I love how you “talk” to us as you think out loud about how you’re going to turn a piece.
I'm glad, thank you! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshopIf I didn't think out loud I'd never get anything done. 😂
An orchid would look so natural coming out of the piece 😍! They grow out of indentations and croches of living and dead trees. Your daughter is one lucky woman!
Thank you, Kristi! 😊
👍🏻
Yes, I agree. An orchid would be a great addition to this piece.
Tell you what, I've been fascinated by turning, but that video scared me. I definitely have a deeper respect for how quickly things could go way wrong.
Yeah, this one was a little frightening and took some patience. Thanks for watching! 😀
Hi Phil! I'm so glad you turn the weird and wacky ones. That way, the rest of us, who do the same, don't feel so alone. I think this turning would look great with a short, but spreading, plant. For Christmas, the medium, wider diameter candle, would look great surrounded by evergreen, and pinecones.
Great ideas, Stephanie, thank you! 😊
Omgosh I’m a nervous wreck watching you turn this one!!!!! It turned out terrific!! You’re a wonderful inspiration as I love doing the live edge and rustic looking pieces!!
Great, thanks, Mindy! 😊
“Welcome to the weird channel.” I love it. Thanks, Phil.
😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Daren & Theresa Thomas from Texas... VERY UNUSUAL PIECE!!!.. Phil your show is wonderful, the wood donations you receive from all your viewers is wonderful, everything came together making for flawless entertainment. Very enjoyable and glad you did not get hurt. Until next time Phil... TM
Thanks a lot, Tuffy! I don't usually get too scared turning odd pieces but this one did cause the hair on the back of my neck to do a little dance, now and then! 😊
THANK you Tuffy for the cool tool that allowed this to happen.
@@rickchapman3051 Thank You Rick Chapman... Phil is such a good sport with an open mind for new ideas. It has been a long time but where that idea came from while watching Phil turn I do not remember. I am glad Phil has put it to good use when needed. TM
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil another challenge overcome, and the result is fantastic. Who would have thought that anything so good could have come from that place. Yes I do agree with your decision to leave the top as created by nature, and I liked the centre you described as waves.Greatvjob.
@@johnwhite6899 Thank you, John! 😊
Glad you left the sides. You proved that a old dog can use new tools. Great piece.
😊
Glad to see you left it natural. Many of your videos I think they could be turned more but this one definitely looks better not turning the natural character away.
Thank you, Ron! 😀
Your problem-solving process is what I gain most from watching your excellent videos. I thought while watching “Just cut back those log ends and reduce the footprint of the piece. That way the beautiful gnarly interior will be the dominant design focus.“ Your design worked out in the end, with that foot on the straight side being the key. Your self deprecating humble brag on that was entirely justified.
Thank you, David! 😊
You are the Master of unusual and creativity. If it was not a challenge, it would not be Phil Anderson. I'm glad you kept the 'Wings'. Comment below. An Orchid would look very nice.
Thank you, Pete! 😊
Phil you never cease to amaze me. I'm always inspired by all the obstacles you've overcome to create your beautiful pieces.
Thank you, Lewis!😊
Phil, you always make me worry. The moment you brought that piece out I thought candle holder. By the end I thought the Christmas special candle holder. Just add a couple of red glass balls and your done. Nobody has anything like that, not even close. Even the inside of the branch looks like wax dripping. Thank you to your friends from Texas for entrusting it to you. No one feels wood like you do. You and that special candle holder are priceless. Thank you, Mavourneen
Thank you so much, Mavourneen! 😊
It’s a real piece of art! An air plant would fit the natural look!
Thank you, Marilyn! 😊
Hello Phil, you asked us to vote on whether to open the piece out to form a bowl or to leave its 'lips' intact. We vote, preserve the lips. They are an important part of what makes the piece interesting. And, candle holders are useful. It made me happy when you decided to just drill a hole big enough for a candle.
Oddly, it hadn't occurred to me that you might glue a base onto the piece. With my sense of humor I as imagining giving it little feet, like a clawfoot bathtub has little feet.
Jean says that a small cactus would be the perfect tenant for the 'candle-space', possibly even an air plant, since you don't have to water those. :-). She says that the piece already looks a bit alien, an alien-looking plant would complement it nicely.
Thanks for sharing your process!
