Hi Patrick, You stated in a previous video that approximately $350 billion EU assets reside inside Russia and in this video $400 billion of Russian Central Bank reserves are frozen. The Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev (also former Russian President) is quoted as saying the following: MOSCOW, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Russia will respond to the seizure of money of Russian citizens and companies abroad by seizing funds of foreigners and foreign companies in Russia, RIA news agency quoted Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the security council, as saying on Saturday. Moscow does not rule out nationalising the assets of companies registered in the United States, European Union and other "unfriendly jurisdictions", Medvedev was quoted as saying. Does this mean that the frozen $400 billion in central bank reserve can be offset by nationalising foreign assets?

You neglected to mention whether or not the fertilizer shortfall can be made up for by other producers elsewhere around the globe. Natural gas is difficult to move around, but ammonium nitrate is much less so.
I’m from North Dakota, and it’s disheartening to me that this war will cause so much profit for our state, as we are among the US’s largest suppliers of grain, sugar beets, sunflowers, potatoes, oil, and some natural gas and coal. Feels like we’re going to profit off of people’s deaths.
Don't look at it that way. Instead, consider: When the world has a shortage of all these resources, your state is stepping up to fill the gap, or at least try to.
You won't profit off of deaths, you'll profit off of a shift towards an economic system that values ethics. The whole world is happy you are here to fill in the gaps.
As a russian citizen, it's sometimes amazing for me to see, that Russia is so reach, but real citizens never see a bit of all this treasure even through huge government spending

Really good video, as usual! This war is sadly revealing a tragic reality to most people: we depend on Russia's commodities too much, unfortunately. We can see this in the hesitance of some countries to impose tougher sanctions and I doubt a war is going to change that. By the way, I recommend The Daily Upside. It's informative and pretty relaxing, perfect for a quick morning read while drinking your coffee
@@alexlaw1892 Yes, that's pretty clear. Global trade in itself is not a bad thing, it's economically efficient and a pretty smart thing to do for humanity overall. It's more about our greed that makes things bad
Nuclear energy is not perfect but good enough to get rid of that energy dependence I think 🤔 as for sun or wind... kinda unreliable to be honest but they can bear some energy chunks varied among countries.
If Canada commits to it, they do have many untapped resources which they could use at their disposal to userp Russia in resource export capabilities. They are not tapping into all these resources as of now however
Why would Russia still leave a huge chunk of their foreign reserves in Western banks? Shouldn't they have moved them all home, before they started the war?
Yup..they must have gone batshit crazy if indeed ,they left their foreign reserves outside of Russia before they launched their invasion. A lot of what we are hearing from western media IMHO,is closing the doors after the horse has escaped. The Russians will have prepared for this action if I'm correct about the ability to think ahead
Based on the European Union's clean energy goals, it's strange that Germany is the second largest consumer of coal within the EU. Moreover, they are very active in strip mining lignite (brown coal). That is the lowest grade of coal and the most harmful to life.
That's because these goals would require huge investments in clean energy and that doesn't win you elections. Also germans don't like ugly pinwheels in their neighborhood, nor changing their very comfortable status quo.
@@lorijohnson2817, That begs the question as to why Germany and the EU created such ambitious policies to eradicate nuclear, coal and gas-fired power plants before they would ever be ready to implement green energy. It's not realistic. As with most people, I don't like those ugly pinwheels. Plus, the pinwheels and solar panels have their own set of pollution problems when discarded after their useful lifespan.
@@SteveTheFazeman It is possible, but you need to want it. Fossil fuel companies still have huge lobby impact in Brussels. Germany started to invest big in solar energy but eventually cut down on it which slowed the growing of the industry
@@lorijohnson2817, Aside from the lobbyists and Paris Agreement, there is currently no silver bullet that will make green energy economically feasible. The green industry has to make a return on their investment. Unless green technology makes a sweeping impact on our daily lives, that industry will continue to play second fiddle to non-renewable sources of energy. The only practical and scalable green technology I have seen is from the The Ocean Cleanup nonprofit based in The Netherlands. Unlike Greta Thunberg who just schemes at adults, Boyan Slat is quietly going about the enormous task of cleaning up the legacy plastic from the Pacific Patch and some rivers. In fact, the plastic they gather is used for recycling. I really admire his efforts and hope he makes a lot of money from his venture.
@@SteveTheFazeman Interesting. I really have no broader knowledge on the topics of energy. Maybe that is why their [clean energy] arguments weight so light in comparism to big oil and the coal industry. But I don't see how a NONPROFIT can be a solution to that either. As you said, there needs to be a RIO.
Countries never should have been dependant on Russia gas and oil. It was a big mistake to turn from domestic nuclear to cheap Russian gas, now Europe is paying the price for their greed.
Europe was bamboozled by the green movement. First you deploy a comprehensive and robust renewable energy source system, THEN you shut down nuclear power plants. Not the other way around wtf :)
you have compleatly left out adblue which is required for diesel trucks. Australia had a shortage of adblue due to urea which is required to make adblue.
Europe's dependency on volatile states has been issue for decades. And amplified by PPE etc during covid and now with energy. EU especially needs to get more self sufficient in key areas.
People like you really dont understand the geopolitics and what drives it, energy is the main issue globally and giant oil fields companies around the world will never let any other source energy to replace them, and speaking about wind turbine, solar panels and sea waves are a big joke, the only source that has he potential to replace energy worldwide is nuclear energy which global government will never adopt it because those giant war monger corporations wont let it happen
@@nerolowell2320 Germany knew 2 decades ago that this energy issue would happen and didn't do much to much about it. The west too to save money now created depencies on these states instead of playing a long game. The depencies on oil and gas won't last for ever anyway and there is no urgent desire to start addressing it now only keep doing the same.

The Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev (also former Russian President) is quoted as saying the following:
MOSCOW, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Russia will respond to the seizure of money of Russian citizens and companies abroad by seizing funds of foreigners and foreign companies in Russia, RIA news agency quoted Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the security council, as saying on Saturday.
Moscow does not rule out nationalising the assets of companies registered in the United States, European Union and other "unfriendly jurisdictions", Medvedev was quoted as saying.
Does this mean that the frozen $400 billion in central bank reserve can be offset by nationalising foreign assets?

You're the best financial youtuber out there
Nice! What a way to wake up, thanks Patrick!
As a finance/economics major I appreciate your commentary so much. Much love and peace to Europe from the US.
Opening my eyes, thanks.
I've never seen anyone breakdown a countries economy like this before. Thank you! Excellent!
This is a public service. I learned so much.
Thank you so much for this video! I was tasked on writing an assignment on this very topic and this made it very easy to understand.
all this could mean that bettng on batterycars was a bad move and lights go out thanks to renewables not providing enough power. hopefully that wakes some ppl up who refused to listen for the past 5 years.
Love the way you do analysis with data.
Finally a comprehensive video talking extensively about the economic effects of this invasion on Russia (and Ukraine too), and not its impact on the US stock market. I'm not saying that the former sort of video is useless, but let's not kid ourselves that the impact will be the biggest on US stock. I want to know what it means to Russia and Ukraine. Thank you for the video!
"Invasion on Russia"
Wut.
Russia is not being invaded but Ukraine. Russia is the one invading Ukraine.
@@joshuakevinserdan9331 "the economic effects of this invasion, on Russia"
I had to read it a few times. The invasion effects will be on Russia (and Ukraine too).
Mr. Boyle, either you were developing a trade idea or on a bender the night before this recording. Impressive.

