad' people. You're ALWAYS going to be coming across 'bad' folk, or 'lower frequency vibrations' or whatever you like to call them. For the absolutely fundamental reason that whatever position of perspective you are in life you can always look up, down and around, and to know what 'up' is necessarily requires the view of 'down' to exist.
i love alan

very deep tought...
Nice video! love the message. Thanks!
Well said
This reminds me of someone I know.