Great ideas, Deirdre, thank you! 😊
Keep as much as you can - it look unique as it is - settle for the redesign!!!
😊
I'm so glad you didn't cut any of the beauty off the top edge. This is a beautiful piece and you can put anything or nothing in it.
Thanks so much, Jean! 😊
A one of a kind creation. I was on the edge of my seat watching Phil turn the inside. By the way Phil, your daughter just called me and told me she wanted me to have this piece. "I Wish". An absolute world class masterpiece.
LOL! Thank you, Jerry! 😊
Phil, you've done some strange and incredible pieces over the years but this one has got to be near the top of the list! I'm glad you didn't cut off the wings, maybe you heard me yelling not to! In addition to your turning skills, I love your commentary during the project. This video must win the award for the most "I really don't know" comments of all of your videos. They made the video even more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your talents and personality.
Haha, even I noticed the "don't know" comments while editing this, Tom! It was a challenge to be sure! Thank you so much for your fun comment! 😊
Daren Thomas certainly knew the BEST person to send that log too and Phil, you surely proved him right. What a Wonderful piece that now is. Your daughter will be proud to own it I think. (If not, can I PLEASE be first in the queue for it?)
You were right when you suggested a plant would look good in it, maybe a small trailing plant of some kind. Another Masterpiece, Phil. You'll have a job to top this one. Cheers from UK.
Thank you very much, Cliff! 😊
Whew, so glad you didn’t destroy the natural edges. A beautiful piece.
Thank you! 😊
Mr Phil, I was genuinely scared for your safety with this one. I'm just really glad you got through this piece unharmed.
Anyway, this is quite the unusual piece. I've never seen anything quite like it before. I don't think anyone else would've done this piece any better justice. Anybody else might've gone to extremes with this piece. But I love it because, as usual, your design celebrates the nature of the piece. Your design was simple. But, sometimes, that's all that's needed. In this case, anything more would've been too much.
In other words, it's simply perfect. And it's simply beautiful.
Thank you for your kind comment, Les! 😊
Hi Phil I'd like to thank Daron and Theresa from Texas for this piece of magnificent and unusual wood. I don't know how I'd turn it but as your a masterwoodturner you did a spectacular job turning this piece. What a beautiful colour it is with the finish on it. I'm really pleased you never cut any of it away as it's too beautiful for that to be done. I like how you explain everything to us, your explanations are really helpful. This is a really piece of art well turned I just love it. It is up in the top 5s of my favourites. Take care, stay safe Amanda xx
Wow, thank you, Amanda! 😊
Well Phil, I guess one could call this, from an 'Art Perspective', a Minimalist wood turning. I truly feel you have produced an an absolute 'Masterpiece' for all to enjoy'. I really feel that there was virtually nothing else you could have done, you made all the right 'moves & decisions' on this one my friend. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Thank you, my friend! 😊
That's nice, Phil. You made the right decision to not turn away the top of that opening. Look for a pillar candle at the store.
Bill
Thanks, Bill! 😊
You absolutely did the right thing with regards the turning Mr Anderson, leave it as natural as possible and I can see a lovely cactus or a large succulent sitting in the centre. Jane ❤
Maybe I can't kill a cactus, Jane! 😊
Hello Phil! I'm sorry I presented you with a tough one, but I'm also very glad you rose to the challenge! As always, your work turned out beautiful and I'm glad I was able to contribute in a small way. I have acres of Texas soft and hard woods and the next time I see something that says "Phil could do something with this" will send it on it's way, God bless and thank you for the hours of entertainment. Daron from Texas.
Oh, man, Daron, just don't make it so dang hard on me! LOL! Thanks again for sending it, I'm glad I had the opportunity and I'm glad it's over! 😊
This was certainly a challenge! Its VERY UNUSUAL AND VERY BEAUTIFUL! Im really glad you didnt cut the outer lips of the opening! Its just so TERRIFIC! Try putting a little glass dessert bowl, like for jello, in the opening instead of a narrow candle holder. You can usually find those little glass pudding or jello cups/dessert bowls in thrift stores or even a Dollar store. You sure did an outstanding job! Thanks, Phil!❤❤❤
Thanks for the idea, Texana! 😊
I like this, it belongs in the front window of an ocean cottage. 💜🙏
Or a mountain cabin!
😊
I could see a house cat taking interest in it.
