  • This video shows how you can harvest Timber in either a rural or urban environment with affordable equipment. It's not required that you use big expensive machinery to harvest trees/logs after felling. I show in the video how with a little effort you can do the same thing with a few tools that are affordable for the common man. In this video I use the Log Rite ATV ARCH, Portable Winch and my Honda ATV to harvest four nice Cherry logs from a recent tree felling harvest at an urban location.

    As a former lineman, the means to set power poles in non truck accessible locations (back yards) the common method was the use of such a device called a capstan hoist. The capstan hoist would be chained to the bottom of the old pole, then using 4 pully blocks, a gin arm is attached to the top of the old pole. To make a long process short, the capstan hoist and blocks can be used to lift tremendously large poles. From what I saw, you have a great setup, and with a little ingenuity and practice, I believe you will develop jigs on your trailer to make loading the logs easier and faster. Quite an enjoyable video. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and experiences with everyone.

    Nice system! I would suggest that after running the winch, let it idle while you unhook the log in order to cool it down before shutting it off. Same goes for chainsaws when milling with them or running them in big cuts.

    Thanks for the info on this portable winch, one way to prevent a rope or cable from coming back and taking your head off if it slips off the tree is to place an old jacket or blanket across the winch line a few feet from where it’s connected to the log, it forces the line to go down and not come straight back at you. Great video.

    Hey Just an Ideal for the Log Sticking on the back of the trailer. What about welding a 2&1/4 inch pipe across the length of the back of the trailer for the log to slide across and then add another ramp catcher along the very back lower than the pipe. THis would give you a slider pipe for logs~ and any lawnmower , wheeler, ect would have no problem driving over 2&1/4 inch pipe. Appreciate your videos and info, you take the time to share with us. Salute

    I looked at these a few years ago, cost about £1000 in the UK. Not really for me as I live in the wood (on a steep slope), so was loaned a really old tractor and wood winch . Lots of redirects, but gets there in the end. Wish a quad bike would handle the grade on my track, but 4x4 with an arch might. Nice video.

    Hi, nice video. I do pretty much the same thing when loading my trailer. I have the same portable winch (dandy little machines!) and when I'm loading a log, I take the loose end of the rope and go stand by the log. If the the hangs up on the back of the trailer, just a little nudge sideways while still pulling on the rope with get it over those edges. Keep up the good work!

    Like the video. On your portable winch, that drum that you wrap the rope around is called a " cathead ". This idea i believe came in the oil industry many years ago. They needed some way to move that heavy drill pipe. The cathead would run off the drawworks, up in the dirreck would be a large snatch block on a gin pole. You could move almost anything that a 2" or 3" rope could hold.

      Bruce
      I believe that come along way before the oilfield industry, in the sailing industry, called a windlass !

    • @bruce1816
      @bruce1816 6 років тому +1

      Ken Gamble windlass /ˈwɪndləs/ is an apparatus for moving heavy weights. Typically, a windlass consists of a horizontal cylinder (barrel), which is rotated by the turn of a crank or belt. A winch is affixed to one or both ends, and a cable or rope is wound around the winch, pulling a weight attached to the opposite end. The oldest depiction of a windlass for raising water can be found in the Book of Agriculture published in 1313 by the Chinese official Wang Zhen of the Yuan Dynasty (fl. 1290-1333).[1] Archimedes was the inventor of windlass.[2]

    Enjoyed the video Nathan. That winch is pretty slick. I like how portable it is. About the lip on the ramp, have you considered an arch. • @kevincameron8437
    @kevincameron8437 6 років тому +4

    One possible solution for your trailer is to put a portable roller bar on the tail end for the logs to roll over. Wouldn't have to be large diameter, just an inch or two, with a cable through it, some eye hooks on the trailers..hook/unhook each time. That way you can still load/unload your ATV or other equipment. Good set up though and I like the tension winch...And love the way you are always looking to become more efficient and sharing it with us.

  • @nateraff8708
    @nateraff8708 6 років тому +1

    Nice setup, I just back the arch up to the front of the trailer and pull logs up my ramps with the hand winch on the arch. If I had a portable winch that would definitely save a lot of time. Also, on larger logs, if you double your pull line thru a pulley at the log end, back up to attach to your trailer near the winch, you will double the pulling power of your winch, or just make the pull easier and save wear and tear on the winch. But be careful, you can easily exceed the weight ratings of your rigging equipment, you need everything rated 5000 lbs or more. A couple pulleys rigged into your system can quadruple the pulling power of your winch, but it does slow down the pulling speed.

    I've got a 12K harbor freight winche, I've pulled up 1/2t trucks up from a steep driveway with two flat tires onto a trailer. You just gotta keep the batterie charged or hardwire it into your vehicle. That portable winch is cool but I'm sure it is a lot more than the $399 I paid for but at least you don't need a Battery. Mathew Cremona has a pretty good setup to load 50-60" logs onto his trailer.

    Need a quick release mounting plate for your trailer and maybe your truck bed, to extend your versatility with the winch. I've got a "Badlands" 12,000lb winch from harbor freight mounted it the back of my truck on a 5th wheel hitch so I rotate in any direction and in my streaker's I've set up multiple roller fairings. I use a lift and trolley system on my trailer to load it with log's up to 33 feet long by my self.

