How I Saved My "A"! - Wood Turning
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 січ 2021
- This Osage Orange piece arrived with an A on the bottom. It had been a log with a sign carved into it. Since my name is Anderson, I wanted to preserve the A while still turning a bowl out of it. I used double faced tape to hold it while the turning was completed. Worked out great! Finished in Feed & Wax.

As all of Your enjoyable videos, this one absolutely scores an "A",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Thanks David !
Glad you enjoyed it, David, thank you so much! 😊
Even tho its a year old, glad you saved your A--. Beautiful finished product.
You and me both! 😊
That's AWESOME Phil ! I'm glad the tape held up for you!!!
Happen wood turnings!
Thanks, Jon! 😃
Phil, you are one of the best wood turners I've seen and the truth is you are probably the best. You go for the natural look and don't have to have resin to pretty something up. I'm a copy cat and have learned so much from you about revealing what is natural in the wood. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate that, Jess, thank you! Most of all I appreciate that you are willing to try new things! 😊
Hey Phil, That is "A" cool bowl. It is unique and looked like it was a lot of fun to make. Yall have a wonderful day.
😂
Osage Orange Bowl on a Plank, Lol. U done Good Again.
There you go!
Beautiful grain on this piece. Great looking bowl
Thank you kindly 😊
That wood color is rather unique. The grain is lovely with a good contrast. As you held it, it reminded me of my father’s pipe tobacco and pipe rack set that he had in the mid 1960’s. It also points out, your little bowl on a board/tray, might really pop with a turned dark lid, some wood with a wide but contrasting grain.
Loved watching this project unfold. And some important “paying attention to the clearances between this and that so nothing inadvertently flies off, or it clipping you good-accidentally on purpose-yipe.” It is said it’s not a project until you bleed on it, but it’s best not to use a natural stain such as that on a project. Thanks again for “A” Bowl Project.
This one was a challenge but fun at the same time. I would do it again, hopefully still without the red stain! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop it stains sort of dark discoloration, does not take evenly to wood, and can be fickle to seal. Make dyes and stains from other things or get preparations of aniline dyes. Only thing is varnish used to be made of slaughterhouses blood was used to make varnish. Parents found an old.varnish can in the house they bought that said on the label, “Blood makes good paint” ( think it was Dutch Boy) from early 1950’s..
🙋♂️🏴 Amazing turning Phil it wasn't until you drilled out the center of the bowl did I realize what you where creating. I've never heard of wood that changes colour like that the grain pattern on the yellow side is great. A nice piece of art for Mr Anderson to treasure. 🇺🇲
Thank you very much, John!
That's a really nice "A"bowl Phil! Sorry I couldn't resist that, I'll show myself out now.
Hahaha
Another beautifully inspired piece. Osage Orange sure is a beautiful wood makes really pleasant to shoot longbows too.
Thank you, DW! I'll bet it does, I've heard that before.
Love your chucking method, also the use of the Phil-o-flex.Fab piece .
Thanks so much, Michael! 😊

Glad you like it, Stephen, thank you! 😊
Well you and that piece of wood are just a " suppose to be " thing . I have some Osage orange here that I haven't tried. Guess I will have to now . What a wonderful memory you have made . And another wonderful bowl .
Thank you, Jeff! It's a good wood to turn, have fun with yours! 😄
Also, thanks for sharing all the beauty artwork.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching! 😊
Really pretty wood. I like the shaping you did on the inside. That is always the scariest part for me.
You and me both, Jason! Undercutting looks great but hard to create, at least for me.
Well Phil, you are going to hav to change your name to Mr. A!
Love the bowl.
Glad you love it, Kid, thanks! 😊
Phil you sure made an “A” out of that piece of wood!🤣😂😂👍🇺🇸
Haha, I did! Thank you, Cortland! 😊
Beautiful wood grain figures.
Yes they are, Khan!
I think it’s an awesome piece. Sort of reminds me of my great grandfather outside toilet.
LOL!
some good tips, thank you Phil! Love the sandpaper/dowel idea. Thanks for sharing.
You are very welcome, Matt, thank you for watching! 😊
Really like that one it's crazy that you can turn firewood to treasure so well. I turn on occasion but like your try anything style.
No such thing as firewood if you have a wood lathe, Joseph! LOL! Thank you!
Fascinating piece of timber Phil nice turning. Graham UK
😊
Very nice piece and a great way to save your A...