You're a skilled craftsman and artist. No matter what the piece, you always make it into something beautiful. Thank you.
😊
Thank you for not taking off that lip. It looks so nice. Sometimes, the best pieces are the ones that you do the least amount of work on.
Thank you, John, for taking your time to watch and comment! 😊
Hi Phil, I have just broken my personal best time of holding my breath,
I can't think of any one else that would have done what you did.
Brilliant my friend.
Take care Phil.
Cheers, Huw
Haha, me too, Huw! Yeah, it was a bit scary at times. It did turn out OK so I'm satisfied. Thank you, buddy! 😀
Phil, I think stopping when you did feels right to me. You were making me nervous trying to cut more on the inside. I normally watch you on our TV where I, of course can't comment. So, I had to pull it up on my tablet and give you my opinion. It looks good! Keep up the good turning! Be safe,
Thank you very much, Pop! 😊
Fair play Phil, how many of us would have given up and turned away more of the natural beauty. Another amazing piece from Shady Acres.
😊
Hi Phil...
I wish that I could say that I enjoyed watching this video but I can't...
I spent the whole time just worrying about you hurting yourself on that deadly spinning log...
I was so relieved when you stopped...
Beautiful natural piece...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Haha, I was right there with you, Andy! When I watched it back I was on the edge of my seat! It was bad during the turning, but not that bad! Thanks, buddy! 😊
It might have fought you all the way Phil but, as always, you pulled it off 🌞
😊
What a unique piece of wood. Glad you kept the biggest part part of it's natural shape!!!!
Thanks, Ray! 😊
I'm glad you didn't cut any more of it away than you did
A Beauty
😊
If I saw that I would not turn that, no clue. You made something out of a pretzel. The base was a clever idea.
Thanks, Doc! 😊
Try, try, try again and it always turns out beautiful whatever you do. I'm so glad you didn't cut anything from the top. It looks like lava erupting out of the branch. So unique.
Thank you, Nancy! 😊
I've never seen anything like it! What a treasure!
I see a beautiful natural looking pot with succulents in it.
It would be a center piece on a table or fireplace, etc.
Tough piece, but it turned out awesome!👍😊
Great ideas, Sunshine, thank you! 😊
A nice cobalt blue wine bottle with some led lights would look stunning in this lovely piece of art. Thanks for another fantastic project Phil stay safe kind regards.
Thanks so much 😊
Oh my goodness, my heart was in my mouth watching the turning bit, phew you still have all your bits, LOL. So glad you didn't turn the lips, its lovely and natural looking. Perhaps a 2.5' medium height plain glass tumbler and put in battery LED twinkly lights. Whatever you decide, it will be a talking point. Thanks for sharing Phil (hugs).
Thank you, Jewels! 😊
Before watching: burn, baby, burn!
LOL!
I think I love it! You’re a miracle worker, I’m glad you didn’t open the top.
Thank you, Ken! 😊
Soo glad that you saved the "lips", Phil. It's beautiful!
😊
What a challenge Phil. Good call not removing the top of log.
You could always turn a nice weed pot for dried or artificial flowers.
Thank you for sharing.
Good idea, Carl, thanks! 😊
You almost always surprise me. That's one of the things I really like about your work. Who knew that there are so many different ways to approach turning...
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
That 'turned' out great. I think the most natural one yet, Phil.
Thank you, Laura! 😊
I'm glad you left the sides even if that caused it to be scary at times. It turned out beautiful
Thanks, Carolyn! 😊
PHIL!!! LANGUAGE!!! You set an all time record for personal put downs. Really, calling yourself an idiot? Nope, inappropriate.
Your work on this piece was at the very highest level. So difficult! I think you did a perfect example of how I often talk about turning. I say "The finished piece is in there, your job is to listen to the wood and find it." Love the final result. I think it's a personal best for you. Medium height candle looks best to me.
Thank you so much, Tom! 😊
Definitely different still gorgeous. A pleasure as always.😊
Thank you! 😊
TaDa! You've done it again Phil, neat piece. We definitely like that you saved the rim! A plant would look cool flowing over the bark. ❤
Thanks, Joanna! 😊
I'm so glad you kept the natural edge :)
😊
Such vision! An inspiration to all us weird wood turners. A succulent would do well in there!
Wow this is an attention getter glad you didn't cut the edges down very nice ❤ you are always amazing at what you turn. Thanks for sharing 😊
😊
He asks, "How would you turn this one?!"