    Suggestion, keep a piece of sacrifice treated 1/2 or 3/4 plywood on the trailer, lay it down over both the lips and drop the log on top of the plywood, it will keep ya from catching. Love your work.

    On your fetching arch, have you thought about putting an adjustable saddle below the keel. Then when you lift, just forward of the balance point, the front of the log will rise until it snugs into the saddle resulting in the aft end of the log coming off the ground. If you don't pick too far forward of the balance, your tongue weight should be practically unaffected.
    Just a thought,

    How sweet is that my friend, I love it. That is a really cool project, I love the fact it is not draining you battery on your truck like an electric winch would. Thanks for sharing my friend. I think if we are not careful, I am gong to get grounded from your channel hehehe.
    Thanks again my friend and keep up the great work and bringing us great reviews etc.

      I was thinking that exact same thing, I drained my JUMPER box twice the last three times I used my winch and was so thankful I had a spare 950 CCA Interstate battery in the back of the truck, I used it up too, my big 12,000 lb winch just kills these batteries

    A different application of an old technology, Windlasses have been used to load and unload cargo and move rigging and other fittings aboard naval an merchant ships for more the century.
    They were also used to move large caliber naval gun projectiles from the deck surround the gun turret on to the ring deck of the gun turret.

    the cone can eliminate that catching problem on logs that it fits and there's is a trick to secure that cone better to the log

    Maybe invest in some rollers for the back of your trailer. As long as that would be all you use that trailer for would be hauling logs or something to lock the rollers when not using them

    That is some good looking cherry but not sure how you keep from being eaten up with poison ivy. As for the portable winch it is the cats meow. I don't saw mill but would like to have one to play with.

    portable winch is halfway there. put a VEE in the front to capture the log and then when the log lifts, you can strap it. lift the log entirely so it does not drag.

    This is a good video. I've watched these kinda videos for years ,but just ran across your channel. Yes I subscribed👍👍👍👍👍
    Is there a reason that you don't simply back the first few logs up the ramps before they get wider on the trailer than the wheel arch? Or is it because this vid is about the winch and not the arch?
    I clicked on the winch companies website and didn't see any information on what kinda rope to use. Is there a better and suckish ropes to use. I ask because we have a massive ex military winch with a capstan pulley on it. There have been many of times a rope would have made life much easier than a hook that weighs 20lbs and huge cable.
    This makes much more sense than the electric winch ive been using to snake logs outa the woods with. Even with the truck running it'll drain the battery in no time. This little single cylinder would only sip compared to a bigblock V-8 running just to charge the battery.

      @OutoftheWoods0623  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Phil,
      yes the video was showing the winch so that is why I used it that way,
      if you contact them about your needs I am sure they will know the correct rope to use, I love the ropes over the cables and a lot safer,
      Thanks for watching, I appreciate your time,

    That is like magic... it is like having the incredible hulk working for you.....who would think a little gas powered winch could pull big logs that easy!!!!!!!!!!!Great Idea save your back and body plus no worries about worker comp. as you have provided useful machines to do the work so your rates should be lower... Your mantra should be: BE CAREFUL!!WORK SMART NOT HARD!!!!!!!!!

    A sheet of junk plywood might be a quicker solution to ramp those bumps on the trailer. A smaller chain around here called Menards sells sheet goods that are damaged at a discount. A corner or two are dinged or chewed up. No big deal in a ramp application like this.

      I'm disabled but for some reason I have a huge urge/need to play lumberjack. lol I'll be ordering a mill soon and will be all small scale urban sourced logs. I'll focus on slabs rather than lumber though. Your videos have really helped me see ways to make it happen even with my physical limits!

    • @OutoftheWoods0623
      @OutoftheWoods0623  6 років тому

      that is great news, what mill are you looking at? I rarely saw anything but slabs now a days, seems it is all that people want and I cant keep them in stock,

    • @wauhawk
      @wauhawk 6 років тому

      I'm looking at the HFE-36 from Hud-son. It can do 36" diameter and I want that for end grain slabs. I'd get a woodmizer but that requires a decimal point move to the right! I'm ashamed to say but for an Eagle Scout I am not good with plant/tree identifying so I'll likely sell my slabs a bit cheap. My first goal is physical/mental therapy and wood for my own misguided projects. The mill will put me able to go from tree to finished product. Also for a small kiln I was thinking of using an old walkin in cooler/freezer. But I'm really no where near a kiln so who knows yet.
      I also have a splitter and decent enough chipper to make a couple bucks on that side also. I just do things slower and can't do rough ground after tearing both quads 2.5 years ago.

    have you checked out Matthew Cremona's videos he made an arch that hinge's at the back of the trailer for loading log's .

    Try throwing some old car oil on your trailers boards to make the logs slide on and off easier

    Hi timber tramp..Great video for a cheap way to move logs without getting them all rocked up or muddy..Ok im a wounded logger and have an identical trailer 16' with dove tail..So to maybe get around all that hanging up stuff ,is put up an arch like a cherry picker style boom.Right at the front maybe only take 4-6 ft with a roller tip..Then u have to get all your rigging behind it.High lift loggin man.. :)