Love your turning and your vision of what something can be...! Good stuff Phil...
Thank you so much for these videos and I know this is an old video but it's so good to see your back and at it...!!!
Very welcome, thanks for watching, Mark! 😃
I like it a lot Phil. Sure, it's a simple bowl but there's a story behind it - literally! Grest that you kept yhs "A" for your initial - mine too! If I ever find a chunk of wood with a big A on it I'll take a leaf out of your book and try to find a way of making something good-looking out of it.
Sounds great, Stevan! 😊
That turned out very beautiful Phil love it
Thank you, Mike!
Each of your work is work of art is very individual and amazing! Everything is done with imagination and love with the utmost respect for the material. Thanks for the pleasure of seeing the creative process!
Thank you so much! 😊 I'm glad you can appreciate the nature in my turnings.
Hello Phil you made a nice bowl of Osage Orange.
That is a type of wood I have never heard of, but it looked like it is quite hard.
Stay safe and keep turning
Thank you very much, HB! 😊
Enjoy your videos. Thank you for making these
Glad you like them, Tom, thank you for watching! 😊
We just had to cut down an osage orange tree due to being damaged by Hurricane Laura.😔 I absolutely LOVE the colors of it!!!
Yes, I love the yellow, too!
So creative ☺
Unique, with fantastic grain
Enjoyable video, thank you for sharing 😉

Hi Phil... really lovely job on the bowl, plate, hollow form, platter, thingy... Haha... I'm glad that you didn't catch your digits in that spinning death trap... great video... take care...All the best.....Andy
Watching it back, it does look a little scary, but I survived so there's that! LOL! Thank you so much for taking your time to watch and comment on my videos, much appreciated, Andy!
Well, We never hear of that wood in Australia as far as I know but what a brilliant wood it turned out to be. The grain is outstanding & the colour is so unusual, in my eyes at least. The decision to keep the "A" was brilliant & what a job that tape did!! Again we have the opportunity to see & hear a Master Craftsman at work on an outstanding piece. I 'take my hat off' to you in both your wonderful skills & your brilliant vision. Congratulations Phil on another brilliant piece. May you continue to have the success you richly deserve during a productive 2021. Don from South Aust.
Thank you so much, Don! I'm finding out there are sooo many different kinds and varieties of wood. Seems unlimited. I only wish our time could be, too! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Interesting thought. If our time could be unlimited, I wonder what we would be like & what we would do with that time??? Don
@@donaldadams5342 I think it would depend on our individual personalities, Don. If you're a procrastinator like me, you'd figure you always will have time so why do it now! LOL!
Hey Phil,
If it was not chosen on purpose, it was an awesome coincidence 😃😃
Beatiful bowl, love it!!
Stay safe!
/Lars
Yes it was, maybe even better, Lars! 😊
Great piece Phil! I learn so much every Thursday from a very gifted but humble master Woodturner.
Glad you enjoy my videos, Russ, thank you for watching! 😊
A+ job on that Phil. I would have just cut the A off but I like how you kept it as one piece.
Thank you, Dustin! With a name like Anderson, I had to keep it! 😊
Thanks Phil "A " for Anthony, but you know my friends call me Tony. My mother only use to call my Anthony when I was a bad boy, when she did it could freeze my blood. Especially when given "the look " as well.
I wasn't sure at first were you were going with this piece, Must learn to be more trusting in your artistic judgement. A beautiful and unique piece. God Bless , stay safe. Mark Anthony AKA Tony.
Oh, yeah, I know the look and the full first name only mothers can pull off. LOL! I'm glad you like this, it was a bit of a challenge with the shape I chose but it worked out. Thank you, Tony!
You're a visionary. I couldn't see where you were going, or what the possibilities were until your bowl gouge revealed the truth. Thank you, again!
Just comes with practice, I guess, Perry. I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😊
Gorgeous. Beautiful piece.
Thank you, Joalla! 😊
When I lived in Missouri, the fence posts between our 40 and our neighbors' 40 was supported by split osage orange posts, which were many, many years old. Osage orange never rotted according to my octogenarian neighbors...
Interesting info, Arthur, thank you! 😊
Very Cool Phil, I Really Like It Bud!
I'm glad, Steve, thank you!
That grain is beautiful
😊
Very nice. I love the colors in Osage. I like to finish with CA glue them buff. Makes colors really pop. Turn the piece in sun light and colors change from bright yellow to red brown.
Love your work. Your imagination is amazing, and you make beautiful pieces out of some pretty unusual wood.
Thank you very much, Jim!
I turned a bowl from osage orange about 30 years ago and it still has most of it's color. As I recall it turned nicely but it's a very hard wood and it's hard on tools. Your piece is very nice and a bit unusual die to the letter "A" on the back. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2021 and stay healthy.
Thank you, Glen! You stay happy and healthy, too!
Nicely done Phil.
Thank you! 😊
Interesting piece and I love the grain, Phil.
😄
Beautiful wood and cool looking bowl!
Glad you like it, Christine, thank you! 😊
Love it Phill, it is absolutely you bud..nice work.
Thank you, Todd!
What a fun piece you just turned I don't blame you for keeping it I mean it does have your initial👍👍
How lucky can a guy get? Thank you, Charles!
A+ phil , its beautiful.
Thank you, Sue! 😊
Very well done. It's a tough wood but turns nice. Great imagination. I really enjoy the artistic approach.
Thank you very much, Matt!
Very nice osage bowl.