Answer, "VERY CAREFULLY!" 😎
Edit after watching a master turner create a wonderment: Phil, you listened to what the wood was whispering and revealed the gorgeousness just waiting to be free! So well turned/not turned. Perfect!
Thank you, Dave! 😊
🎉
Thanks for undertaking this unusual so we don't have to. 😀 keep up the excellent work!
😊
My original assessment still stands. You are intrepid. I'm not sure I would have attempted this. But i do like these pieces that have a branch grown in. And I'm so glad you kept the edges. Well done Phil. Thank you.
Me too, Steve, nature creates some pretty cool stuff! 😊
Boy, they made you work for that one!!!!
😊
Glad you didn't turn anymore away!!! I like the natural beauty. In fact turning nothing inside. Just sanding and then the finish would be beautiful to me. Enjoyed listening to you talk your way through the turning. Maybe a 2" e-candle would look good. Have a great weekend. 🙂
Thank you, Mary! 😊
Wow! I'd call it "Conundrum" because that's what it presented to you. Beautiful, minimalist turning. I would just put a short to middle height, but wide candle in it.
Wow, thank you, Douglas! 😊
You made the right choice to me. I like the natural look. Thanks for sharing.😊
You’re welcome 😊
Phil. I’ve never seen or heard you being so confused in how to turn a project. I think if I’d been given the piece I would try and give it away. Have to give you tons of credit in trying to turn it. I think it is very nice and different. Thanks for sharing
Thank you much, Dave! 😊
Had the same type problem in the not to distant past. My solution was to borrow a hollow roller system by Carter tools from a friend. Worked so well I invested in one for myself with a laser guide to tell me where my cutter is. Love your channel! And yes the "I don't know award" is definitely earned by this one. Beautiful as always.
Thanks, Dutch! 😊
It's a one off for sure. Sometimes finishing a project with no visit to the hospital is the best you can hope for.
It's beautiful. Glad you listened to us all and left it as is.
I heard you all loud and clear, Phil! 😊
I can so see a small green plant in there. 🌿 looks Great.
😊
I really like that dark inside... not much turning, but it's still an amazing piece.. I like the medium size candle but I'm thinking a small plant, maybe a creeping vine or a mini tree looking plant..
great job Phil and thank you for the video... I never miss any of them... thank you so much my friend..
Thanks for watching, Juan! 😊
I am going to echo what lots have said and that is I like when you talk through your thought processes. That's how the rest of us learn from the master. :) I also wanted to say, you said "welcome to the Weird Channel" but I call it the "Phil working hard to let the wood be what it wants to be" which is much harder than forcing your vision on the piece. Thanks for an awesome video, see you next time.
I appreciate that, Harvey, thank you! 😀
I had to cover my eyes thinking that the sides were going to not the gouge! Awesome job but I was very nervous for you!
You and me both, Martin! 😊
Find a glass cylinder that fits tight in the hole and would allow one of the larger candles to sit inside. Maybe a colored glass cylinder, even. Oh well. that wood is a natural in our area. Great look Phil and a great job overall. Greg
Thanks, Greg! 😊
I'm really glad you kept those beautiful rounded edges where the tree tried to grow around an obstacle. They flow with the grain in the bottom and create a dramatic swoop. That was some great thinking on the foot of the piece! I like the natural looking candle in it but I think a plant with long draping stems, like an ivy, would look nice too.
You had some close calls with both the turning/sanding and the narrative! 😂 Nice saves in both cases!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts as you made your way through this project. Even though you didn't turn much wood away I think it was one of the most complex pieces I've seen you turn. Congratulations on keeping your focus tuned into this one!
Take care!
Thank you very much, Gwynn! 😊
You did a super job on that unique log. I what you did, Phil. 😊 Fill it with m&ms!
😊
Try a crystal ball in it, love this piece and the waves around the edges are beautiful.thank you phil ! ❤
😊
Weirdly beautiful, defiantly a plant Phil. Very unique👏👏👏👏👏🤣🙈🤪💕🇬🇧
Thank you, Maude! 😊
I'm so glad you left the sides! Taking them away would have totally ruined the piece. It looks great, awesome piece of wood!
A plant would be amazing it it. A spider plant would be perfect!