Always love your content. Thanks for your input. Love it !
You neglected to mention whether or not the fertilizer shortfall can be made up for by other producers elsewhere around the globe. Natural gas is difficult to move around, but ammonium nitrate is much less so.
There was already shortage of fertilizers because of energy crises in Europe
Food crises or hunter pandemic
I think Saudi Arabia can make up the shortfall
It's more about potash fertilizers
Thanks for the precious pieces of information

Maybe a large part of government spending ends up in officials' pockets.....
@tripplefives I mean depends what the goverment is spending the money on though. If it genuinley benefits the people (no Mr Putin a massive army doesn't count) then it's a good thing... within limits. Don't want an economic crash after all
Small government that runs on the consent of the people . Americas founders had it right.
@tripplefives Except some of the things the goverment builds are incredibly useful and could not have been built by the people individually.
Everything according to Marx.

In 2021 the USA's No 1 source of imported Gasoline and other petro fuels was Russia (21%) before No 2 Canada (17%) and Russia was No 3 as the source of oil imports before Saudi Arabia No 4....
Well if you have sanctioned Iran and Venezuela... you have to buy from someone...

Hey man, recent sub but you've gained a fan with your coverage here.
That's your only take away? It isn't that we depend too much on Russia, it's that we depend to much on global trade. That is the real devil.
@@alexlaw1892 Yes, that's pretty clear. Global trade in itself is not a bad thing, it's economically efficient and a pretty smart thing to do for humanity overall. It's more about our greed that makes things bad
Yeah but Russia increased the gas bill on Europe so if you think about it Europe is paying for the war
Nuclear energy is not perfect but good enough to get rid of that energy dependence I think 🤔 as for sun or wind... kinda unreliable to be honest but they can bear some energy chunks varied among countries.
wait until war with china occurs (hope not) - then let's talk dependencies
Spectacular information flowing and feeding in this video. Thank you Mr Boyle. More like this, plz.

If Canada commits to it, they do have many untapped resources which they could use at their disposal to userp Russia in resource export capabilities. They are not tapping into all these resources as of now however
Yeah good luck convincing Trudeau of any thing that makes sense
Canada doesn't have the ability to do that. They don't have the labour for it
@@frenchonion4595 don't be deluded, you don't have the labour for such activities.
Excellent. You have a gift for this. Congratulations for the hard work. 🌹
Great content without any useless interruptions. Looks like we can expect prices of gas and electricity to go up even more.
Patty.. keep crushing tha game! These are always great..
I was wondering this too! Putin must not have anticipated the west punishing him for invading a western ally. In other words, he is a giant fool.
Super! Is there any etf that includes all these metals?
Based on the European Union's clean energy goals, it's strange that Germany is the second largest consumer of coal within the EU. Moreover, they are very active in strip mining lignite (brown coal). That is the lowest grade of coal and the most harmful to life.
That's because these goals would require huge investments in clean energy and that doesn't win you elections. Also germans don't like ugly pinwheels in their neighborhood, nor changing their very comfortable status quo.
@@lorijohnson2817,
That begs the question as to why Germany and the EU created such ambitious policies to eradicate nuclear, coal and gas-fired power plants before they would ever be ready to implement green energy.
@@lorijohnson2817,
Aside from the lobbyists and Paris Agreement, there is currently no silver bullet that will make green energy economically feasible.
Best reporting on the Ukraine and impact.
Countries never should have been dependant on Russia gas and oil.
It was a big mistake to turn from domestic nuclear to cheap Russian gas, now Europe is paying the price for their greed.
The previous American president said that to the previous German chancellor. This good advice was ignored for the short term cost savings.
It was not greed, it was anti-nucleair ideology
Europe was bamboozled by the green movement. First you deploy a comprehensive and robust renewable energy source system, THEN you shut down nuclear power plants. Not the other way around wtf :)
In the modern world countries will always depend on others for something ,,maybe its time to come up with better diplomatic relations.
you have compleatly left out adblue which is required for diesel trucks.
@@nerolowell2320 well said. Some people buy the narrative without questioning, just like they're programmed to.