Very cool .. thanks Phil A.

Hi Phil
I’m on the Coromandel peninsula north island New Zealand Love your videos,
Each one helps extend my turning knowledge, after 30 years of turning there’s allways more to learn.
Happy new year to you turn till you drop is my motto

Thank you, Joe!
Nice job Phil.
Thank you, George! 😊
A+ piece!
Leave it to you, gramps! 😊
Beautifulwork and nice grains color
Thank you so much, Gaetan!
Love the look. If you use a finish with UV blockers the color change much slower. It will change unless you keep it in the dark.
Thank you, Gene! Here at Shady Acres, there is very little light, especially in the house so I think it will be OK but I'll mention it if I see a change over time.
Very cool piece 😎
Thank you, H S!
OMG, Phil, you took a lump of coal and made a diamond!!!!
OH, I wish I could, Marilyn! Thank you! 😊
Very cool Phil!
Thank you, Gil! 😊
Very nice Phil!
Thank you, John!
That's a really cool piece phil
Glad you like it, thanks!
A base bowl? Love it 😄
😊
Very nice 👍
I appreciate that, thank you! 😊
Very nice piece. The name Osage is named after the Osage Native American tribe. I think its also called Bois D'arc. Its very resistant to rot and was favored by settlers for making fence posts.
Cool, thanks, Texana, your information is correct! 😊
Hi phill great work lovely markings on it hope ya well kirk 👍
Thank you, Kirk! I'm doing just fine, hope you are, too! 😊
Fun piece Phil. Sort of an emerging bowl.?? Either way you did a great job. Thanks, V
Thank you, Mike, glad you enjoyed it!
it is a lovely unique piece. thank you for sharing
Many thanks, Joyce! 😊
Love the pretty yellow grain, it would turn boring brown in the blink of an eye here where I live in Trinidad and Tobago... hope it keeps its yellow colour there in your Shady Acres home... great video and indeed as many have already stated you get an "A+" for this one... thanks for sharing
Thank you, Ruthlyn! Yeah, not much chance of changing colors here. 😊
Amazing as always :)
Thank you!
Osage orange is local slang,I'm in Oklahoma, they are called Bois D'Arc, a beautiful yellow wood when finished.
Thanks for the info, Shazoul!
Nice one Phil
Thank you, Ian!
Osage Orange: Boiis d'arc, Horse apple. Hard straight grained wood. limbs used by native Americans to form arrow shafts. Has viscous thorns along the stems. I have yet to understand why most every farm I was involved with in Texas had at least two of these trees on thier property. Because of their tight grain the wood was used as foundation supports/piers for homes. A lot of history on the wood/tree, i need to find more references to satisfy my fascination with the tree.
Thanks for the interesting info, Bill!
Always wanted to get ahold of some of that wood.