Thank you, Karen! 😊
Love that piece! Love that thought process you went through to reach that beautiful artwork! You are a true artisan!
Thank you! 😊
Looks great Phil. Definitely the right call to leave the top lips. Maybe a small cactus with a pot just the right size to fit in the recess.
Thanks, Matt! 😊
As it is so organic in nature definitely find a nice plant or flower to sit in it, you certainly made work for yourself but turned out a Phil special, good job again Phil.😁
I think a plant is the best choice too, Lewis. Unless I could find just the right statue or other piece of art. I'm going to spend some time figuring it out! 😊
I would probably put a terra cota planter with some flowers in there :D
Beautiful piece as always 😊
😊
I really like this piece good job Phil
😊
"I don't know what I'm going to do, but I'll do it until it's done." Truer words were never spoken! I just love this piece. Your instincts about it were spot-on. I think I would have tried to swoop up the ends and leave the middle untouched and maybe that would have worked too, but your results are gorgeous.
😊
Wow Phil this was a challenge. I jumped ever time you had it spinning and put your tool or sander into the center of the piece. I could see the edge catching and oh boy that would be a disaster. In the end you made a beautiful piece of art. I like your daughter would like this turning. Keep it in the family. It is one of the best pieces you have done. It is a great piece and you should be proud. Well done!
Thanks for the show.
Joel
Thank you very much, Joel! 😀
Sometimes we don't need to do anything or much of anything to appreciate the beauty of nature. Looks pretty cool to me, Phil.
😊
Phill, the biggest challenges often have the greatest rewards, in this case I would say you nailed it ,big time, Wonderful work as always .Enjoyed watching it ,make you make it turn it into a true beauty,
Thank you, Garrett! 😊
The piece turned out amazing. This one looked very challenging but turned out great and you did just enough to make that happen.
😊
Would be a good base for an air plant display or a multi-frame display for a family tree growing together.
Cool, thank you! 😊
I kept getting flashbacks to when that lopsided piece you did hit you in the hand.
Me too, Lance! 😊
You made something interesting out of a weird piece of wood
😊
I think you are right leaving the natural edge.
😊
Phil glad you left the edge looks soo much better thanks for another interesting video. TERRY
Thank you, Terry! 😊
I totally agree with leaving the natural edges where the branch crossed. But I think it would have looked great to round the cut off ends, but I do like the “foot” you created!
😊
A Challenge to say the least ! And yet you pulled it off ! A very interesting piece for sure . Only you could pull this off . Great job Phil . Hope you have a great weekend .
😊
Phil, what a wonderful piece 👍
Totally the right choice to leave the edges 👍
You just can't improve on nature!!
Add an orchid, that would look great.😉
Lots of orchid comments, Jon. I will look into that, thanks! 😊
So glad you didn’t turn out those gorgeous rounded edges! 2-1/2” candle. One of the short ones. It will make the piece make sense, but not obstruct the beauty of the form. Maybe cream colored, or brown. Unobtrusive. 👍🏼🥰😁
Thank you, Tara! 😊
Very entertaining! Chuckles. Love the result! Absolutely beautiful! A larger diameter electric candle would be perfect! You certainly don’t want a flame burning in it. Thanks for sharing! Please keep it up!
Thank you, I'll do my best! 😊
This one has a great deal of pucker factor . You did great. Leave Mother Nature alone. Beautiful . My lathe is short enough to take the tail stock off and and stand at the end of the bed rails.
Thanks, Steve! 😊
Man was I talking to you right out loud......until I saw the work in process. On the video, the small circular "window" for tool access was just slightly visable. I dont know if you could even see it or not. The end result is perfect! Figuring out the HOW to do what you desired was the HUGE challenge on this one for sure. The only possible thing I noticed was that maybe a tape or magic marker pair of lines ON THE TOOL REST itself may have given you a clearer insight into the ONLY window of access? Well done and very original design for sure. Love your work sir.
Thank you very much, Mike! 😊
That is one oddball piece from one oddball wood turner. Quite appropriate. Love the gnarly interior with the smooth outer lip. A nice contrast. Glad you went minimal.
Maybe a cut glass whiskey tumbler with a votive candle?
Thank you very much! 😊
Great job Phil, most people would have cut it up and lost all the texture.
😊
What a very unique piece! A little bit of moss and a succulent I think would look really cool plus look very natural.
😊
